I had never stayed at a B&B before as I had a pre-conceived notion that hosted accommodation would bring with it an obligation to have uncomfortable conversations with other guests. This experience has completely converted me into a B&B afficiondo.
Giulio and Manuela were both lovely and unobtrusive hosts. Helpful and caring, both leading up to our stay (in terms of emails to sort out arrival times/greetings etc) and during our stay (with recommendations of what to do in Marsala and a great breakfast). We hardly saw the other guests, all of whom were on their own holiday timetables, but when we did everyone was friendly.
The villa was somewhat difficult to find even with our GPS as it took us up crazy one laned bi-directional streets and I ended up having to call Giulio for help. Turns out we were only 200m away at that stage and just had to drive further on the street we were on, looking for a big yellow wall/fence (we had driven past twice already but hadn't noticed any signage and couldn't make sense of the numbering). Once in the grounds the villa was beautiful. Renovated superbly. We had a twin share room on the ground floor (I think there may have been 4 floors in total) . Single beds were fine. Bathroom brilliant with the best shower I had in Sicily (roomy enough to dance in). The gardens were great and there was even a hammock strung up, if you wanted to stay and relax. Breakfast in the morning was tasty, fresh and had enough variety to please everyone.
Giulio was a useful tour guide. He suggested going to the salt pans and the island of maiola (?) as well as to a local trattoria for dinner. All these suggestions were great. We also visited the Florio winery on our way out of town and learned more about Marsala wine than I thought possible. A great place to stay with wonderful hosts - would definitely recommend it.
