We stayed at the Delfino Beach Hotel for 5 nights at the end of May beginning June. The hotel is located around 4-5km from the centre of Marsala so you are not able to walk into town as there are no pavements and the drivers in Sicily are crazy. We had a car so were able to get into town and do the sights ourselves. There is very little or no activity around the resort for shops or eating places. We were bed and breakfast so found ourselves a supermarket and got some food, beer and wine. Breakfast was pretty basic, ham, eggs, yoghurt, cakes and sweet croissants. We were so bored and unimpressed that we only ate there twice. Also the tables are not cleared very quickly and as there was an influx of people on the Fri / Sat the staff could not cope and food and crockery were left on tables for a long time.

We ate dinner at the Delfino Beach Restaurant on two occasions. The food was nice but not much choice. Ended up having pizza both nights. The house red wine though was drinkable and cheap 6 euros.

We arrived on a Thu and the resort was dead. No one by the pool, no pool bar and the hotel bar didn't open until 4.00 pm. On Fri though there was an influx of people and all of a sudden there was games, loud music and lots of activity. By Sun it had all gone quiet again. No pool bar though and not sure if this because wasn't in season. And we all know when you on holiday all you sometimes want is a cocktail.

The room was spacious and clean and comfortable beds but a bit dark and old fashioned. TV but no remote so we don't even know if it worked. The shower leaked somewhere so every time we had a shower the floor got flooded. Also our room was above what sounded like some sort of generator and I found it very difficult to sleep. Avoid room 267. You can also hear everything from the corridors and the reception area.

Some of the staff didn't speak very much English, particularly bar and pool lifeguard so it was a little difficult sometimes.

The pool was nice but freezing cold. Also be warned that you have to wear a bathing cap to swim in the pool. We did not know this and when my husband got in the pool, the lifeguard was very anxious to get him out of there. There was a language barrier but my husband eventually understood and didn't go in the pool again. I got the impression that you could get the caps from the hotel - though not sure if you had to pay or not.

The beach was very busy but we did go there on a Sat. To use the Deflino Beach area and sunbeds with umbrella you have to pay 10 euros which I think is a bit of a cheek considering you are staying in the hotel and have supposedly paid for 4 star service. There was a lot of waste on the beach. I'm afraid the Italians don't seem to want to bother taking home their rubbish and just dump it.

We ate other nights in Marsala though wandered around quite a bit. Menus are mostly the same, pasta, pizza, seafood, meat. We did however enjoy the delicious Italian icecream every day. I would recommend the pistaschio. One night we ate in the pizza place a little up on the road from the resort but it wasn't that great so would avoid.

On our last day which was a Mon we were quietly lazing by the pool when there must have been about 40 kids invade the pool. It was quite amusing to watch the lifeguards chasing the boys around the pool as some of them didn't have caps on. They were there for about 2 hours and it was very noisy. I believe this hotel does the schoolchildren thing quite a lot.

All in all the resort was ok but I would not consider it a 4 star and don't think I would stay there again.

The hotel seems to be neglected, we have been in a first room in the dependance, extremely noisy because of bad isolation we could hear all our neighbours were saying and doing, first they refused to change us rooms, then we got another one because they could not fix an issue on the roof causing noise with the wind at night. A lot of stuff was not working in the 2nd room. The service is poor as well as the quality.

My wife and I have just returned from a week at the Delfino Beach Resort in Marsala. Though, overall, we had an enjoyable time, there are certainly some things to be aware of if you are planning on booking a holiday at Delfino.

Location: As has been mentioned in other reviews, this resort is very isolated. Located around 4-5km from the centre of Marsala, one is unable to access the city on foot. There is precious little/no activity around the resort itself by way of shops or places to buy food. As we were on the half board deal, this resulted in us surviving between breakfast (7.30-9.30) and dinner (8-10.30ish) on snacks from the vending machine for lunch (for which reception doesn't provide change). We did get a taxi to Marsala on one day and bought food from a supermarket to tide us over, though this wasn't ideal either. While this didn't make for a bad holiday, it is something one should be aware of.

Beach: At the time of our visit, the beach was in no fit state to spend time on. By the end of our stay, action had been taken to clean/prepare the beach for 'season', though it remained unspectacular at best. The resort itself seems to own a stretch of a few hundred metres, though either side of this the beach remained littered with waste.

Room: Spacious and clean with comfortable beds. TV provided but no English speaking channels (which we didn't really expect, though there was mention of 'cable tv' in some literature we read, so one might have easily been misled.

Restaurant: Half-board customers have to pay for all drinks with dinner in the restaurant. Though we assumed we would have to (and thus budgeted accordingly), it was never specified to us and we never had to sign anything after each meal to confirm what we had drank, leading us to wonder whether they were included. It's simply worth being aware that they are not. The food itself was decent though, again, unspectacular. You are given a set menu from which to choose two dishes. However, the menu is very similar every night, populated (almost exclusively) with seafood dishes which seem cheap and easy to make in bulk (risotto, pasta, etc). There is the option to order pizza (which is included for half-board customers), though we were never specifically made aware of this and only found out after over-hearing another table enquire whether this would be possible. Again, it's something to be aware of in advance because many people would go through the holiday without knowing.

Pool: The pool area is clean with plenty of sunbeds available (though we were attending out-of-season).

