This was a return visit for me and my husband and we found it just as delightful as our first visit two years ago. The hotel was a palazzo at one time and you enter through a magical courtyard before walking up a flight to the reception area. The owners, Ivana and Gio, are gracious hosts for this delightful stay. Our room had a magnificent view of miles of fields below and mountains in the distance. The breakfast served in the grand reception area was worth the additional expense and a fun place to chat with other visitors. Gio offers personal driving tours and is a most knowledgeable tour guide, sharing his bits of wisdom and historical knowledge. If the weather is inclement, there is a comfy family room for guests to enjoy, and also for the beautiful days, a roof terrace that invites you to open a bottle of wine and take in the sweeping views. The hotel is centrally located atop this hilltown, just doors off the Piazza Grande. It's where history embraces you...and you embrace history. Submitted by Iowa City, IA, USA, happy travelers.

Reading about this inn in a well-known guide book and from our own observations of the website, we were very excited to book our stay at the Meuble il Riccio. From the moment we walked into Gio and Ivanna's embracing welcome and the lovely and comfortable main room, we felt as though we had finally settled into the Tuscan vacation that we had been fantasizing about. Upon entering the courtyard from the street we knew that all descriptions of this lovingly appointed 13th century palazzo were understated. Our room (camere 6) was comfortable and cozy on the rainy night that we arrived. And even though it lacked the sweeping view of some of the other rooms, we took full advantage of the rooftop terrace and the panaramic vista of the village and countryside. (We had originally tried to book two nights here, but even with some rearranging and juggling with our itinerary we could only manage one night. In the future, we will definitely book early to make Meuble il Riccio our "home base" for our next trip to Tuscany.) Gio's restaurant and sightseeing recommendations were right on and Ivanna's breakfast spread was delicious and homey (not to mention that Ivanna's cappuccini were the best we had in Italy.) We found Meuble il Riccio to be very reasonable, it's in a great location just off the village's main piazza and the gracious hospitality of Gio and Ivanna was the best we encountered during our two week tour of Tuscany. We felt like family during our short stay and can't wait to go back.

Staying at this guesthouse (Inn) is certainly one of my best memories of Italy. The inn itself, along with the owners, Gio and Ivana, typlify the best of Italy: stunning architecture, grand public rooms, quaint and comfortable guest rooms, excellent food and the best capuccinos! The host and hostess could not have been nicer or more gracious. Upon arrival I felt like I was being welcomed into the family. In the morning Ivana greeted me with a small hug and a warm smile. Say yes to the breakfast. All the pastries are homemade by Ivana and the breakfast itself was one of the best I had. In addition to the homemade pastries, local salami and cheese, fresh orange juice and a variety of breads and cereals were provided. And did I mention the capuccinos? Simply the best. Don't miss the rooftop terrace with 360 degree views of Tuscany. From the moment I entered through the handsome courtyard, with the Madonna and child smiling down upon me, I loved the inn. There were no disappointments. My stay here is a great memory. The hospitality was simply first rate.

We wanted to prolong our trip to Italy after a 12-day cruise in the area. We opted to discover Tuscany, a region praised unanimously. We looked for a remote area rather than close to the cities like Firenze or Pisa and for a typical old inns. Meuble Il riccio was recommended in the Frommers' Traveller Guide and the information obtained on the internet supported the recommendation. Not only the small Inn met our expectations, the owners are extremely warm and welcoming. Ivana prepares great pastries for breakfast and both of them make sure that wa are totally satisfied in their city. We will gladly go back when we return to Tuscany.

My partner and I spent two nights in the meuble il riccio during mid-September when we were driving through Tuscany. Our experience was generally positive, and to the extent that we were perhaps a bit disappointed, that might be chalked up to the fact that we were nearing the end of our trip and tired out, and the reviews on this site were so overwhelmingly enthusiastic that we were expecting it to be the absolute highlight (which it was not).

First, for the positives. The public areas of the hotel are beautiful and chalk full of period pieces- the proprietors Ivana and Gio have clearly gone to great lengths to make the hotel feel authentic and welcoming and it shows. The highlight is a remarkable roof top terrace looking out over Montelpuciano and the surrounding countryside where you can take your glass of wine and watch the sun go down (the hotel has a bar where you can buy drinks, or you can bring your own wine). Our room was somewhat less awe-inspiring (very simple and small), but this is a pensione, not a luxury hotel, and it was perfectly clean, comfortable, and well furnished (we could have done without the plastic crucifix on the wall, but this is Italy). Breakfast, while not a bargain at 8 euros, was also delicious (at least some of it freshly baked by Ivana).

The main negative, which was not really Ivana and Gio's fault, was actually Montelpuciano. The town is aesthetically stunning, but also overrun by tourists and very much taken with its own preciousness, and after spending time in the less frequented parts of Tuscany we found it to be a little tedious. In addition, to be frank, almost everyone who visits from abroad (at least in September) appears to be over 40 and married. Although Ivana and Gio were nothing but polite, their specialty clearly lies in entertaining middle-aged or older patrons. We are a gay couple in our late 20s, and it seemed clear that they didn't know quite what to make of us (although again, they were perfectly pleasant).

On a final note, the only major criticism of the hotel that I would offer is that they need to be more clear about fringe charges. When we arrived we asked if there was a lavanderia in Montelpuciano because we had run out of clean clothes, and the response was no, but that the meuble would be happy to do a small load of laundry for us. We assumed (a tad naively) that this was just a courtesy, and so gave them the bare minimum, and also did not complain when they lost several articles. In fact when we left they charged us 20 euros for the service. There was nothing wrong with this in principle, but it took us by surprise (and we found the charge to be exhorbitant for what we gave them).

Meuble Il Riccio is a delightful hotel in the historic centre of Montepulciano and provides a great base from which to explore southern Tuscany. Hosts Gio and Ivana go out of their way to make their guests feel really welcome.

The building itself is steeped in history and yet has all the trappings of modern day living. Everything is clean and comfortable and there is the feeling that you have joined the family for the duration of your stay.

The morning starts with Ivana’s delicious coffee and homemade cakes for breakfast, a good dose of Gio’s humour and advice - only if you want it - on where to go and what to see. There are plenty of good restaurants within easy walking distance serving local Tuscan food.

We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Meuble Il Riccio to anyone travelling in the area and we will certainly visit this wonderful hotel again when we next visit Italy.
