very arrogant owner. when I went to the bar in shorts to get a bottle of wine for my room, the owner shouted at me, in front of all people, "that I cannot walk around like that in his hotel". Excuse me, shorts are not ok in a leisure hotel by the water?? An even if, this public display of headmaster attitude by the owner was totally misguided and inappropriate. Obviously, he does not respect the paying customer. Therefore, I cannot recommend this hotel if you care about a relaxed, friendly environment.

Just returned from a wonderful holiday at the Hotel Maximilian Malcesine. The hotel is situated on the Val de Sogno - a bay about 2km from Malcesine. We had a huge room with lake views opening onto a grassy area where there were plenty of sunbeds. The hotel was lovely with 2 swimming pools, one outdoor the other inside. The staff were really friendly and helpful. The food was great - a buffet breakfast with plenty of breads, cold meats, cheese, cereals, pastries and fruit. Who wants a full English when in Italy! Dinner was a 4 course affair at night. We had to make our choices at breakfast though if you refused I don't think there was a problem. The place had a wonderful feeling of peace and tranquility. The 2 km walk into town was along a promenade by the lake - lovely views. Could be a problem for older people especially when the weather is really hot. A tourist bus ran regularily into town for those not wanting to walk. Only downside for us was the cost of the wine at dinner which was really expensive. Have a drink on your terrace before dinner with wine from the supermarket! Would also have liked a kettle in room for my early morning cuppa - expected there to have been one in hotel of this standard. Would have taken our travel kettle if I'd known. Otherwise fantastic place to stay in a beautiful setting with plenty to do in surrounding area. Oh and use of bikes for free from the hotel!

Good points: Quiet location, beautiful view. Nice lakeside walk to Malcesine. Friendly receptionists.
Bad points: Overpriced wine, maid service.

Overall enjoyable stay. Food is very good but can get a bit too much over 7 days. Waiter service good.

Tip: Avoid buying the overpriced wine at the hotel and buy it for a quarter of the price in Malcesine at a friendly little wine shop called Vino Enoteca (on the main avenue as you walk into Malcesine) and enjoy it on your balcony!

This hotel was fantastic, the room was huge with stunning views of the lake, extremely clean, the other rooms we got to see of family staying with us were amazing also!

The food was out of this world, yes we did have to choose our meals at breakfast but we enjoyed knowing what was coming to us at the end of the day! Breakfast was plentiful, continental meats, breads, cereals etc... more than enough choice to fill you up for the day.
The restaurant and bar staff were exceptional, as we were travelling with our little boy who is just coming into his terrible 2's, the restaurant staff made extra special effort to keep him entertained, especially Benjamin!! ( thank you!! )
As we were there to be married, we had alot of family coming and going throughout our stay which the reception had no issue with at all. If you are thinking about getting married in Malcesine I can highly recommed this hotel, the walk way into the main town is so beautiful!
Overall we had a more than exceptional stay in the Maximilian and feel we have been spoilt for picking out future holidays!

Clean room, but air conditioning not working, despite complaing each day.
Poor choice of buffet breakfast with rubbery scrambled eggs as the only hot choice.
Expected to make your choice for the evening meal during the breakfast with no option to change later in the day.
Staff drinking party going on until the early hours of the morning on the balcony next to our room.
