Grand Hotel Menaggio

Reviewed July 3, 2013

Stayed here two nights as part of an Italian tour....excellent service, upgraded room on arrival. Reasonablely priced food and one of only a few with waterfront pool that gets the sun until the mid-afternoon. It is old Italian in some ways....expect to sit or stand in the bath holding the shower in your hand and the gym is really only a storage room but that seems standard in a lot of old Italian hotels.
We ate at the Verandah al a carte restaurant one night, Gino the waiter was exceptional, food was amazing and obviously with that view it could not be faulted!
Would def return!

We stayed at this hotel as part of a Riveria Tour Group for 7 days.

Reception- effcient and helpful, particularly the guy on at nights. We did not have a plug adaptor that worked. No problem he gave us one. We lost the internet connection again reset the system and gave us a free hot spot password

Bedroom- we had a lake view room and it was furtherest away from the ferry. We sleep with both windows wide open every night and were not disturbed by noise. Our room was small and basic. Plain walls, two single beds, two bedside tables and a dressing table. A double wardrobe and a single wardrobe as you enter the room. A very small bathroom with a shower. It was physically impossible to have two people in the bathroom at the same time. However all areas were clean but some show of wear and tear. We only sleeped in the room so it was adequate.

Food- we were on half board and all dishes were served plated. The portions were small but adequate. Breakfast was the same everyday, lovely fresh bread, cheese, ham, tinned fruit and a large basket of fresh fruits bannanas, apples, peachs etc. All staff friendly except grumpy with the glassess.

Bar small with a friendly staff.

Location ideal, could not be better. A 5 minute walk to town and right next door to the ferry terminal.

Gardens & pool adequate chairs and a view to die for

Everyone has commented on it being mostly people in the 50+ age bracket, yes they were but then again most of the lake resorts were full of the older generation with the younger generation being in the minority.

In UK terms it was a good quality 3 star hotel

Room Tip: Get a room away from the ferry terminal end of the hotel

We stayed at the Grand Hotel Menaggio for 10 days this June. We booked through Citalia and used their private transfer option which, although quite expensive was very efficient and well worth the cost. We were half board and stayed in a rear facing room. Others have commented about the vagaries of the air conditioning but we were quite unaware of problems. OK the room was small as was the bathroom but the shower, again small had great power. Quite the most complicated in-room safe instructions I have encountered anywhere in the world!!. This is a hotel that really understands its core market- English speaking who have enjoyed quite a few years of retirement.
That is probably why dinner portions are on the small side but the quality was very good. In 10 days we can only recall 3 dishes being repeated. Breakfast was the same every morning but was very good- particularly the fresh bread, rolls and pastries. Pity for a 4 star hotel that the fruit was tinned.

The staff were excellent- helpful and friendly. The location is stunning- lake side with maximum 2 minute walk to the ferry terminal. Excellent swimming pool and whilst the heating might have been irregular it didn't detract from people using it. Didn't enjoy the 3 live music evenings but hey we just went for a walk. Suggest the hotel introduces sign off for dining room and bar bills - will help to avoid questions at checkout! Picking up on another comment- we were also there on a very wet Sunday evening when the public areas were packed. If the little used 'other' dining room had been opened up it would have relieved the pressure and I am sure increased the bar revenue.. 4 star- at a push but certainly much better than 3.

Room Tip: Upgrade to lake view

This is a fairly lengthy review but my summary is that this hotel is generally pretty good with some areas where I think they could improve things, and one major problem not of their making.
My wife and I stayed in a superior double with lake view on half board basis between 8 & 15 June 2013 booked through Citalia, it was actually cheaper than booking the hotel and easyjet flight separately which was surprising. Personally I think a lot of the criticism in recent reviews is unfair and doesn’t reflect our experience. The room we stayed in was bright, clean, modern and simply furnished and though we only watched it once for a few minutes the TV worked fine – and who goes to Italy to sit in their hotel room watching TV, especially the tripe in Italian TV?! The bathroom was fine and our only gripe was the bath which had whirlpool jets on the bottom of the bath, making it uncomfortable to sit in! The room and bath were always spotlessly cleaned and the towels changed at least once a day by the excellent maids and cleaners. I shared a problem with another reviewer of a different hotel, we had the hardest most uncomfortable mattress and pillows going, I woke up from the pain of my numb ears, and from my football battered knees many times. Whilst on the subject of sleep – that is the major problem alluded to earlier. If you have a lake view at the south end of the hotel (though I suspect it might be a problem for all lake view rooms) you won’t get any sleep without closing your windows and putting on the noisy air conditioning, this is because next to the ferry terminal and about 70 yards away is the pub Il Tana, which stays open until 3 or 4 o’clock every night. You will be serenaded nightly by loud music, drunken karaoke, the unattractive sound of drunken screaming teenage girls, shouted swearing helpfully in English so you can understand them, revving of mopeds, motor bikes and car engines; and one night a drunken car owner reversing into the metal railings. Presumably the hotel is powerless to stop this and the town council and police don’t care about the drunken idiots driving around their town. You’d also be surprised by how much noise can be generated by 4 people playing table football which is helpfully put in the open air to maximise the noise generated by this pub. I did laugh ironically at the reviewer who said Menaggio needed a bar as it was boring, well wrong destination mate; the lakes aren’t that sort of holiday, but the pub Il Tana will fulfil your desire. Luckily our air con did work if a little noisily.
We’ve done this sort of holiday before in Stresa with Citalia and thought the food at this hotel far superior, there is an appetiser and three courses, portions aren’t huge but it was very good – the waiting staff were efficient, friendly and helpful and we did not at any time feel they were rushing us to finish. The breakfast certainly became tedious after a few days as it was scrambled eggs and fatty bacon and the usual fruit rolls and cake, though again the coffee was better than our previous experience.
The pool was lovely with a great view across the lake, the only complaint I’d have about the bar/relaxation area is that it’s not big enough – during a torrential downpour one evening there were simply not enough seats for everyone to relax in, all the more annoying is that they have a small separate dining room with an a la carte menu which no one used all week.
Whilst we were there the clientele were overwhelmingly elderly and grey at 53 we were the youngest by a good 10 years! But then this sort of hotel and destination are not club 18-30!
I’d give this an overall rating of 4 out of 5, maybe we had a refurbished room and others do need work, but the air con worked, the TV worked, there was plenty of cupboard space and it was very clean. The view from our room and the dining room was stunning and it’s very handy for the excellent ferry service.
They should offer softer pillows and make the breakfast more varied (and have the pub Il Tana flattened) but overall I’d recommend this hotel without question.

