Hotel Excelsior Bay
Ranked #41 of 71 Hotels in Malcesine
Certificate of Excellence

When considering this hotel, BEWARE! The management have no integrity or priciples when it comes to honouring your booking.Overbooking is obviously the norm and they will unceremoniously let you down at the last moment.
In May 2012 my wife and myself booked a week through Thomas Cook at the Excelsior Bay for our Golden Wedding celebration on the 15th September which we paid for in full in May.
Seven days before departure in September we were informed that the hotel was overbooked and were given an alternativehotel in a completely different resort on Lake Garda. This was not suitable and was not what we had booked anyway. As a result we had no option but to ask for a refund and because of the indifference of the Excelsior we have been nowhere.
This was a Golden Wedding celebration, obviously a bit special but now in `tatters`thanks to
the Excelsior. Pitty we never made it as comments from customers who`s bookings were honoured appear to be good.
BEWARE!

The hotel is located 10 minutes walk away from Malcesine centre, which gives it a nice, peaceful ambience on an evening.

The hotel is fronted onto the lake, which means sitting on the veranda, with a Spritz, and watching the Sun set, is one of the amazing sights I've seen.

All the staff are friendly, Marcello looks after everyone well. Making sure drinks are distributed speedily. Tables are located for evening meals, with a designated waiter/waitress for each. our waitress was Lisa, and she did a very good job of looking after us while we were there.
We were slightly disappointed we had to sit inside on an evening (Breakfast can be eaten outside), however with the Air Conditioning on, and the quality of food served, we soon didn't mind.

The rooms are of a decent quality, with the bathrooms being pretty large. The shower curtain didn't really cover where you stood when in the shower , causing us to have a flood any time we used the shower (this isn't really the hotels fault, more user error).

We were in Italy for August 15th, which is a Saint's day, and the Excelsior threw a Gala Dinner. This was a 7 course meal served outside. The experience was brilliant.

The pathway in front of the hotel is a running & cycling track, walking left out of the hotel to the headland and back is a pleasant walk on a morning, and it allows you to see the Castle and Malcesine from a different angle. if you continue past the headland and continue through to the next bay, you arrive at Cassone, which has a picturesque harbour and old light house.

The Castle & Church in Malcesine are definately worth a look. The Castle has a bell situated at the top, if you manage to get to the top on the Hour, the Bell strikes out. Watching the unsuspecting people's reactions to this is quite amusing.

I'd definately recommend this hotel and location in future.

Room Tip: Open the window when having a Hot Bath/shower. It steams up ridiculously quickly otherwise!

This was my second choice of hotel in Malcesine, and I'm glad the first choice was fully booked. The Hotel is only a 10-15 minute stroll along the lakeside to the town. Great view in the morning for breakfast as you have it on the terrace with open views of the lake and mountains.
Excellent and helpful staff, food first class.

The only downside is that some rooms i.e. side view rooms, are not probably worth the extra money,if you want a full lake view then go for it, but you do get this at breakfast and all day if your there. The rooms at the back overlooking the pool and mountains are very good.
An excellent relaxing holiday, couldn,t have wished for a better hotel which is superbly located on the lake, close to the town and ammenities yet far enough away to be nice and peaceful.

Room Tip: Wouldn,t opt for a side lake view,as some of these have a blank wall opposite. If you want a full la...

Excelsior Hotel , Malcesine
The location is superb , however the Hotel lacks imagination with regards the breakfast & evening meals .  Your  tables are allocated to your room & you are seated in the same position every evening . The menu for your evening meal is filled out at your breakfast & the food lacks choice & creativity ,  there are definitely school dinner traits here !
Although it is classed as 4 * We would rate it as 3 * . It has free Internet on the first 2 floors above reception which is great !  Rating out if 10 we have awarded it 6.

Just back from our honeymoon at the Excelsior Bay and just the perfect hotel and Italian town in every way.Just 10 minutes walk from town along the side of the lake it is a little oasis of calm away from hustle and bustle of Malcesine which is a beautifull and full of interesting cobbled street to explore. You never know what is around the corner.A yummy icecream parlour or castle walls or magnifiucent view over the lake. Our hotel/ room was comfortable and very cleanReally nice to have a swimming pool to cool down in as it is very hot in August.Average temp was 33 degrees. The food is very Italian and so delicious. You quickly get used to ordering your evening meal over breakfast but do sometimes forget your choice by the evening.Lots of lovely cafes for real coffee and not a fast food outlet in sight.Malcesine is Italy in a little haven by the lake and cant wait to go back again.Have never been anywhere so different or so beautifull.

