“Noisy, terrible beds and rude staff”
Reviewed June 2, 2009

This family run hotel is close to some shops and eateries. Rooms largish with balconies. Beds were terrible and walls were paper thin so you heard everything from all rooms all floors! The shower was in the bath (no screen) and it was a hand held shower fixed in the bath. It was awkward to shower, water went everywhere as well as a HUGE SAFETY PROBLEM. I asked for another towel and was told by the rude male receptionist that I would have to pay for the additional laundry costs, so I said no thanks. We also asked for table water with our dinner and the rude man again we have to buy our water. The staff are not friendly or helpful one bit. The noise too much and the bathrooms dangerous.

What a wonderful little hotel. Stayed here with Cosmos tour Mar 09. Loved the view from our balcony and the orange and lemon grove next door. Even picked lemons from the balcony.
Meals were so so, evening meal included in the price of tour - was soup, meatballs and profiteroles - quite nice.
The village is small and easy to walk around and that little pastry shop near the hotel served delicious pastries. The earlier comment about the breakfast room not being open until the dot is true, most of our group were there early but we were not permitted to enter the room until 7.l5 am.

We were thrilled to get a room with a side sea view and a balcony with furniture - a real bonus as we were on a group tour of Italy and had mixed results so far. This hotel also has a pool (pool towels cost 1 euro each to hire) and lemon groves next door. It is situated in a small town some distance around the coast from Sorrento, so this needs to be borne in mind as the public transport isn't fantastic and the town is tiny with very little to do in the evening.

The food at the hotel was extremely average - how hard can it be to fix a continental breakfast? Also, the dining room doors were only opened on the dot. It was not possible to go in earlier before the crowds, which was a pain as everyone is then queuing at the same time.
Compared to some of the other hotels on this tour, this one was good.

Summary
The hotel is splendid.
We thoroughly enjoyed our short stay at the Central Park Hotel, part of a two centre package holiday arranged by Travelscope called 'A Taste of Italy'.

Accommodation
Our very large bedroom on the first floor had a very large balcony accessed through modern double patio doors, it had a sea view and overlooked the local church, an architectural delight, as most are in Italy. The patio doors also had electrically operated shutters which kept out any external sounds, very convenient. We also had a modern style king size bed, mattress a bit on the firm side but got used to it after the first night. A stylish larger than average en-suite with a large hand basin and large shower cubicle added to the level of comfort.

We did experience a problem with the bathroom door, it kept sticking on the floor; we reported the fault and the staff responded immediately; when we got back to the hotel later that day the door had been fixed, a perfect fit.

Restaurant
For breakfast you can expect a typical continental offering of bread, ham, cheese, hard boiled egg, fruit, pastries etc, tea & coffee and very tasty fruit drink, don't know what it was, but a delightful concoction. We chose not to use the hotel restaurant for our evening meal, we wanted to get out and about and explore what the local area had to offer. There are a small number of restaurants and cafe bars in the locality but we opted for a small pizzeria down a narrow street, here we enjoyed the tastiest (and very very reasonably priced) pizzas and pasta you could wish for! The proprietor even offered us free samples!! Step across the road from the hotel to a small cafe which sells various coffees eg espresso, cappuchino, etc and the tastiest pastries and cakes - you must try them!

To the earlier reviewer who had problems with paying by credit in the hotel - why didn't you go elsewhere after the first evening?

Facilities
There is a small pool situated to the rear which is great for relaxing and cooling off after a hot day sightseeing. Green carpeting around the pool makes it safe from slipping on wet surfaces. We didn't expect a pool so this was a treat.

Friendliness
I must also add how friendly the hotel staff were to us; all you have to do is make a little effort to say hello in the Italian language, it's not that difficult and the locals so appreciate it! Say "buongiorno" when you meet an Italian and he/she will immediately want to help you and maybe teach you some more Italian.

Conclusion
Perhaps not the most convenient if you want to spend a lot of time shopping in Sorrento, but Massa Lubrense is a lovely area with its own quaintness.

Overall I would say this is a great family run hotel; we would certainly return here.

  • Liked — King size bed and terrific balcony
  • Disliked — Leaving
  • Tips/Secrets — Try and say something Italian e.g. Buongiorno to greet an Italian, it helps

I just returned from Italy a week ago and felt compelled to warn fellow travellers of the rude and unaccomodating staff they will experience at the Hotel Central Park. As an example, we wanted to use our credit card to pay for a meal (33 Euros) and the snooty waiter stated that they would not accept ANY credit card charges of less than 50 Euros. This was toward the end of our month long tour and didn't have enough in cash...they refused to budge. The next evening we had wine with our dinner and got the total up to 44 Euros and they still wouldn't even work with us and were down right nasty! We wondered if we would be washing dishes in order to check out. The next morning when my mother approached the desk clerk, he shook his finger at her and stated, "I told you last night that we won't charge anything less than 50!" Mom, being much more calm than I, said, "Fine. We would like to buy three bottles of water." That brought our total to exactly 50 Euros. Boy, was the guy bummed!

My mother and I have travelled all over the world and this was the single worst experience we have ever had with hotel staff. I urge you to stay elsewhere or be prepared for a horrible experience!
