Rouge Hotel International
Ranked #16 of 134 Hotels in Milano Marittima
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 23, 2010

We went to the Rouge for many years on our summer holidays. And were always very happy but from this year on, we will not go back any more. The reason basically is the same as for the other reviews.
The Rouge had a very good reputation in Switzerland for decades as a top beach holiday hotel at the Adria with very friendly service and an oustanding cuisine.

Well, as for the cuisine, it still is outstanding. If you have ever eaten here at this restaurant, you hardly will ever find another restaurant – even in Italy – of this level. And for this reason many people returned year after year and were very loyal customers. But as the years went on, other aspects have declined and the whole developement has reached a point, that one does not want to go there any more and the price you have to pay for the food is definitely to high, and by price I not only mean the monetarian price.

First of all, it always got more and expensive, for absolutely no obvious reason. The rooms haven't changed for decades (with the exception of some furniture some years ago) and there are no visible investements. They are very small, for instance there ist even not enough room to put a suitcase on the floor. The whole building reminds me more of a sanatorium than a 4* hotel, which it officially is but actually it is not more than 3 stars. Also, some years ago, they changed the system for dinnertime: Beforde, there was a 4 course Menue served at the table with a large choice. Now it is a buffet, still excellent in Quality, but in all a decline in class. But the prices still grew and especially the prices for the drinks are exaggerated and outrageous.

But I think the worst that could happen to the hotel was, that they expanded and added some kind of very expensive villas to the hotel, which attract all kind of low-class and wannabe celebrities like italian big-brother contestants, ex football players etc. And with this, there has developped a kind of two class society and if you are an old style hotel guest, you don't get that attention you got years ago, especially front desk – people are downright rude.

its a crying shame that this once best hotel in the area has undergone such a developpement, but you definitely don't get what you pay for and you you are not treated as a valued customer anymore. So stay away, and at most, you can visit their restaurant for a delicious meal and stay at another place, there are plenty of nice and reasonably priced hotels nearby.

The two great assets of this hotel are its location (it is right on the beach, not even a street is between the hotel and the beach) and the delicious food (fantastic italian dishes). The interior needs to be redone (part of it already has). Be aware that there is some noise from the very popular nearby beach club Papete. The hotel has its own beach, however the use of the sun chairs and sun umbrellas is not included in the room rates.
