“full of character, a bit worn”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2014

We stayed here for a few nights in the winter and enjoyed our visit. I think we were actually the only people in the hotel and it was very quiet in town. The hotel is located right inside the old town gate at the bottom of the (steep) hill and directly across from La Bottega del (Vino) Nobile, a TERRIFIC place to sample area wines and also to eat dinner. Hotel décor is old-fashioned and a bit worn with a mix of some beautiful and charming furniture and art. There are lots of common areas like a room with a billiard table and the landings are all furnished with antiques -- lots of nice books for travelers to browse. No elevator (I don't think).

Our room faced away from the square towards the east and Lago Trasimeno -- the small patio-balcony with a couple of chairs allowed us to appreciate the spectacular view. Noise was not a factor for us off-season, but it seems it can get noisy in the square at night in warmer weather -- so not a bad idea to ask for a room on this side, plus you get great views.

We had one large double and a single bed in a decent sized room with a wardrobe, large tv (good reception) and an electric kettle and small fridge. I found the beds in our room to be firm and pretty comfortable, maybe we just got lucky. The bathroom was small, with a shower stall and an outdated (and not very effective) hair dryer. The bathroom could definitely use an upgrade.

Breakfast was abundant and delicious. Espresso, cappuccino, etc and eggs made to order, fruit juices, fresh fruit, a wide variety of rolls, yogurt, cereals, pastries and -- best of all -- a selection of the most scrumptious cheeses. The fresh pecorino was truly out of this world! Also salami, ham, etc. Really excellent breakfast.

The staff was helpful and very attentive.

Montepulciano is truly a gem. The climb up through town is pretty strenuous but full of Renaissance palazzo, beautiful piazza, churches, and local family wine shops with tastings -- and terrific cheeses, cured meats, honey, etc for sale, many from the surrounding farms. San Biagio, just outside the town walls and downhill, is an amazingly compact Renaissance church and beautifully situated, though the interior was closed for renovations when we visited. It was still absolutely worth the walk and one of our favorite places in Italy.

Although every view in this town is wonderful, the views toward Pienza are jaw-droppingly gorgeous and the way sun and clouds shift color and light on the hills is my favorite memory of this part of Italy.

You gotta go!

Room Tip: ask for a room facing east (away from the piazza) and higher up, for spectacular views and less nois...

We very much enjoyed our 5 nights here. The manager and staff are attentive, friendly and certainly speak enough English to cater to their guests. Reserved parking spots are inside the city walls right outside the door to the hotel. They helped haul our large suitcases up two flights of stairs. Breakfast was very good and included eggs made to order and fresh squeezed orange juice. The hotel has old world charm. The only down side to the location: Local bars can get a bit loud at night.

Very friendly and helpful staff, particularly with helping us to get a parking spot on a really busy day in Montepulciano - much appreciated! The hotel itself is traditionally decorated, and there are a few unexpected things like a billiard table in one of the reception rooms! We had an absolutely lovely view from the balcony across to Lake Trasimeno. The room itself was cool and quite comfortable; the bathroom was large with a good shower. Breakfast was lovely - choice of eggs, clearly freshly-squeezed orange juice and a nice selection of cereal and pastries with good quality Italian coffee. Wifi good - fast and strong signal. The hotel's location is right in the middle of the town so it's a good base for exploring. Definitely recommended for a stay in Montepulciano.

Room Tip: Room 25 has a lovely balcony with a beautiful view across to Lake Trasimeno.

We spent two nights in this hotel, the first in room facing the square. Room was ugly and bed was really uncomfortable. Really noisy. Breakfast was substandard compared to our other hotels. Would have moved hotels but fortunately young lady at desk agreed to move us to a room which looked out over the hillside. Looked like a different hotel... Not sure why our first room was so bare and sparse but our second was a huge improvement. Think if they sprused some things up a bit eg wifi very sporadic and breakfast could be much better, the location of the hotel is great and it could be a really nice place to stay.

This hotel is styled like and old house. The bedroom was pretty basic - kind of what you would expect if you were staying in an 1800s home. Sweet staff, spoke little English but we were able to communicate fine. Great breakfast with good cheese, meat, fresh squeezed OJ, granola, croissants. Parking right out front, gave us pass to drive in the city when we checked in (we had paid meter outside the city zone for one hour in order to go get the pass and drive in). It is in a good location and was easy to find.
Shower had lukewarm water and a broken door so it was difficult to shower without flooding the bathroom, but we managed. There is a hair dryer in the bathroom but it was very old. Kind of fun to use before your hand starts burning.
They provided simple toiletries- soap/shampoo. The only really negative thing was that the bed made my back hurt because the mattress was very old and sunken down in the middle. We absolutely loved Montepulciano! I would highly recommend going to the restaurant below the hotel and getting the pork and potatoes - it was my favorite meal in Italy!

nice old hotel, INSIDE the town walls, you have to drive the original wall to get there! spacious rooms, we opted for quieter room facing the countryside and nice breakfast. had nice little balcony overlooking the Tuscan countryside,.convenient parking and nice full breakfast, with proudly inhouse baked goods!

Room Tip: if you want quieter, ask for room facing the countryside.

Each year we visit Montepulciano staying in this old fashioned hotel and we like its every corner full of antiques. All distinguished ladies - owners of the hotel - are so polite and courteous that it is a pleasure to stay in this hotel. Breakfast is on the top copmparing to other hotels... Parking available... Location super....
Walking along El Corso you cannot fail to notice Enoteca Il Greppo and thus to taste great wines while also tasting the “produzione propria” of Il Greppo ... pecorino ... olive ... salami ... All this in the company of Ms. Sarah - beautiful hostess of the Enoteca ... No need to point out that Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Il Greppo Antico is one of the most appreciated in our family and a visit and shop at the Enoteca is also our fixed point during stays in Italy ...
Sarah, thank you for your hospitality and Italian hot smile and see you next year ....
We highly recommend Albergo Il Marzocco and Enoteca Il Greppo as the places for stay and tastings of beauty of Montepulciano region.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Behind the Medicean column there is the Hotel Il Marzocco, the oldest in town. It was built in 1500 as a farm of the nearby convent. In 1860 it became a hotel and since the early 1900s it has been run by the same family. The hotel looks like a large house where the atmosphere of the old times is still kept. Its bedrooms open on wide lounges that, like the reading room and the sitting room, are furnished with genuine XIX century pieces. Some bedrooms have balconies or terraces with a view on the valleys, other ones have their windows over the Renaissance houses of the old town. The hotel has had important guests like actors, writers, politicians, all of whom are fond of the great view from its terraces. A free parking area is available, as well as comfortable relaxing spaces and a wide dining room where breakfast is served from a rich buffet with home-made bread and cakes, jams and pies. Among the roses of the garden, the Canada creeper climbs until the terraces and creates a pergola up to the roof, at first green in summer, than all red in September and yellow during the autumn. Red geraniums at the windows, together with the old lace curtains, add to the building a perfectly romantic touch. Wi-Fi Connection. We accept pets. Free Indoor garage for motorbikes and bicycles. ... more   less
