“Hidden Gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 23, 2007

We just returned from a wonderful 4 night stay. The Hotel Astoria is a real hidden gem--about a 10 minute walk from town, so if you like peace and quiet, this is the place for you. Things here are done the old fashioned way (the right way), and the service is superb!

We booked on a half board basis (breakfast and either lunch or evening meal included), and found it great value for the money. No need to go to town for dinner, the food and wine here were excellent, the menu changes daily, and there is plenty of choice! Lunch by the pool if you wish, breakfast in the garden--couldn't be more relaxing!!

This family run hotel with excellent staff and service is truly a real Italian experience. We highly recommend it!

The Astoria says it's not for everyone - they're right. If you like noisy poolside bars with lots of activity - forget it. If you like almost complete silence, tranquil surroundings beside a lovely pool and peace to read that holiday paperback this is it. Very few of the staff speak good English. It doesn't matter. They're helpful and friendly and very patient with bumbling attempts at asking for a coffee or a snack in Italian. The rooms are spartan but lovely and just about all we could see had balconies. TV offers only CNN in English. There's no radio. Breakfast was outside most morning in quiet surroundings while watching the hotel cats sleeping on the roofs of cars. You will NOT get bacon, eggs and black pudding - good! This is an elegant hotel inside and out with piano in the foyer and flower displays specially selected and arranged fresh every two days. It's right next door to the main Terme and only a few minutes walk from the market and the main drag. If you want a good base to explore Tuscany this is it.

OK, lets get the niggles out of the way first: the hot water was not very hot, the only english speaking TV channel vanished after 1 day and when we asked for the use of an ironing board,I rather think it was the first time this request had ever been made as a bewildered chap set it up in the TV room and we had to bring my shirts downstairs!
However. this is a good hotel. The decor is that dated 1970's chic found in all of the hotels in town with quirky Italian touches - we had a chandelier in our bathroom. The room was a good size with a balcony that looked over towards the park, and was one of the larger rooms in the hotel. The room included a fridge and a safe, and the beds were turned back at night which was a nice touch. Meals were served by very friendly staff with bottles of wine around the 11Euro mark. Evening meals were very good with a good choice offered and generous portions served at the table. Breakfast was better than in other hotels we have stayed in town with the usual continental fare. The hotel has a pool and a poolside bar serving drinks and snacks. The clientele were predominantly German and we were the only Brits and the only ones with a child - who was fussed over and well looked after. The hotel is in a good position next to the park and the largest thermal spa. The hotel arranged transfer from PIsa which cost 80 euros which is expensive if there are only one or two people. The train is the other option which is inexpensive, but more hassle.
Montecatini is well placed for visiting Florence, Pisa and Lucca by train. We also visited Collodi which has beautiful gardens to visit - but do not bother with the Pinocchio park -its is rubbish and a rip-off.

I would recommend the Astoria. You will not find the high standards you may expect from some of the 4 star spanish hotels, but you will find a friendly welcome and a comfortable stay in a gorgeous part of the world.