Room Tip: Rooms on the north side facing the lake may be quieter, the ones on the south near the pub are very...

An excellent location on the lake side, with terracing and gardens surrounding an east facing swimming pool making a superb sunbathing area with access direct from the lounge. There is an adjacent passenger only and passenger/car ferry making access to other resorts, and places of interest very accessible.
It is understood that at one time this hotel had 5 stars, but was downgraded to 4. It has now fallen even further from grace. With the exception of the ground floor (reception, lounge, dining area) it is in urgent need of refurbishment. It is clean enough, (although our carpet had one or two stains and the wallpaper marked in places - not of the wear & tear type) but the decorations and fittings in our room were very tired.
The dining room is very pleasant, airy on a fine evening when the front panels are opened onto the lawns, but can be stuffy when shut up. The lounge area is comfortable, as is the bar, and there is plenty of seating outside.
Breakfast is the standard buffet style, but scrambled eggs and bacon being the only hot food every day. Evening meals are quite good, we enjoyed them, but after a week the same things came around again.
On the whole the staff are very pleasant (particularly the waiters and waitresses) but this cannot be said of one or two staff on reception and bar.
From our conversations with other guests, it would seem that the quality of the rooms vary considerably. Also, those rooms facing the road are noisy, whilst those at the rear are quieter, unless like us, your room is situated towards the left hand side of the building (viewed from the rear) when the noise from the bar on the ferry car park can be very intrusive – which can be as late as 5.00am.
Our main issue was the unavailability of the air conditioning until towards the end of our stay. Some guests thought it was on, but in fact it was just the fan re-circulating the air. A visit to reception on several occasions elicited numerous excuses for it not being turned on – e.g. waiting for a technician to turn it on, it being broken or it was still too cold for some guests (despite some elderly guests being unable to finish their evening meal because the dining room was too hot). Our room was very hot, especially in the evening and I understand that rooms on the front (facing west) were extremely hot at night
Interestingly, the heating for the swimming pool was turned off after the first day of our stay (it was thereafter quite cold) but clearly the management thought it was generally not hot enough for the air conditioning to be available.
Lake Como is very beautiful and Menaggio a lovely resort, but we would not stay at the Grand Hotel Menaggio again.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms at front because of road noise and those nearest the private bar on the ferry car park..

We went on a package tour with Riviera Travel, who placed us in this Hotel.situated right on the edge of the water in Menaggio on Lake Como. The staff were all very friendly and helpful all the time. The meals in the restaurant were excellent, well served by efficient, friendly staff. The daily 5 course menu was extensive and varied, providing excellent choice of courses and was well presented and served by first class waiters. Breakfast provided both English and Continental with some delightful variety of bread.
The swimming pool was clean and heated with drink facilities, towels and usual sun recliners.
Bedrooms were large, clean with an excellent bathroom and balcony(not all bedrooms had a balcony and lake view- so you need to ask for availability) air condition in all rooms. The Hotel had its own jetty for water taxis etc.

Live music was provided in the bar on several nights.Plenty of lifts and free wifi Internet connections

The setting for the hotel was fantastic with a 5 minute walk to the village square of Menaggio, where you could hire boats etc. The lake Como ferry service was a 2 minute walk from the hotel and took you all other villages and towns on the Lake with a very regular service including the faster hydrofoil boat.

We have been to all the Italian Lakes but we felt Lake Como to be the Queen of them all and this Hotel to be a very good place to base yourself at.

I also recommend the tour arranged by Riviera Travel which provided an excellent courier/representative with wide and varied excursions. The tour, including one free time day,was excellent value, well organised and provided all transport including airport transfer.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony with a lakeside view.

Recently stayed for 7 nights as part of Riviera Travel escorted tour to Lake Como.
Managed to change from allocated room which had part of the ceiling very low and which would have left me with curvature of the spine or a broken skull.
We found the location of the hotel ideal, being next to the ferry and only a couple of minutes walk to the centre of Menaggio or its charming promenade.
We found the staff pleasant and helpful and the dinners quite adequate, although breakfasts were rather frugal. On the whole we felt that two tour parties and a good number of
individual guests were coped with well. We heartily recommend Bar Millevoglie on Via Lusardi for lunch.

Room Tip: Lake view if upgraded or likely to be in room for long time during day.
