Description: The Osteria ACQUACHETA, open for over 25 years, has retained the characteristics of the old Tuscan taverns. The kitchen, sharing tables, one glass for water and wine, and not least an authentic welcome and true, typically Tuscan, make it a local flavor ... you feel at home ... Managers, CHIARA and GIULIO, have maintained intact over the years the tradition of pasta, bread, cakes and homemade preserves to which are added succulent steaks cooked Florentine embers of wood. Local, small and very popular, is located in the upper part of the old town, a few steps from the main square.

“Best Steak in Europe!”
Reviewed August 10, 2013

We were traveling to meet friends in Tuscany area of Italy when we finally arrived in Montepulciano at this restaurant at about 10pm and surprisingly enough there was barely a place to sit. This seemed to be a very good message to us in terms of the food quality we would expect. The waitress was very kind and found us (we are a couple with a 11 year old daughter) a place to sit among other happy eaters along a long wooden table. The experience seemed cozy and homey, especially since we had been on the road for about 6 hours and quite hungry. After the waiter, a kind Italian young lady patiently explained the menu in English and took our order which included our interest in the famous Florentine steaks. she mentioned that the owner would bring our choice of steaks raw for us to evaluate! The owner, a very hospitable, down to earth, kind and hard working Italian man presented us with a 1350gram and a 1750 gram steak that we could choose from! My wife's mouth dropped in awe as she tried to explain that these are two big for even the three of us, at which point the kind owner gave me a look which basically said ...... Are You A Man or what! This would need exceptional diplomatic skills so to appease my wife's fear of overindulgence and the Italian man looking across the table with that LOOK! I gently calmed my wife and asked humbly for the 1350gram, at which point he smiled as if saying "I knew you had it in you!", whisking away the steaks and gently placed one of them straight into a wood oven type of grill.
We had also ordered some starters (tomato with garlic on a piece of bread and cheese melted with pear). The toasted bread was not so special, the melted sheep cheese with pear was an interesting blend of salty and sweet!
However, when the steak arrived it was a real magic moment! It had been carefully cut into strips for us, so that we could easily take small 100-150 gram pieces individually. My wife, who is Brazilian and is used to the best quality meats offered in South America took the first bite and at that moment she looked at me with a sense of renewed love and admiration which hinted that she had made a good decision when she tied the knot 19 years ago! Our restaurant neighbors who had not ordered the steak(probably due to the sizes offered) looked with mouth watering delight to the steak placed in front of us. My wife no longer complained of its size and our exhausted daughter who had been complaining about the long drive, was silent, too busy gobbling down this delicious specimen of "Bistecca alla fiorentina"! I would imagine that we received 1000g of lean meat because their was some fat and bones, however that was a perfect welcome to Tuscany after a long drive!
The meat is medium to almost raw in the middle, but soft in texture and delicious in flavor only seasoned with large pieces of sea salt. I can honestly say The best Europe has got to offer after we've tasted Argentinian steak in falls de iguazu, Argentina!
The rest I leave for you to experience, if you are truly the person who enjoys beautiful and picturesque hills of Tuscany and is not timid in the face of "Bistecca alla fiorentina"!

“Great Food & Ambiance”
Reviewed August 4, 2013

Great pasta (the gnocci literally melts in your mouth!) and steaks. Make sure you know how much meat (by the gm or kilo) you are ordering. Has a warm and communal atmosphere with very friendly staff.

“Excellent food”
Reviewed August 3, 2013

We found this place in th Rough Guide and it was a definite hit: the food was among the best I've eaten in Italy, and the prices are incredibly low. Also great atmosphere. Only the wine was a bit mediocre.

“CHARACTER : A distinguishing feature [....] marking a person or a group.”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

Sometimes those terrible tourists get to know about the good places that the locals love, too.

This is not Disneyland - but it is popular (deservedly) and I love it !

These guys do something that no one else in the zone do. Yes they give you great food, but it's served with a good dose of Tuscan pride, a little theatre and reverence for the informal. The pomp meter is set at zero... Brilliant. We have amazing produce in Tuscany so to get the food right should be simple enough. But Atmosphere ? that 's not so easy. A places having character is part of atmosphere where we are talking about eating out. Having a definite character takes courage - and it can indicate that integrity is at play. Not every one will like you - you will not be bland.

Staff are super but the boss is a very unusual and interesting chap and is very skilled at what he does. Steak is REALLY good - but so the veg side plates (contorni) which are very studied, giving the impression of being revived from once - upon -a - time recipes and sometimes featuring vegetables that you rarely see on menus (for example 'Gobbi' - I've only ever eaten them here, due perhaps to the high ingredient cost and laborious preparation required to get them right.)

Big character dining -

Sometimes the tourists get it right !