Room Tip: Dont pay extra for side sea view as tiny balcony only gives you only a distant glimpse of the lake.

This hotel seems to provoke strong opinions both for and against, and some of the reviews did not seem to augur well for the week that my family spend there 11-18th August.

So, where to start.

The room was perfectly large enough for 3 of us, overlooked the pool, was clean and promptly tidied each morning. The beds were separate - no problem for my wife and I - and my only quibbles are that the fridge had come loose from its' mooring in the cupboard that contained it 9so had to be periodically pulled foward to ensure it shut) and that the jacuzzi bath didn't produce any bubbles. Neither issue bothered us - the fridge was small and easily moved, and we hadn't expected a jacuzzi anyway; we informed the hotel of these problems when we left.

The food, from my son's and my standpoint, was excellent. The breakfast options were more than sufficient to mean that finding lunch was almost irrelevant. Dinner was 4 courses every night except the bank holiday on the Wednesday - which was 6 courses. Our waiter (Aldo) was attentive and polite. The only mix up (over the connection between our table number and room number) was swiftly sorted. My wife was less happy with dinner - for her it was edible. The point is that this is hotel which does not cater for British tastes. If you want burger and chips, or your idea of "Italian cuisine" is limited to spag bol, pizza and tiramisu, then you need to go somewhere else. If you are happy to have a go at Italian cooking as Italians cook it, it's a tasty voyage of discovery.

The location is as near to ideal as you will find with any hotel in Malcesine - walk out the door and you're well placed for a wander by the lake, with views across to the cliffs opposite.

Booking through Thomson, we had a 70 euro discount on drinks - useful as it's not cheap there; we actually had nothing to settle on our bar bill at the end.

Children are not encouraged or much in evidence - this is more of a sedate, older couple's hotel, and I suspect also would not suit anyone wanting to party and disco until late each night. However, my 14 year old was perfectly happy there.

So, the room was in need of some maintenance, and you need to bear in mind the food you'll be getting before you book. But, given that the maintenance issues were minor and I see no point in traveling abroad to eat what I can get in the U.K, I have no problem with rating this hotel highly.

Room Tip: Rooms with a view over the lake will have music playing below them until c. 11:30 each night.

My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed our holiday at the Excelsior Bay Hotel. The room was a bit of a disappointment - quite small and on the side of the hotel - however we did get a bit of a view of the lake from the balcony. Single beds, however, which is not what we are used to. The honeymoon couple who arrived on our plane were really disappointed with this! They pushed the beds together - but you would think the management could have done something a little special for them. There is no mention in the brochure that the rooms all have twin beds. Malcesine is a beautiful place, and this hotel is about a 10 minute walk into the heart of the old town, which is full of character and charm. It is so easy to take a boat from right outside of the hotel to Limone, which makes a lovely half day trip. We visited Riva, which was excellent, with beaches all along the top end of the lake, with pontoons for diving and swimming not far from the shore. This is the place to go if you are into wind-surfing - the place that it was invented! The cable car ride to the top Monte Baldo was one of the highlights of our holiday - even though we had to queue for about 40 minutes to get on it. Once at the top of the mountain we did a short walk, which was signposted as the most difficult - however it was quite easy and only took about half an hour. We had got a leaflet from the Tourist Information Office with walks, but beware! These walks are not well signposted, we got lost and it took about three hours to get back to the cable car! I think we walked about 10 miles - not good in a foreign country! We also visited the castle in Malcesine, where a wedding was taking place - what a beautiful setting for your special day! The tickets for the cable car and the castle were on special offer if you bought them together - I think you save about £3 each if you buy them at the same time. We also did the round-the-lake day trip, which I wouldn't really recommend as you spend a lot of time in the coach in hot weather (although it did mean we visited most of the principal places in Lake Garda - i.e. Garda, Sirmione and this included a boat trip which was nice). The day trip to Verona was good, with the amphitheatre and Juliet's balcony being worth a visit. All in all a fabulous place to visit, and the hotel well recommended, although quite a few guests were ill with stomach complaints. The hotel said that this was due to a virus in the resort, rather than the hotel, but I found a lot of the food under-cooked and avoided this.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front - the view of the lake and mountains is breathtaking.
