Podere Le Manzinaie
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 10, 2011

Le Manzinaie is set in the heart of stunning Tuscany within easy reach of many of its rich cultural and historical towns. The quality of the accomodation a renovated farmhouse is excellent and attention to detail is everywhere.

You can probably find many converted farmhouses in Tuscany but what made the real difference for us at Le Manzinaie was the hospitality and warmth we received from Alice and the family. They were just fantastic and even before we arrived helping us with travel directions.

On arrival they made us feel like one of the family. The Tuscan dinner they prepared on the night we came was unforgetable and they helped us plan our stay with lots of local tips on what to see and do and even arranged wine tasting nearby.

We will definately be back!

We've stayed here three times now and we wouldn't want to stay anywhere else in Tuscany. From the welcome to departure, everything is perfect. Le Manzinaie is beautifully set up, wonderful hosts, excellent facilities, ideally located for all the key sites (and sights): Montepulciano, Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, Volterra, Orvieto, even Rome (by train; tickets arranged by the owners) were visited on this trip. But, if you wanted to, you could just stay and relax by the pool, in peace and quiet.

For us, Le Manzinaie provides everything you need for a great holiday!

If you are visiting Tuscany I highly recommend staying at Le Manzinaie. This is an old villa that has been lovingly restored by the family that owns and lives in it. While we were impressed by the facilities, the most memorable part of our stay was how welcome we felt at Le Manzinaie. Our hosts are in the hospitality business because they genuinely like people. We felt more like friends of the host family than guests of the hotel! We hope to revisit Le Manzinaie again in near future.

My family and I had traveled through U.A.E, England and Scotland and had just had a hectic week in Rome, when we came to our next destination - Le Manzinaie. Many months before when I had googled' family friendly Tuscany agriturismo' I had no idea what a gem this find would be. It's fantastic! Perfect location for all of the joy Tuscany has to offer, but even more special is the family that cares for you when you arrive. The facilities are delightful and the children really appreciated having some space to run, a pool to swim in and even a gorgeous dog to play with. We all loved sharing their family dinner and we especially appreciated the driving directions to the nearby attractions and facilities. After our week at Le Manzinaie we were ready to embark on the rest of our European adventure. Le Manzinaie was the perfect reprieve and had we not had that week to recharge our batteries, we may have cut our whole holiday short!

As with most TripAdvisor devotees, my search for the perfect Tuscany Villa began by compulsively reading visitor comments, comparing reviews, charting distances, and scrutinizing photos. I compared the "#1" rated accommodation to those that I had selected as possibilities for our week in Tuscany. Paying close attention to how guests are treated, I looked at how each villa owners' work and leisure ethic influences their approach to their guests. Meticulousness, warmth, laughter, and generosity are key in my final choice.

In the reviews of Le Manzionaie, guests wrote about this beautiful Tuscany villa and their experience as if they had become part of the villa's "family". Comments from each visitor reflected on Le Manzionaie's owners' heartfelt generosity, zest for life, love of food and wine and devotion to the beauty of their home, surrounding hillsides and Italian art. The 103 reviews for this villa were so consistent. Everyone felt the same level of attachment to the owners, Marzia and Fiore, their daughter, Alice and their cute little dog, Rufus.

My husband and I just left Podere Le Manzionaie after a week's stay, and have returned home feeling as if Marzia, Fiore, Alice and Rufus are truly our family. When we arrived at the villa and spoke in English, using a bit of Italian, we experienced the spirit of Marzia and Alice's Mother-Daughter relationship that would permeate our visit. Simultaneously Marzia's Italian would be translated by Alice to English, our English would be translated by Alice to Marzia and we would all laugh! We did find that their English was quite good; nonetheless, the flow of languages between us made for an immediate connection. The fact that Alice is a Language major at college in Siena is not surprising. We spoke of having recently visited Cape Cod and both mother and daughter excitedly remembered previous guests from Cape Cod. I thought perhaps the Cape guests were from last month, but they were from two years ago. [ NOTE: There are stacks of guest photo albums lovingly kept by Marzia, so she remembers each guest. ] Fiore left his work on the villa and came to greet us, as did Rufus their dog, tail wagging his welcome.

We laughed about our driving in Italy, were given a detailed touring document, personally prepared, and were told with marked enthusiasm about restaurants, the "must see" Abby, the Orvieto Cathedral and Il Mago di Oz, the Crete drive, Lake Trasimeno and ,of course, Montepulciano and Cortona. As we were moving into our beautiful apartment, Fiore brought us glasses of wine from his friend's vineyard. Of all the delicious wines in Italy, and there were many, the wine served at Le Manzionaie was the most exceptional.

Breakfast is provided for your first morning, including eggs, cheese, meat, milk, juice, jam, breads and delicious espresso. The bedroom and kitchen are romantic, all rooms are extremely comfortable and exceptionally clean, with bright red geraniums in Italian terra-cotta and bird song that includes the Cuckoo, my first other than from a clock. Reading, drinking wine and sitting beside the crystal clear pool, I was among flowering shrubs and rose bushes, close to the fruit orchard when swallows swooped down gathering water for their own drink. It was heavenly.

The iron gate entrance and all iron on the property is handmade by Fiore, the tall cypress trees and gardens that you see on entering the villa are designed and constructed by Marzia and Fiore, guided by Marzia's dream of her ideal home. The gardens, flowers, art paintings, buildings, interior designs, pool, apartments, and orchards are all built, painted and maintained by Marzia and Fiore. Marzia, the creative genius, also has a green thumb and will share her secrets if asked. You will see her flowers throughout, each flower scrupulously pruned by tiny garden sheers. Alice is the internet master, who manages correspondence and reservations with professional expertise. The entire family is involved in making your stay memorable.

