One of the best lunches we have had in a long time. Walking in to the restaurant we didn't know what to expect, but we were warmly welcomed to the upstairs, old canteen style restaurant sala. The big tuscan style wooden tables, the decor & the service are big pluses for this restaurant. There was a wine tasting in progress as we were seated for lunch, so we were also treated to a quick lesson on the history of the famous Montepulciano Canteen. The Bruschetta & Meat we ordered were absolutely delicious & perfectly matched with a local red wine. Post lunch, we toured their underground Canteen - great opportunity for those interested in local wine production. Would definitely return here!

We had a wonderful dinner here . Chef Lilian and her husband Jonathan were the perfect hosts.
The food and wine is out of this world.
Also a great place to have a glass of wine and watch the sun go down

We stayed in Montepulciano for 5 nights. We were told to go to Gattavecchi from friends in Denmark. Actually a winedealer who sell Gattavecchi-wine in DK. (our wine-pusher)...Normaly when you get those tips from "Friends". its a werry personal tip....But this time it hit the nail. The warm perfect settings, the warm welcome and the stunning view, to the tuscany landscape and the little kitchen, where a small theater of life and cooking enjoyed us. We had "Lillians Dream" i think. Lots of bruschettas with cheese, tomato and tuscany spice. Off course the local red Gattavecchi.
The dishes we had where simple tasty and delivered with love...Dont miss out a little wine-tasting
with af bit of cheese and sausage. The wine celler is under the church right beside but ask your waiter. Will be back.

The restaurant is very caracteristic with a volted ceiling and wine cellars underneath. You could have individual tables or share long ones. They explained that they had been very full at lunch so some items were lacking from the menu. We tried several wines during the meal but preffered the riserva Poggia alla Sala without a doubt. The service was a bit slow and the restaurant wasn't full. The starters were good and we opted for a meat second course . It was good but not excellent. The desserts we were given a selection to try , all were home cooked one banana strudel was a bit hard but we guessed it was more of a brazillian tradition. The waitress and host were charming and friendly. We would go back .

After walking Montepulciano we were ready for sustenance and rest, and spotted this charming Cantina with outdoor seating overlooking the Tuscan hills. The food was very good, but one of the wines we drank was spectacularly good. As we were leaving someone at the next table suggested we tour the wine cellar. We hadn't realized there even was a wine cellar, and sure enough beneath the restaurant and the church next door were gigantic barrels of wine. The labels on the barrels showed Gattavecchi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, The church and the cellars were built as a convent in the year 1252, and later became the monastery Padri dei Serviti. The wine we had tasted was Gattavecchi Riserva dei Padri Serviti, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, made right in the basement! When we returned home, we went to our local super wine store to buy some Tuscan wines and one of the labels looked very familiar. I went home and compared it to our photos from Montepulciano, and lo and behold it was the wine we had enjoyed over lunch, and that was aging in the barrels beneath the church. We now have a new "House Wine", one filled with great memories.
