Owner description: Damaged during the earthquake

The Castellina, dominating one side of the Piazza di San Benedetto in Norcia, is an imposing and formidable looking building. Not surprisingly, we discovered when we visited the Museo della Castellina that even though the building was built as a residence for the Papal governors in the 14th century, it later became a gaol with a brutal history of torture. The original architectural design called for an extra storey which was rather fortuitously never built helping it to withstand many earthquakes, three of which (1763,1859 and 1979) were devastating.

Once you pass through the plain and daunting outside walls, the inner courtyard is really quite attractive. We found ancient graffiti on the thick wooden shutters, some of which dated back to the 1600's and obviously carved by either interred prisoners or garrisoned soldiers. From the original days of the Papal governors there remains some lovely vibrant frescoes in what was the chapel on the upper floor. There were a surprising number of quality artefacts from Roman times along with the history of Roman occupation in the area and some lovely artworks from the medieval period. We were told by a lady on duty at the museum that the bulk of the exhibits had been very generously donated by one man (a doctor?) to the city of Norcia for the benefit of all.

The Museo della Castellina is well worth a visit and quite apart from the interesting exhibits, don't miss the spectacular views of Norcia's Piazza di San Benedetto surrounded by the wild Sibillian Mountains from the upper windows!

A very interesting place to visit. We liked going around the building more than the exhibits

We visited the the Castellina on a cloudy day, when it was not so pleasant to be outdoors. The museum is hosting a very nice and interesting exhibition on the local excavations and some really nice pieces of art from the late middle ages and renaissance. We even got a personal guided tour in English by Djurdja, a lady from the staff of the museum. It was one of the best museum-experiences we have had in the recent years!