On our first day trip out of the villa, as we drove through the iron gates, Fiore and Marzia were replacing the fencing adjacent to the highway. The job was complete when we returned late that night. I include this to emphasize the hard work that you will witness when you choose Le Manzionaie. Just so you know, while you are away on your day trips, and if you return late at night, sweet Marzia will be thinking about you and worrying that perhaps you have had car trouble or are lost.

Additionally the villages of Siena, Volterra, Montalcino, and Assisi are all within driving distance. The country side around the villa is filled with fields, olive trees, vineyards and Cyprus trees.

You may have read about Le Manzinaie's family dinner or the cooking class. As Marzia described her menu to us, she literally jumped off the end of her toes as she detailed the next course. Counting Fiore's homemade drinks, Marzia, Fiore and Alice served us a 15 course gourmet dinner that included Fried Sage, Strawberries dipped in Chocolate, Apricot/Peach Tart (fruit from their orchard), Eggplant Polenta Parmigiana, Homemade Tagliolini with Lemon Sauce and Beer Chicken with Bay Leaves and Juniper Berries. The dinner and the company were the highlight of our trip!

Just as so many people have selected Le Manzinaie and have had the same exceptional experience that we did, choosing it will be the best choice of your Italy trip. Buon Viaggio!

My wife planned our entire 16 day trip to Italy. She read many reviews that gave this villa the very best rating, so she scheduled seven days there. It turned out to be the highlight of our entire trip. This villa is beautiful, immaculate, beautifully designed, with grounds teeming with fruit trees, flowers, hand made iron work, a fish pond, pool, gazebos, and so much more. The Villa is owned and operated by Marzia, Fiori, and their beautiful daughter Alice, with a little help from their cute dog Rufus. The entire family is so welcoming, that by the time we left after a week, we felt like we were leaving family, and had tears in our eyes. You leave here with hugs, not just handshakes! We definitely plan to return.
All of the grounds are maintained by this beautiful family, and the phenomenal renovations, completed over the 19 years they have owned this villa were also completed by Fiori and Marzia. Fiori can do anything. He even made all of the iron work, including the lamp posts, the entry gate and so much more.....and he cooks too!!! Marzia maintains all of the beautiful flowers, and is quite an expert. She is also a very talented artist who has painted scenes of Tuscany on the walls of each apartment, along with flowers and other beautiful images. And she cooks with the expertise of a chemist! If you stay there a week, you get to have dinner with the family. This was a wonderful experience, and WOW, that was one special dinner! This is a fun group. You will laugh, joke and simply enjoy being there. The Villa is perfectly located so one can easily drive to Orvieto, Sienna, Pienza, Montepulciano, Cortona, Volterra, Castiglione del Lago, and many more places. Alice and Marzia will give you tips about things to see and offer as much help as you want. When we arrived they even presented us with a binder of information they have compiled, including precise directions everywhere. I did not mind driving the roads of Italy at night, so we frequently did not arrive back to the Villa until midnight or one a.m. Each renter is provided with their own remote control to the entry gate, so arriving back late is not a problem. Never-the-less my wife suspected that Fiori and Marzia worried about us when we returned so late, so she asked if they waited up for us. Sure enough, just like protective parents, they confessed that they often stayed awake until they heard us arrive home safely. On a one to ten scale, this Villa is a ten plus (10+). I highly recommend it. You will not be disappointed!

For the ultimate Tuscan villa experience Podere Le Manzinaie is the perfect place. We have stayed there three times; with our daughter’s new in-laws; with our family of eight to celebrate our fiftieth wedding anniversary and on our own. Each visit was a highlight experience. The amenities cover all needs and expectations from comfortable beds, scrupulous cleanliness, true old-world architecture, decoration and charm, an impressive approach through iron gates up a 325 foot long avenue of hedges, cypress and hand-wrought lamps to the 1886 villa. The large car park has shaded canopies for protection from the sun.

For sun lovers there is a light-drenched lawn with umbrellas and chaises surrounding a sparkling swimming pool. For shade seekers there are three vine-covered pergolas wreathed with fragrant roses. For those wishing privacy there are secluded apartments with personal gazebos tucked behind hedges or under flowering trees. For those who want company there is the beautiful garden to share, cooking lessons to attend then the marvelous conviviality of a communal dinner with the food you have prepared, many wines and much laughter.

Thirty years ago this property was a group of derelict buildings in a barren field. Today’s beauty is a product of Marzia and Fiore’s vision, enterprise and hard work. What makes Le Manzinaie unique is the hosts. Marzia is the designer for the villa, an artist and a fabulous cook. Fiore, who can fix anything, has created a fruit orchard and vegetable garden for the visitors’ use. He cooks as well. Alice, their delightful daughter, speaks not only Italian but English and French and is learning Spanish and Mandarin. Their warmth, their friendliness, their genuine concern for your comfort and pleasure make you feel like family, not just clients. Nothing is too much trouble to make your visit enjoyable.

The location of the villa is excellent for visiting the surrounding areas of interest and beauty and historical significance. There are printed instructions supplied of how to get there. They provide suggestions of interesting places to see, good restaurants within easy distance. They will book your tickets for galleries, exhibitions, trains or cars. They will arrange transportation to the train station or the airport. We can’t say enough about the care, generosity, friendliness and concern these three wonderful people exhibit to those who come as strangers and leave as friends.
