Owner description: 30 km from Trapani, looking out towards the sea of Marsala, the Florio Wine Cellars fascinate visitors from all over the world with the beauty and tranquillity that reigns between their ancient naves, where Florio’s wines mature in silence. Built in volcanic tuff stone by Vincenzo Florio in 1833, the Florio Cellars invites the visitor to explore its extraordinary atmosphere, here history, architecture, modernity and design blend to offer a journey in an exclusive and astonishing world that thrills even the most expert wine-tourist. A new way of conceiving the wine cellars’ functions also means that this is no longer only the birthplace of unique wines like Florio’s Marsalas, Passitos and Liqueurs, but also welcomes visitors to conferences, exhibitions and tasting events. The magnificent barrel chambers, the two innovative Experiential Tasting Rooms, the spectacular Terrazza Florio and the elegant Wine Shop are all waiting for you, to offer you an unforgettably experience...

Our group was totally underwhelmed by this overhyped tour. They started selling tickets (10 euros per adult and some discussion over the cost for children) right at the start time of the tour so it began late. They broke the group up into English and Italian groups and while the cellar is beautiful and some of the information imparted was interesting, most of it focussed on how great their wine was. The tasting room is impressive, but having to wait 5 minutes for the Italian group to join us and being sternly told we could not start the tasting until the Italian actress in the movie told us how to do it - all while the music was so loud we could barely think let alone speak. And the movie was really an infomercial for their wine. We escaped before being filed Disney style into the store. Would not do this again.

This is an historic Marsala Producer, located on the edge of town, with plenty of parking. It is an easy winery to visit.

This brand has survived good times and bad, world wars, exceptional as well as poor management, to become one of the premier Marsala producers. The tour, which costs 10 Euro, is well worth the money, because as others have said, it is educational and interesting.

The wine/food pairing was eye opening.

Beware of the “Napa style” Enoteca – lots of tempting wines at prices lower than you will find in the US.

Cantine Florio are situated further up the road, in a corner site, a couple of hundred metres from where actually marked on Google Maps. Opposite there is a very suitable parking. If Marsala is all about wine, then Cantine Florio take this to the highest level. We attended a show on the traditions of barrel making and for €5, tasted different wines, along with some nibbles. The place houses a beautifully displayed shop and next to it an awesome cellar with thousands of wine barrels of all sizes. Some barrels were dated early 1900's.

I'm not the vinophile in our group, but sometimes you have to give a little when you travel in a group.

This is one time I'm glad I gave in. We did a wine tour of Napa Valley last year, and Florio's rates right up there with Napa's best. The tour was informative, the warehouse enormous, the tasting room illuminating and the brand new store at the end of the tour was state of the art.

The tasting paired 3 excellent aged Marsala wines with Parmesan cheese, blue cheese and chocolate.

Well worth the 10 Euro entrance fee, although you will spend more in the wine store on the way out.

By the way, those large casks in the warehouse are worth $36,000 each.

Don't miss this tour! The winery is beautifully presented and the wine itself wonderful. There is a museum of antique wine making implements and vineyard equipment. The tasting room had a great atmosphere and the wines were accompanied with the appropriate pairings. The wine shop was exceptional--one of the best we've seen, and we live in the wine growing region of Sonoma-Napa California. Our tour was in English and our tour guide informative and fun. We purchased 4 bottles (drank one, so only 3 made it home).
