“Excellent place to stay”
Reviewed July 31, 2010

We were very happy with the Garni Corona, Paying a little extra for a room overlooking the lake is well worthwhile (and a five-day stay means you get a 5% discount). Firstclass breakfast, included in the room rate, friendly staff and an ideal location. Our room was large - fairly basic but everything you need is there - and we enjoyed sitting with a drink on our balcony and watching the passing parade and view across the lake. Perfectly located with restaurants, cafes, bars close by and the helpful Tourist Office (free internet access) next door. Well placed for using the lake ferries, and also for the bus to Como.

Well I can't praise this hotel and the family that run it enough. The hotels location is brilliant, the breakfast great, the rooms are very spacious and the staff are absolutely amazing. If you're going to menaggio don't be put off by the 2*. The family who run the hotel are so incredibly friendly and helpful that I have absolutely no qualms whatsoever recommending this hotel and would say to book a room with the lake and mountain views. It was extremely hot when we were there and, although there was no aircon in the rooms, they supplied a fan which did the job perfectly (and wasn't noisy so didn't disturb the sleep)
Menaggio is the ideal location to tour that part of Lake Como with Belaggio and varenna a short ferry trip away. Would definately recommend Chic & Freak for lunch abd there are some nice bars in the piazza in front of the hotel.

The view of Lake Como, the piazza and the promenade were just as we had hoped - lovely! Our room was lakefront with two french doors leading onto tiny balconies that you could step out onto, but were too small to sit on. That was ok since we could lie in the bed or put a chair in the doorway and enjoy the wonderful view...as well as the passing parade of people. The room was a good size, though a bit spartan. The family that runs the hotel was friendly and very helpful -we felt like guests in their home as they greeted us warmly as we passed through the small lobby. The breakfast is well stocked and seemed to suit all. We knew we were taking a risk on a hotel with no air conditioning, and, indeed, the week of our visit (end of June) was very warm (90's). There was a terrific, quiet pedestal fan in the room which definitely made things cooler, but with a restaurant on the first floor below and motorcycles/scooters zooming around, keeping the doors open to let in the breeze also meant a noisy room til about midnight. Just a tradeoff and something to consider if you book in the summer. For 100E/night this seemed like a very fair price compared to other hotels in the area - especially since we were out of the room more than in it! Recommended if you're looking for affordable and clean accommodations with friendly service and a gorgeous view. And don't miss the restaurant on the first floor (unrelated to the hotel) - wonderful!!

We have just returned from a week staying at this hotel in Mennagio, and I can't recommend it highly enough...even though as a location, we actually preferred Verenna, just across the lake!

The hotel is in a good position in the middle of Mennagio, but electonic metal blinds and double glazed windows ensure you wont be disturbed by the noise from the piazza outside (I am a light sleeper and I couldnt hear a thing) We paid for the room at the front of the hotel with the largest balcony, and were given a discount of 10euro/night because we were having a 7 night stay - this impressed us before we even arrived! The view from the balcony was beautiful, directly onto the mountains and lake.

What impressed me most about this hotel was the cleanliness, it was absolutely spotless wherever you looked. Our bed was turned down every day, and clean sheets provided twice during the week (in addition to the ones when we arrived). The communal areas (hall, dining room etc) were also exceptionally clean and tidy, and for what has been described as a "budget hotel" elsewhere on this site, I would argue that it has 5 star standards in cleanliness! LIttle touches, like the maid leaving us proper drinking glasses when she noticed a bottle of limoncello in our room were also much appreciated.

The service was very friendly without being intrusive, and the breakfast was delicious, with a wide selection of meats, cheeses, bread, yoghurt, fruit, cereal etc. We particularly liked the fact they serve from 8.00 until 10.15am, so no need to get up early on holiday, and that the coffee provided with breakfast was some of the best we had on our stay!

I really have nothing bad to say about this place, I only wish it was over the lake in Verenna instead!!

P.S - for food, try the Osteria il Pozzo, next door but one to the hotel, (near tourist information), absolutely incredible authentic Italian food, huge portions, wonderful service, and very reasonable prices; without question the best place we ate. It doesnt take bookings and it is justifably very popular, we found getting there a little later helped (8.30pm onwards, but officially last orders are around 9.00pm so dont leave it too long!) Also Gelateria Edo on the next piazza does the best chocolate ice-cream I have ever tasted in my life!

We have been to northern Italy's Lago di Como eight different times. Until last year we always stayed in in Bellagio. We really enjoyed our stays there. Last year and this year, however, we decided to get away from the nosier and much more hectic Bellagio and to find a location and hotel that would give us an entirely new and different angle to the beauty of the lake and surrounding mountains. With the help of Trip Advisor reviews we discovered the Hotel Garni Corona in Mennagio.

Still easily accessible by scheduled high speed and "center of the lake" boats and ferries we found and much enjoyed Mennagio's smaller, quieter and layed back location. Looking across the lake from our second floor room and balcony gave us an entirely new appreciation for Lake Como.

The hotel is family owned and operated and fronts on a small piazza just a stones throw from the water's edge. It's exceptionally clean and a great place just to make yourself feel at home.

We've been there twice in the last nine months are are already making plans to return.

We stayed at the Garni Corona for a week during our honeymoon. Booking was a straightforward process, a few emails and a bank deposit and when we had to amend our stay slightly because of the volcanic ash problems the owners were really accommodating. Menaggio is a great location. It's a good base on Lake Como and was really convenient for us having driven through France and Switzerland to get there! We used the ferry lots and went to Milan by train from Varenna which was really easy.
Menaggio is also a lovely small town. There were several good restaurants and places to have a drink. I'd recommend the walks from the town along the Sanagra river and also up to the Rifugio Menaggio for amazing views of both Lake Como and Lake Lugano (they also sell homemade cake up there).
The hotel is family run and super friendly and helpful. Rooms are on the basic side but are really clean and affordable for the area. We paid extra and had a balcony overlooking the lake which I'd recommend. Breakfast was a buffet, with cereals, eggs, breads, cheese etc, plus cappucinos, coffee, tea etc.

We (2 girlfriends) stayed 2 nights in this family run hotel on Lake Como. You can't beat the location, although in the high season it could be a bit noisy until fairly late in the evening. The room was spacious and the shower/wc was newly redone. Everything was spotless. We had a view of the lake, over the small piazza, for 100 euros. This included a good breakfast buffet. As we hit the beginning of the season, Menaggio was quiet and parking on the street was no problem. A garage was 2 blocks away where we could have parked for 12 euros a day. There are plenty of restaurants in town too and boat trips to other towns on the lake are within an easy walk.
p.s. We stayed a 3rd night at the Grand Hotel in Menaggio - hoping to have a little luxury. This was a disappointment - perhaps because the hotel had just opened for the season.
