“Awesome location and views of Tuscany”
Reviewed August 13, 2012

We loved our one bedroom apartment with amazing views of the Tuscan countryside. The evening breezes were fabulous with all the windows open. Francesco and family are often busy running their restaurant, but very helpful and accommodating. We really enjoyed having our morning cappuccino on the patio.

If you want to experience living inside one of these walled towns, this is the place to do it. Just be prepared for some serious up hill walking! (Great exercise)

Room Tip: The upstairs one bedroom apartment on the back side has the best views of the tuscan countryside, an...

We absolutely adored Osteria del Borgo. The small orange bus that takes you from the bus station (if you don’t have a car), basically drops you off in front of the hotel. We were initially torn between wanting to stay in an agriturismo, but not wanting to be isolated in the countryside at night, without access to restaurants and wine bars. The bed and breakfast is located about 10 steps off Montepulcian’s main square, and was the perfect choice for us. So many times on our trip we mentioned our thankfulness for choosing this route, where we could both have wine at dinner, or pop back into the room for a little nap in the day.

The outer facade is of the restaurant, which has indoor seating but also a breathtaking view terrace. Having an afternoon snack and bottle of wine on the view terrace became a tradition of ours on our four day stay.

Our “room” was really a two story apartment with sweeping views of the Tuscan country side, a kitchen and dining area, a vaulted two-story living room with a bridge above (that connected the bedroom and bathroom to a seating area in front of a window that overlooked the view - which is where we would take our breakfast tray each morning), and skylights that operate by remotes on the wall. Because Montepulciano is built on a hill, and because the hotel is built on the edge of the cliff, our particular room had breathtaking views from the living room windows. It was nice to just come back to our room with a bottle of wine after wine-tasting all day.

The owners of Osteria del Borgo are warm, friendly, and go out of their way to be helpful. Upon our arrival, they brought out glasses of prosecco for us to sip while we waited - as our room wasn't quite ready yet. Also, I noticed that the owner carried our heavy suitcase to our room. I had read other reviews online and wondered if that might be in response to someone else's complaint that they had not done that for them. Personally, I don't think it should be a hotel proprietor's responsibility to cart my luggage, but I do point it out because I think it's reflective of their conscientious nature and good customer service. While the father and mother don’t speak much English, they were always quick to offer a smile and inquire of our needs. Their son, Fransesco, speaks great English and is at the hotel regularly. In one event where he was not there in the morning, the staff actually called him at home to get a question answered for me.

When we choose hotels, we tend to lean towards more family-run, personal experiences, vs. modern ammenities. Osteria del Borgo was charmingly rustic, and I felt like we got to chat a bit with the staff (who actually sent us a postcard and note along with the wine we ordered, how thoughtful is that!?).

The restaurant and wine-bar has a really vast selection of the local wineries, and the owners made some awesome recommendations for us. Their shipping prices were competitive (it’s just expensive in general to send wine home) - but they were super kind and even let us throw in a couple of bottles we had purchased from other venues and hadn’t had time to drink during our stay.

Overall - we found Osteria del Borgo to be an amazing value, ideally located, warm and friendly staff, and offering of the most vital amenities: view, restaurant with terrace, and breakfast with nice cappuccinos (we were especially excited about the size of their cappuccinos after having acclimated to Italy's quite petite coffees!). We would, and WILL stay there again - as will a good number of our friends as we can't stop raving about it =)

PS they were also steps away from a laundromat, which was super convenient as our stop was 2/3 through the trip and laundering our clothes just made us feel better all around!

Loved our stay here! The family is so sweet and helpful. We requested a pasta making course and dinner one night and Francesco found a lovely local woman, DENIS, who was the best teacher and cook! Our large apartment for 6 faced the main piazza -- so it was not the room with the spectacular view that we were expecting (which was a bit of a disappointment), but the apartment was nice, clean, remodeled and spacious. One of the small bedrooms has no window, except a sky light.... so which could be a bit claustrophobic. No air, but the breeze is nice up o top of this lovely hill town. Excellent value and nice place to base out of with a small group. Montepulciano is a great little hill town with plenty to see and do. Breakfast was haphazard, never really ready on time... and they just brought things upon request. Dinner one night was crowded and confusing... a lot of young people serving who need some further training... but over time could improve (I hope for their sake). Great location. Lots of stairs for people who are not traveling light. If you are looking for the room with the panoramic countryside view, it is a smaller apartment and you must specify when booking. Great value and great family!

Room Tip: Specify panaramic room with view of countryside-- only one.

Really enjoyed our stay in Montepulciano. This accommodation is really well presented and in a great location. The staff were nice and parking was not a problem.
My only 2 minor points were not issues for my wife or I, but best be aware just in case. These are....
1. No air-conditioning or fan if it gets really hot.
2. If you stay on the top floor, there are a lot of stairs to negotiate.

View from the room/apartment is absolutely stunning. Place itself is very old building (obvious) but apartments are totally tastefully renovated to connect old and new. Francesco is great owner. Very helpful and open. Food at the restaurant is great, also the vine selection. Francesco recommended a nice one for us that evening. View from the terrace is amazing.

Wow - I must say I had no idea what to expect when visiting Montepulciano for the first time, but what a pleasant surprise! The travel to get to the town isn't the easiest - we took the train to Chiusi-Chiancano, then two buses - however the second/small orange bus drops you right in Piazza Grande, mere steps away from the Osteria del Borgo.

The apartments are very spacious and inviting, with a significant amount of room for three travelers. While the only downfall would be that we had to switch apartments on our second night which was not convenient, it was also nice to see another room variation which was also large and provided all the necessary amenities. The location is perfect within the town with easy access to the main piazza, restaurants and shops. The B&B has unprecedented views of rolling Tuscan hills from the dining patio - I have never seen such an incredible view! I just wish we had stayed in one of the apartments with the view - our view in both units was into the piazza.

Francesco was an incredible help, assisting with the booking process via email and all questions we had before and during our stay - including wonderful wine recommendations (I wish I bought more Boscarelli to bring home!) Overall, a great stay in Montepulciano & thank you to Francesco and Osteria del Borgo for a great stay!
