Hotel Modena
Ranked #48 of 71 Hotels in Malcesine
Reviewed July 19, 2012

The Modena is in a very central position, rooms are kept very clean, bedding and towels changed every few days and the breakfast and evening meals were good and the two Romanian ladies who serve in the dining room are lovely. It is a 2 star hotel, good value for money, don't expect 4 star and you won't be disappointed. There is a high turnover of guests who stay for a few nights for weddings/cycle/walking breaks but also those who are there for their main holiday of the year, most of whom book through the tour operator Inghams and therein lies the problem with this hotel. If you are an Inghams guest, the owner, Gino, can't stand you and will make this perfectly clear when you check in. You won't experience the 'dry' sense of humour he bestows on other guests, (he has more faces than the town hall clock) only his distain that you have had the cheek to stay there and after that we will do his best to ignore you or be as unhelpful as possible. Spend your money in another Malcesine hotel - Gino doesn't deserve it.

Room Tip: Service rating is for ladies in dining room. Rooms at back are quieter but as you need windows open...

Hotel Modena was a very comfortable hotel in a perfect location, in the centre of Malcesine. Gino and his staff were very welcoming and helpful, without being intrusive, and did their best to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. The rooms were large and airy, with fans to keep the rooms pleasant even in July. Everything was very clean and well presented. We were particularly impressed with the wide range of choices at breakfast.
We would definitely recommend this hotel to others and would love to go back ourselves!

This hotel is very central and is great value for money. The rooms are quite basic and we found it quite noisy at night (due to the location). There was no AC so it was quite hot. The staff were friendly and rooms were clean.

We stayed at the Hotel Modena on our recent visit to Malcesine.
Having visited last year and stayed in a slightly less central hotel it was great to be in such a central location literally on the door step of the castle, and for the money we paid we really thought it was good value.
My only complaints really are that the room we had (203) was very dark, mushy pea coloured walls and dim lighting, the tiled bathroom was well lit but for the duration of our stay had a rather unpleasant sewage smell but seemed spotlessly clean.
Our rooms were made up every morning and the bins emptied.
There is no aircon in the room, and since we were staying in malcesine during an apparent heat wave we were a little uncomfortable. You can open the windows and wooden shutters but due to being in such a central location its very noisy until late at night and then from about 7am onwards. The windows did shut out a lot of the noise but it was too warm to keep them shut - having said that the owner was kind enough to loan us a stand up fan for the duration of our stay as well as allowing us to use his car parking pass to park our hire car for free saving us about 30 euros :-)

The breakfast was adequate - cereals, fruit, toast, boiled eggs, meats and cheeses with a selection of juices and tea and coffee.

If you dont mind the noise and the lack of air con then the Hotel Modena is a great little place for the money, however could be made a lot more attractive with a lick of paint round the place.

The Hotel Modena is great value for money . Only problem we had was it was noisy at night , this was due to the age and type of property the hotel is. The room we had was over the kitchen and the staff seemed to be in there banging about until 1pm in the morning then starting again at 6pm. other guests in higher rooms were not bothered by this problem. My tip is have a high room.
However if I stayed on Lake Garda again I would perhaps stay here. We were on B&B only but ate at the hotel a coulpe of times in the evening. Small meals but value for money if you are not a hearty eater. Breakfast very good - self serve with god choices.

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights for a family wedding. The hotel is perfectly located in the centre of Malcesine. Gino is a wonderful host who genuinely cares for his guests and has a wonderful dry sense of humour. The rooms are quite basic but more than adequate and the hospitality more than makes up for it.

We wished we could have stayed longer and will be back!

The hotel is in a fantastic location just moments from the harbour and located on a lovely street in the heart of things. It's a basic hotel, so don't expect luxury, but it was clean, comfortable and great value. The staff are friendly and welcoming and Gino is a good host. He has a dry sense of humour that some other reviewers don't seem to appreciate but my husband and I found him to be charming and welcoming. I would recommend this hotel to others. If you have more money to splurge or want more luxury, then you should look elsewhere, but if you want a good value budget hotel in the centre of the action then this is a good place. Other reviewers have commented on the lac of air conditioning. This may be an issue for some people, during the hotter months, especially if you want to go to bed earlier or are a light sleeper (there are some bars nearby that might be noisy). However, this won't be a problem, if you want to enjoy the nightlife and the obvious benefits of this great location.