Customer Service: The staff were something of a mixed bag. Some were polite and helpful while others barely seemed to register your presence. As we stayed 'out-of-season', the hotel seemed to be operating on a skeleton staff. The pool bar was never open. The bar inside the main building rarely had anyone serving drinks and was open more than it was shut. Anytime we went to reception to ask for a drink, the staff seemed put-out at the request. I would expect this to be different during peak season, though as the hotel was open to paying customers, one has every right to expect a better quality of service.

My wife and I booked this holiday hoping for an opportunity to relax by the ppl/beach and have a read. As a result of these limited expectations/demands, we still had an enjoyable experience. However, having read some poor reviews prior to our departure, we also went prepared for the hotel to be flawed in a number of way. It most certainly doesn't present as a four-star accomodation (perhaps when it first opened, it might have been). If we hadn't read these reviews, we would have been a lot more disappointed. As such, I thought I'd return the favour for anyone else planning to head out to Delfino Beach.

Room Tip: We stayed in the main building with a front view which was pleasant.

We recently got a last minute deal for a week at Delfino 'Beach' Resort and were extremely disappointed to find that the beach was totally unusable when we arrived in Marsala. We didn't expect much for our money, but the coastline was an absolutely mess - covered with debris, seawed, rubbish and glass. The hotel itself was clean and friendly, and the pool was fine - but there was absolutely nothing to see or do within walking distance of the resort. We had a half board deal, and had hoped to be able to buy lunch at a local shop, bar or restaurant, but everything was totally closed up - it is a really isolated stretch of road. The brave could walk about 2m into Marsala, but with no pavements and Sicilian road safety - you take your chances! We hired a car to escape and sightsee everyday and did find some lovely scenery and beaches elsewhere, but I certainly wouldn't recommend Delfino for anyone seeking a pretty Sicilian break. The hotel food was actually pretty good, so no complaints there - but there were about 300 teenagers also staying at the hotel as part of a school trip, which didn't make it very restful! Do your homework before booking.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the actual hotel, not in the annexe blocks

Delfino beach is situated 6km from the nearest town of Marsala. When booking this we didn't think this would be a problem as we wanted a relaxing holiday by the pool or on the beach. However the hotel's beach was an absolute disgrace, covered with broken sun loungers, chairs and rubbish. The pool area was not much better. The bar was not open, there was no sign of fitness facilities (except for 3 bikes) and the tennis court looked like it hadn't been used in years. When we confronted the hotel staff about this, we were told that it was out of season and they don't start cleaning the beach until mid June. Funny considering they call themselves the Delfino 'BEACH' hotel. I don't know whent he pictures on their website were taken but it certainly wasn't within the last 10 years.

The bus they clain to provide into town was also not running. Instead we had to pay 10 euros for every journey into town and 10 euros back. When we tried to cut down the cost of the journey by sharing taxis, they charged us three times as much saying that they charge per person rather than per journey. We ended up paying 140 euros just on taxis on this holiday trying to escape the poor facilities of the hotel, which would have been better spent on an alternative hotel. The hotel said we should have hired a car but having not driven a car in the past 5 years, the hotel should not use this as an excuse for not providing a decent environment for their guests. Also another couple staying at the hotel had an accident on their first day in a hire car and so it didn't give you much confidence. The hotel should have provided the transport they clain to provide on thier website or at least been of more assistance in helping. We felt trapped. We asked for bus times on 2 days of the holiday from Marsala to some nearby islands. On one day they said they couldn't help and on the second they gve us cmpletely the wrong information.

The food was ok. We stayed half board at the hotel and as there was nowhere nearby to the hotel to buy food and Marsala closes between 1 and 4.30 every day including most of the restaurants, this was all we ate for the whole holiday. There was a shop next to the hotel that was empty and never opened (obviously because it was out of season) and a beach bar down the road that was always full of smokers and very unpleasant. For evening meal, we had the choice of 3 starters (risotto and pasta) and 3 mains (almost all fish). If you didn't want fish, you could have a pizza. For the first couple of days, I was quite impressed with the standard of evening meals though as time went on and the more times risotto was repeated, I decided to stick with the 5euro pizzas. The range of desserts kept diminishing every night including all of the fresh fruit. By the end of the week, I couldn't wait to get back to England and eat fresh fruit and veg and a diet drink (both of the latter did not exist).

All in all, this was probably the worst holiday I have ever been on, to the worst hotel and in an area of Sicily that hadn't see a tourist in the last 30 years. The town also provides nothing for tourists other than the Florio wine tour that I would highly recommend. There is no way this is a four star hotel especially as the hotel had school trips staying there every night of the week, making noise till all hours in the morning and having disco's downstairs. The hotel is in dire need of a makeover and need a wake up call to realise that as long as there are paying guests expecting good service, facilites and a relaxing holiday there should be no 'out of season'.

Room Tip: The rooms with balconies are smaller and do not have a bath. Although our room didn't have a bal...

Delfino Beach is located south of Marsala and a little difficult to find. However it has a nice location, it has a nice entrance and look and the rooms as well as the bathroom are spacy and nice. The hotel has the breakfast area (huge!) in the hotel building, but the restaurants as well as some other building are off-site near the beach. Restaurant serves typical Sicilian dishes.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the main building with balcony (nice view).
