“Pleasantly surprised!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 7, 2013

We arrived here after a flight from Toronto, Canada and stayed two days prior to boarding a cruiseship.

The hotel is ideally located to all transport and is substantially cheaper than a Venice hotel. Checkin was prompt and very helpful and friendly. We were very happy with the size and amenities of the room especially the safe. Room cleanliness was of a very high standard. There are a number of moderately priced eateries nearby as well as a nice restaurant in house.

Overall we were very pleased with our choice of hotels for this visit.

Room Tip: Ask for non smoking at the back of the building.

The first time I visited Venice, many years ago, I discovered (by accident) that staying in Mestre is a lot more convenient and cheaper than staying in Venice.
Hotel Bologna in Mestre is ideally located: next to where the bus from the airport stops and opposite the train station to Venice.
The hotel is modern, bright, lovely and clean and quiet. There is restaurant and a bar, but for those wishing to experience local cuisine there are local cafes.
Travel to/from the airport is only ~4 euros per person. Also, travel to/from Venice by train (15 minutes) is only 4 euros per person.
Well worth a look.

BE AWARE 10 MINUTES BY TRAIN TO VENICE !!! AREA NOT GOOD
We booked and paid for this hotel 9 months ahead via lastminute.com, description claims to be 10 minutes from major sites and tourist areas, what they omit to tell you that it is 10 minutes by train !!! The area that the hotel is in appears industrial and nowhere to eat or walk in the evenings, we were very disappointed on arrival and asked to be transferred to another Best Western this was not possible as they are all separate hotels and we were refused a refund. We were so disappointed with this that we booked an alternative at our expense and relocated there. This is to highlight this to avoid other travellers being disappointed and out of pocket. Wish I had known this !

We stayed here after a cruise to have an extra day in Venice. There were many advantages, it was easy to get to airport (by taxi or bus) and easy to get into Venice as the train stops right outside of the hotel. The hotel is very spacious because there is minimal furniture. The bathroom appeared to be recently renovated. Breakfast was plentiful and staff were helpful. They ordered a taxi for us which easily held 4 adults plus all of our luggage.

We recently stayed at the Best Western Bologna Hotel prior to boarding our cruise ship in Venice. This hotel is an excellent and less expensive alternative to staying in Venice proper. The location right across from the train station in Mestre is very convenient -- a short and inexpensive bus ride from Marco Polo airport and an equally short and inexpensive train ride to Santa Lucia station and the vaporetto entrance to the Grand Canal.

Our immaculate room facing the courtyard was large by European standards and the bed was extremely comfortable. The very helpful front desk staff was great in providing answers to our questions about transportation, restaurants (Ristorante DaTura right in the hotel was excellent), and places to pick up supplies for our cruise. An ample breakfast buffet that includes eggs and bacon as well as Italian specialties and free Wi-Fi are included with the cost of the room.

Room Tip: If you want quiet, ask for a room that faces the courtyard.

We just arrived from Florence where we had just stayed in an amazing boutique hotel. So arriving to The Best Western was a little bit of a shock to the system. Not fair to them really! But it really is not what I had expected. I booked it as it had fantastic trip advisor write ups. It is a standard hotel. Rooms have no character, the beds are uncomfortable, you have to run around the shower to try and get wet. The walls are paper thin and our cuboard is a curtain!! Staff are friendly enough. Breakfast was horrible and the coffee was even worse. The area is a litttle dodgy too. The one good thing is that it is right across the road to the train station so you can get out and see the beautiful Venice.

Room Tip: We at least had a room that had been refurbished recently.

This place was immaculately clean and modern with a GREAT bathroom. Desk staff was courteous and spoke English very well. The location was excellent -- right across the street from the Venezia Mestre train station. Breakfast was a nice buffet complete with eggs and bacon. There are also two restaurants in the hotel, and both were very good, especially Ristorante DaTura. Room was large with desk space. Also, there was coffee pot and free Nescafe provided in the room.

I recommend this hotel for those who do not wish to spend a lot of money staying in the city of Venice. We were able to access Venice easily by train. It cost 1.2 Euros one way, takes about 12 minutes of travel time, and trains run every 10 or 15 minutes. Once at the train station in Venice, one can get around the city easily by vaporetto, water taxi or walking (where possible).

Also, from Mestre it is very easy to visit other cities, so this hotel and location make a lot of sense if Venice is not your only interest in this area. For example, Padova, with its important fresco collection, is only about 20 minute away and costs 2.85 Euros per person one way. Vicenza, the hometown of Palladio and filled with examples of his fine architecture, was only 40 minutes away and cost 5.70 Euros per person one way.

Additionally, this is a great spot to stay when leaving by airplane. There is a comfortable bus shuttle to the airport with a stop about 2 blocks from the hotel. It costs 6 Euros and reaches Marco Polo airport in about 20 minutes.

I highly recommend this hotel. HIGHLY.
