“Quite decadent, staff lacks motivation”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 19, 2012 via mobile

Should have been a luxury hotel, but it's now in a state of decadence. Spacious rooms, with outdated furniture and mediocre bathrooms. Poor breakfast. Service is quite uninterested, reluctantly doing their job. Good for a stop at Marsala, not for a holiday trip

Great customer service here: warm, friendly and extremely helpful in terms of recommending where to go and what to do and what to eat! We went to ALL the restaurants they recommended and the food was just amazing!!! Great price as well!!!

The hotel is lovely itself, especially the swimming pool and outdoor area!!! However, there were no bathrobes nor slippers for a 5 star hotel...The room was spacious but a bit plain.

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 6, 2012 via mobile

We stayed at this hotel for 7 nights at the end of April start of May.

The hotel itself is a grand old place. It is decorated beautifully and set in a small but attractive garden.

The staff are fantastic. Very warm and welcoming, nothing is too much trouble.

In terms of facilities, the hotel lacks a gym/steam room/sauna etc but has a beautiful pool area (towels for the pool are provided by the hotel). The dining room is decorated very nicely and provides a lovely setting for breakfast which is served until 10:30. The rooms are comfortable and carry the usual amenities, however there are no bathtubs and the mini-bar is expensive (€6 for a litre of water).

People have already commented on the breakfast. The vast array of cakes is impressive, but obviously not to everyone's taste. You can ask for eggs which they will prepare fresh for you there is also cereal fresh meats/cheese, breads, jams and juice. The coffee is all made freshly and is excellent.

The location of the hotel isn't ideal but you can walk to Marsala centre quite easily. Reception will guide you to the town which is around 1k away, they will also provide a map.   Be aware that Italian opening hours are slightly different to those we have in the UK. Typically shops open at around 10 then close again at 1. They then re-open at around 4-4:30 until 8. This includes local supermarkets, bars and nearly everything else.

For those who like to laze by the pool and nip out for food drink at lunch there is a small cafe if you exit the hotel and turn right (open all day). You can't miss it as it is just on the main road. However if you go a little further past the first cafè and then past a distillery and take the road on your right (Via Fillipo Noto) there is a more flashy (but reasonably priced) cafe/bar which does great food. The name of it is Juparana.

For cheap(ish) bottled water and beer head out of the hotel and turn left. You will come to a small petrol station which has a vending machine selling snacks and water.  Just beyond this you will find a cafè selling beer (which you can take away) snacks/coffee etc. Almost directly opposite this cafe is the entrance to a local Marsala winery which is worth visiting (€10 pays for a tour and tasting).

Marsala doesn't offer a huge amount of activity. So if you are going for a week you might consider a trip to Trapani or Palermo (the train station  is close the hotel and reception will provide timetables) or a trip to some of the local islands. That said if your plan is to relax by the pool for a week you won't need to very far at all.

The public areas are spacious and impressive, the beds were very comfortable and our room was fine.  We enjoyed the breakfast, although finding that the cakes taste as good as they look was not good for our waistlines!  The pool area is lovely to sit in and relax, watching swallows swooping over the water.  The reception staff were friendly and helpful.

It would be a superb 3 star or decent 4 star hotel but there are many details of service and facilities that prevent it hitting luxury status.  We were in a standard room, overlooking the railway and a main road and there was no double glazing, so the traffic noise was noticeable.  The toiletries were minimal and one day when we left late morning the room was not made up. At breakfast the staff were more concerned with setting tables than checking that guests had tea and coffee, and when juice, milk or buffet items ran out they were not replaced.   If you wanted drinks or food in the pool area it had to be ordered before mid day.  While none of these things spoiled our stay it is not what we had expected when booking a 5 star hotel as a treat.  Most would be easy and not expensive to rectify, yet would make a lot of difference.

As other people have mentioned, the presence of the dour older man in reception was peculiar.  He ignored all greetings and was sometimes accompanied by an equally grumpy younger man.  Everyone else we met during our stay in Marsala was courteous and gracious - including the fishermen in the market - which made this odd couple even more of an anomaly!

Room Tip: For quiet rooms I suspect you need to go for the more expensive ones

What a most charming and exquisite hotel, the wonderful antiques, marble floors, original and beautiful art all were so pleasing; however, they were completely overshadowed by the most impecable, professional, helpful and charming staff. One always felt so appreciated and cared for. The level of service provided was top notch. The breakfast buffet was elegant and so very, very delicious. All being said, I had to make myself leave the premises to continue my vacation. The rooms are large and extremely comfortable and as quiet as the inside of the Vatican in the middle of the night. This is the place to stay.

Room Tip: There is not a bad room in the place; however I would suggest a room above the first floor, facing t...

We went in February with friends and had a lovely stay. The staff were great - recommending restaurants and places to visit and went out of their way to help us, printing off maps and so on.

The hotel has a relaxed atmosphere and despite being adjacent to a railway is very quiet - the double glazing works fine and we did not hear trains even though our room was on that side of the hotel. The breakfast is fine - cheeses, cold meats, bread, fruit and lots of cake. We ate out so I can't comment on the restaurant at the hotel.

The hotel is decorated with traditional gilt, oil paintings and heavy curtains. Rooms were clean and the beds comfortable and Marsala is a pretty good location to travel around and sightsee - we hired a car at the airport which was not expensive.

I will definately be going back to Sicily ... I want to see more of the island. If I go back to Marsala I would be more than happy to stay in the New Palace again.

The public rooms are very gorgeous, lots of shiny marble and gilt, bedrooms very spacious and comfortable and clean. The pool looked so wonderful I was tempted to go in it even though it was February and pretty cold, but we contented ourselves with faking some swimsuit shots. The staff were extremely kind and helpful and full of good ideas about things to do. Marsala itself is kind of a two day town and we were there for five days, so I'd plan differently if I were to go again. I see there have been some harsh comments about breakfast - personally I absolutely loved all the cakes, they were unspeakably delicious, however I did put on about six pounds! To be fair there were alternatives (fruit, ham, cheese, bread, cereals, etc) but they required discipline. The location was quiet, overlooking the sea, a bit of a walk into the city but taxis plentiful and cheap, one good restaurant close by.
