“A beautiful villa in Southern Tuscany”
Reviewed July 29, 2006

Villa Poggiano is a delightful place within a mile from Montepulciano, south of Siena. We stayed there for four days during our recent trip to Tuscany and wish we could stay much longer! It was a highlight of our trip and is one of the places which you do not want to leave once you are there.

It is a late-17th century villa restored by the current owners several years ago. The main building and several cottages are surrounded by an old park on one side and an olive grove on the other. The views are exceptional wherever you look. And for those who like to soak in water, there is a large pool with all the amenities.

You will enjoy a brunch-style, elaborate breakfast in the nicely decorated dining room. A selection of local cheeses and prosciutto, bread with several kinds of local fruit preserves, pastries, and yes, milk and cereal and eggs on demand. I am sure I forgot to name something. The breakfast at the Villa Poggiano was the best we had in Italy.

If you do not have definite plans for driving around, ask the owner/manager of the villa for ideas: Stefania is very friendly and helpful.

Suggestion: take a day trip to Assisi (an hour and a half drive from the villa). It is absolutely beautiful and the best maintained hilltop town we have seen – the other, true highlight of the trip.

For fine dining, try the Grotto Restaurant near Montepulciano (less than a mile from the villa). We found it to be the best in the area (including restaurants in Pienza).

We selected Villa Poggiano on the basis of previous Trip Advisor reviews and they were spot on. Villa Poggiano is in a a beautiful setting just outside Montepulciano and the view of the town when you drive out of the villa is one of the most memorable of the holiday. The entrance and the tree-lined driveway to the villa give you a sense of the style of the place from the moment you arrive and it does not disappoint.

We were in Room 9, which was one of the rooms separate from the main villa. When we arrived at our room the first thing we saw to our horror was that to the right of our room there was building work underway to add further rooms. As we had booked this place for its peaceful setting we were immediately concerned by this but were assured that there would be no actual building work taking place until after the summer season. They were true to their word and we were not disturbed. It will be interesting to see how these new rooms turn out and will be priced as they looked as they would not have the countryside views of the rooms in front.

Room 9 was lovely, albeit with a slight smell of mothballs in the antique wardrobe. The room was tastfully decorated, spacious with a large bathroom, bedroom and separate living room. It was wonderful to be able to open the shutters in the morning to a view of the rolling Tuscan hills with nothing but the sound of birdsong.

The pool setting is beautiful and as most visitors to this area tend to be out and about during the day we were often the only guests using it. One word of warning though, it's unheated so brace yourself before taking the plunge into the icy depths during May.

Breakfast setting is quite formal but service and selection is good.

Finally, the manager Stefania is wonderful (and beautiful!). Nothing is too much trouble and she is very helpful with any query, from restaurant recommendations through to Uffizi bookings in Florence.

Our 2 week jaunt through Italy incuded a 2 night stay at the lovely villa. Photos and descriptions of the rooms and grounds do not do it justice. We stayed in the suite, which I would highly recommend splurging on as it is well worth the extra money. The suite has an enourmous living room with 18 foot celings and a small balcony overlooking the countryside. The bedroom is equally as large.

The grounds of the villa are straight out of a storybook - fountains, flowers, and an amazing marble swimming pool.

From Villa Poggiano, you are within 5-45 minutes of many great hill towns including Pienza and Montepulciano, and you can also drive to Siena easily.

Stefania is a lovely host, she knows all the good restaurants and is very helpful with reservations and driving directions.

I cannot say enough about our stay at Villa Poggiano. The photos on the web site only begin to do justice to how stunning the setting and villa are. We were upgraded to a huge suite which was just outstanding, but were able to look at some of the other rooms, and all were beautiful.

The villa is perched on a hill between Pienza and Montepulciano, which are two of my favorite towns in Tuscany, and both are not to be missed. The location is perfect for a few reasons: you get stunning views of Pienza and Montepulciano in the near distance, flanked by olive groves and vineyards in the foreground. Also, both towns are close enough that you can dine in either one - and there are many incredible restaurants from which to choose - and drive back home in just minutes. Finally, you're smack in the middle of the absolute best scenery and sights in Tuscany; there are a wide variety of lovely villages, abbeys, monasteries, vineyards and more, all within a 30-minute drive in any direction. The Tuscan landscape in this area is almost indescribable in its lush beauty.

The grounds are immaculately kept, and you pretty much feel like Italian royalty wandering around the gardens and enjoying the views. It was too cold in late-October to use the pool, but it looked wonderful and I could imagine relaxing by it in the summertime.

Breakfasts were beyond delicious and served in a lovely, formal but relaxed dining area, with classical music piping softly in. Fresh home-made pastries and little cakes were always waiting for us, along with terrific coffee and fresh breads, cheeses, cereals and yogurts.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the service Stefania provided was impeccable. She guided us to the best restaurants in the area for lunch and dinner each night, and provided general advice and hints without being the slightest bit intrusive. It was a pleasure to get to know her and her beautiful villa. We will definitely be back!

My wife and I spent a day and a night at Villa Poggiano last October; our only regret is that we could not have stayed for a much longer period. We occupied a charming second-floor room in one of the newly-restored guest houses which had been tastefully furnished and afforded a glorious, pre-Renaissance view of the Val d'Orcia. Stefania, our elegant and refined hostess, spoke excellent English and went out of her way to be engaging and helpful. God willing, my wife and I will return, this time with all our children, and, when we do, we will stay for a much longer period.

The villa sounded good in our Frommer's book, so we went for it. It was one of the best decisions of our vacation! We felt like it was our own private villa, it was so quiet and secluded. And cool under the pines, even though the day was hot. It was easy to find and not far from town.

The views were spectacular, the place Stephania sent us for dinner was great (such friendly service!), the bed was comfortable, the bathroom huge and beautifully fitted out, and did I mention the views? We will be back, and we'll stay longer next time.

We just spent one fantastic week at Villa Poggiano. It is by far the best secret in Tuscany and gives everyone a chance to see the REAL Tuscan countryside. Stefania is one of the most friendly and helpful operators of a hotel anywhere and once you meet her you will understand why we say that. Her assistant Angela is also a very warmhearted and wonderful person. One week was not too much time as we loved the Villa and took all of Stefania,s suggestions as to what to see and how to get there by car.
We have been to Italy 21 times now and this hotel ranks with the nicest of them all..Don,t miss it if you are planning to see the small wine villages etc in Tuscany
