Our host was most helpful, charming and quie personable. The wine was very good and the food was as well. Our host and his sister (marketing and public relations respectively) returned to the table several times to ensure our food and wine was all in order. We started with menus and then somehow ended up with the un priced 'fresh sheet' which was excellent. We found our meal a little pricey in the end but still reasonable value.

The owner of this restaurant couldn't have been more helpful : he drove down and collected us from the hotel, which was in the next village! Everything was grown locally, from the pigs, chickens, eggs and goats, to the cheeses, herbs, wines and liqueurs. The restaurant is like an extension of his house, and his family were there in the kitchen. Amazing food, amazing location : highly recommend!

Worth every penny and the drive up there. Everything was home-made from the cheese, to the prociutto, to pasta itself. Parking was in the back and after being greeted by Nonno at the door, was served and explained the specialties of the day by Antonio. Great family business with everyone involved. Southern Italian nonna cooking at its best with great Aglianico wine. Finished off with homemade digestivi that the daughter made (we also bought a beautiful bottle of finocchietto as a gift) ! Finally, capped it with political chit chat with Antonio as it was Election Day - how more familial can it get ;) wonderful place and people and highly recommended!

i took 27 Australians here for lunch, the best booking i made. everything was made by the family some of the best pancetta i have ever eaten and the ricotta that was made 2 hours before we got there was something none of my party had experienced before. The pasta with porcinci mushrooms was to die for this is good honest food cooked with love from produce grown by the family. there was so much food but we could not stop eating it was that good. Thank you for a wonderful day it was like having lunch at Nonnas!

As visitors to nearby Maratea, we decided at the last minute to search out Il Giardino di Epicurio, run by the Bocchiglione family,in the village of Massa, a scenic 5-minute drive up the hill from the central piazza in Maratea. There was not a taxi to be found, so we called the restaurant, and, given a somewhat slow evening, a friend of the family offered to stop by our hotel and drive us to the restaurant. The small country house, on the border of two Italian provinces, had been serving the finest Basilicatan and Calabrian fare in this location for years. Osterie di Italia, Gambero Rosso's culinary guide, awarded the restaurant its coveted "Slow Food snail", praising the traditional cuisine. As with any restaurant meeting this criteria, it's always best to let the owners select from the best of their menu and our owner-selected menu at Il Giardino di Epicurio lived up to expectations, starting with a special plate of three different pastas, hand made and flavored with mushroom, chingiale and white pumpkin. While we sat next to a portrait of Epicurius, himself, our host, the son of the family, who was wearing the spinal collar occasioned by a recent bad motorcycle accident, didn't let the impediment slow his service or recommendations of some of his favorite local wines. By the end of the evening, we felt like we'd been treated to a fine meal of farmer's market ingredients in a friend's home. What could be better?
