“Great value for money in Mestre”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 12, 2013

It is not easy to find a nice Italy restaurant in Mestre for a reasonable price but Columbus is there!
We went there last week, a party of 11 for a 4 days visit of Venice but stayed in Mestre (no need to park a car and cheaper hotels). We looked for a 'not too touristic' place and found the Columbus (which was also recommended by the hotel). It says Pizzeria but it offer a varied menu on top of the pizzas. All 11 guests really enjoyed the place and food, the menu was varied enough to fit everyone. The "zuppa de cozze" was gorgeous, the pizzas with a real thin crust baked in a wood oven and the "salatone" very fresh. The portions are very generous and the staff was extremely welcoming and accommodating. The 'coperto" (bread cover) is 2 Euros per person - pretty average and they don't rip you off with a 10% added to the bill (as we experienced in Venice - without any mention of this on the menu). The price are extremely fair for the quality of the food and especially in light of the prices charged in restaurants in Venice. We warmly recommend the place.

“Casual, relaxed pizza place.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 12, 2013

After a long day sightseeing, we wanted an easy, quick dinner. 2 huge pizzas (we only ate half each, but we're not big eaters) and a 1/2 litre of house wine later, we were very satisfied. Pizzas were thin and tender (we had siciliana and capricciosa), and were served very quickly and very hot from the wood-fired oven. Don't expect crispy - they're juicy.
Claudio the waiter from Lecce was very personable and made our evening extra nice.
Free tap water doesn't seem to be a common custom in Italy. The mineral water was not expensive and the bubbly version makes it feel like a "proper" drink :-).
Cover charge in restaurants in Italy is instead of tipping, though there's nothing wrong with leaving a little extra as well if the service warrants it.
Great service, tasty and simple food, convenient location (on Via Piave). Would definitely go back.

One of the best Italian meals I have ever had. The staff was terrific, the neighborhood was fine and it was close to our hotel and the train station. We asked to see the kitchen and they were most accommodating (we wanted to see the wood pizza oven). Then our dinner came and it was terrific - no - better than that, and the chef took a personal interest in us - the food was plentiful, excellent quality, and obviously fresh ingredients and hand made pasta all around. We were VERY sorry that we had commitments on the island tomorrow but we WiLL be back here the day after. Wonderful place, don't miss it.

“Average and they get you with extras”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 27, 2013

It it a cute place and the wait staff were nice, but really they nickel and dime you. There was a 4 euro cover, presumably for the bread. We ordered one order of bruschetta and we got two. The one order consisted of ONE small piece of bread with tomatoes for 2 euros. Really? In total we paid 47 Euros for half liter of house wine, 2 small -- very small-- pieces of bruschetta, one spaghetti bolognese, one spaghetti carbonara and one plate of chicken with mushrooms and one small, bottle of water. And then we left a tip. Actually, we ate at the Hotel Bologna and had better food for less in a much smarter atmosphere. And be careful not to go here too late because the neighborhood is a bit dicey.

“Friendly and accommodating”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 16, 2013

Well placed and easy to find, as it’s located on Via Piave, one of the main streets of Mestre and near to the Hotel Villa Costanza, where we were staying.
We found the waiter very friendly and welcoming. As it was so hot we said we’d rather eat inside, if it was cooler? The waiter showed us inside and very kindly sat us near the air-conditioning unit and put it on for us! Superb seafood tagliatelli pasta, really melted in the mouth and the cold cuts to start were delicious too. This was swiftly followed by fantastic spaghetti pomodoro and exquisite sea bass! (see photo) The veal with mushrooms was delicious too. Even though it was past the time to close, we were still offered puddings! Not much English spoken here but we managed to get by.
