“A beautiful spot on Lake Garda”
Reviewed April 20, 2009

We felt fortunate to get a last minute reservation for one night on Easter weekend. It was a spur of the moment decision to drive up to Bessanone from Vicenza and stop in Malcesine overnight. Although our room didn't have a view of the lake, or a balcony because the hotel was otherwise full, the location right on the lake more than made up for it as we enjoyed our Campari spritzers on the terrace alongside the promenade. We took advantage of the half board evening meal for 12 euro per person. Next morning we enjoyed the 15 minute walk up the promenade into the quiet town of Malcesine before returning after an hour's walk for the included breakfast which offered a number of self-service items as well as omlettes made to order for an additional charge. Then it was off to look for wineries, and olive oil producers.

Fabulous location at the side of Lake Garda. Stayed bed and breakfast only. Breakfast excellent lots of choice, fresh fruit, pastries, meat, cheese, etc. Many restaurants in the town 20 minutes walk along the side of the lake. Hotel staff very friendly and helpful. Room clean and well furnished. A week passed too quickly.

Stayed at the Du Lac earlier this year on honeymoon.

It is really in a great location - as everyone says a lovely 15 minute stroll into the wonderful location that is Malcesine. Malcesine is mindblowingly beautiful and just jam packed with little cobbled streets full of shops and wonderful restaurants.

We had a suite room at the front on the first floor - it was fine but so modern it was almost clinical - and quite "bare". The views as everyone says are amazing - however be very careful if you choose these rooms - although you have a lovely terrace with beds and table/chairs - it takes a bit of getting used to as the terrace is not completely separated from your next door neighbours - OK after a while, but slightly strange initially.

Definitely do the cable car to the top of the mountain - worth every penny with mindblowing views. Also, the trip across to Limone is very pleasant, and the trip into Verona for the day was fab.

The Manager - !!! He was very rude - when we arrived he dumped us in our room barely managing to speak to us and did not bother to smile, welcome us, or mention anything about the hotel etc - therefore the first evening we went down for food we were refused as we had not pre-ordered.....ridiculous. He was generally miserable throughout the stay but I would not not let this put you off staying at the hotel - but if you need any assistance etc just ask one of the girls or waitresses. Also - ensure you check what times you can check-out/pay when you leave. There is a small sign at reception saying all bills need to be paid (in cash) at certain times - so if you have an early flight and are leaving the hotel before 7.30 am there will be no-one there to help you - we eventually managed to get hold of Mr Happy who came to help us on our last day - and then proceeded to give us a row, shouting at us in the reception for getting him out of bed and not reading his notice!!! Very rude, angry little man who spoils things for such a lovely hotel.

I have just returned from a 3 night stay with my American penfriend. After spending 3 nights in Venice in an overpriced and gloomy hotel, I was delighted to arrive at Hotel du Lac, which cost half the price of the Venice hotel.
We stayed in a huge, light and well furnished room with a delighful terrace with sunbeds, table and chairs and stunning views, and received a lovely warm welcome from the family who run the hotel.
The breakfasts were good (apart from the coffee, which was from a machine) and I felt the evening meals were excellent for the price, and we were delighted with our choices.
My only issue was that the dining room lacks ambience as it is very brightly lit, but it does overlook the lake and in summer it would be lovely to sit outside on the terrace.

  • Liked — Large terrace with beatuful views
  • Disliked — Lack of ambience in the dining room

I have just returned from the Hotel du Lac. As a single traveller I like to have a little luxury on holiday.
The hotel rooms were not luxurious but clean and comfortable - as in most hotels the single room was rather small, but I did have a balcony.
The views of the lake and Malcesine town from the hotel terrace were beautiful and made the walk into town worthwhile.
The breakfasts were excellent with a good choice of fruit, breads, juices and beverages.
BUT the evening meal was appalling. For a start, in a 4* hotel I do not expect to have to preorder my meal the night before. Then when it did arrive I found it inedible. Breaded fillet of plaice was a plaice-shaped fish finger full of mush which bore no resemblance to any fish I have ever known, likewise the breaded chicken. As for the crab legs served as an appetiser one evening - words fail me. I can only assume that most of the food was brought in ready made.
I can only say that after 3 nights I decided to eat elsewhere.
Definitely not 4* on food.

We stayed in a superior double room, booked with the hotel direct. The view of the Lake and Malcesine from the balcony was lovely, and the room was spacious (even with a cot in it) and modern. The bathroom was clean (only a shower though, no bath. Not normally an issue but our two year old has only ever had a bath so it took him a few days to accept the shower!). Lovely 10-15 minute walk into the town along the lakeside. We booked bed and breakfast, the breakfast buffet was huge with plenty of fresh fruit, cereals, yogurt, cheese, ham, boiled eggs and cakes & pastries. We only ate in the hotel for one evening meal, the salad buffet, pasta and dessert courses were nice but the main course was lukewarm and not very tasty. However, the dining room was busy each evening and we only have that one meal to base our opinion on.
Our fellow guests were mainly German, older couples. There were only two other children in the hotel when we stayed, but we were made to feel very welcome and the staff were lovely to our son.
Tips for guests with small children - the hotel charges (2008 price) 16 euros a night for children under 3 and provides a cot for them. We actually took a blow-up bed for our son as he'll be 3 soon and hasn't slept in a cot for nearly a year so we were not sure if the cot would be big enough or if he'd sleep in it. As it turned out it was a travel cot, but it had a proper mattress in it and was plenty big enough for our son (who is tall for his age). We told him it was his special holiday bed and he slept in it fine so the blow-up bed was not unpacked! Also, if you walk 2 minutes further past the hotel along the lake side (away from the town) there is a nice cafe, a restaurant and a playground.
All the staff at the hotel were very helpful and friendly. We'd definitely go back.

The Du Lac is an excellent hotel which provides the service, cleanliness and location that makes the difference on a holiday.
Make sure you take a lakeside view it's worth the extra money.
Ideally situated just outside the town it is a short promenade walk into the town yet far enough away for peace and quiet.
My only slight complaint is with the food, it could be a little more exciting. However we did take the fixed menu rather than the a la carte. It is a slight complaint and would not stop me going back to what is an excellent hotel.
