We do not always bother to read reviews before we go on holiday and we do travel at least twice a year, my wife, with time on her hands, checked out the hotel on Trip Advisor. Reading the review from Elizabeth S from London we were concerned as to what we would get having booked with Archers for a weeks stay. On arrival we were checked in by very courteous staff, our room was on the front of the hotel on the 2nd floor overlooking the square. The luggage arrived within 20 minutes and we were really happy with the room, very large and the décor was in keeping with the age and charm of the hotel. Our first dinner was excellent as were the staff and every other meal we had was the same standard. The hotel was spotless and although we did not get to use the pool the area was clean and well maintained. No issues with noise even when there was a midnight market in the square under our room, cleanliness was excellent and the overall presentation of the hotel exceeded our expectations. All I would say is for anybody not to raise issues at the time is very unfair and then to complain after the event is unreasonable. Well done everybody at the Grand Plaza/Locanda Maggiore.

Stayed for one week, 16th July - 23rd July. The staff were courteous and extremely helpful especially Mariano. Our room was on the first floor with access on to a large shared terraced area. Everything about the hotel was very good and although not a modern hotel had a great atmosphere about it that you don't get in a newer build. I would definately recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to explore this beautiful area of Italy. The location is perfect for this and the train station is only a short walk from the hotel. If we venture to this part again we shall be certainly be staying at the Grand Hotel Plaza.

Room Tip: Rooms 104-108 are good if you like a larger room and access to a balcony although it could be a bit noisy in the evening as you overlook a bar area however all was quiet after midnight and once your door was closed the noise doesn't present a problem.

Stayed 9 nights in this hotel from 30 July - 8 August staying in a first floor room overlooking an inner courtyard. The staff were courteous and keen to please. We raised issues about the shower in our room with the room maid one morning and the issues were sorted out by the time we were back in the evening.

We travelled independently, booking online with Travel Republic in the UK. It seems from the notice board in the hotel that Shearings, Inghams and Archers use the hotel for their tour groups.
We were intriqued by the different dining rooms. It seemed that groups were assigned different dining rooms to the independent travellers. We had breakfast in a very pleasant dining room with artwork on the walls and our dining room seemed much nicer than the others. Breakfast was continental for us but I think the groups may have been offered different breakfast.

Our room was spacious if a little dark and there was a lot of noise from the inner courtyard caused by holidaymakers talking loudly well into the small hours. However the noise was not an issue for us and we slept through it. The fridge in the bedroom was welcome. We didn't have tea/coffee making facilities in the room. I took my laptop with me on holiday and there was free WiFi in the hotel.

The location of the hotel is superb - nearly opposite an excellent patisserie and only a four minute walk to the railway station. The hotel is right in the middle of the main square and while we were there, there were street markets right outside the hotel. Shops are open until late and the locals promenade up and down the square outside the hotel until late.

Train fares are cheap and the service is regular and excellent. We travelled easily to Florence, Pisa, Lucca and Viareggio. We booked excellent tours to Siena and the fabulous Cinque Terre through Come and See Italy agency. We found Montecatini Taxis excellent for airport transfers to Pisa airport.

In terms of improvements, the bathroom was very basic and the shower adequate. It would be nice if the bar at the pool area was more regularly staffed and there was no indication that snacks were available. We would certainly have welcomed the offer of snacks pool side and in our room.

The hotel offered daily luncheon and evening dinner but we didn't book up for that and ate out.
In essence I think the staff and the location make this hotel. It has a faded charm and could do with an upgrade but the staff are welcoming and there is a homely feel to the place.

I would probably book up to stay again if visiting the area. We had a great time at the hotel.

This is the second year my son (18) and I have stayed at the Grand Plaza/Locanda; we returned because not only is it a very welcoming hotel but its location is perfect for travelling by railway, so easy to get to Florence, Pisa, Lucca and Viareggio. Last year we were disappointed not to get to Siena and this year we put that right, but we had to go on the 'official' tour company trip - it was worth it, combining Siena and San Gimignano (which I've now re-visited watching 'Tea with Mussolini') - 2 wonderful medieval towns. I agree about the red orange juice (put it in a large Campari) - it makes a lovely drink sitting out by the fountain in the cool courtyard. Our holiday this year was enhanced by meeting lots of lovely couples and it was nice to meet up in the courtyard in an evening to share news of the day and plans for the next day. The restaurant serves wonderful food and every night we ate far too much - the waiting staff are very helpful and make you feel special. I agree a kettle in the room would be lovely (yes, we're very English), but we spent so little time in our room it wasn't really a problem. Our room overlooked the side street (to be honest we never opened the shutters and enjoyed our air conditioning) but we slept like babies. I think we were the only ones who took our own towels to the pool and next time I'll happily pay 1 Euro a day for the convenience. We will return, it was probably our happiest holiday yet!

We had a fantastic week in this hotel. It is right in the centre on Montecatini and is a great base for visiting Florence, Siena and Pisa. The staff went out of their way to help us. Ask for their red orange juice which they make themselves and it is delicious. The bedroom was large with an extra large bathroom, My only complaint is that they do not have tea making facilities in the bedrooms.I would love to return o this hotel

Room Tip: Try the red orange juice
