I have just spent a few days at the Sporting Hotel in Malcesine for my sister's wedding. The owner of this hotel also owns La Pace Restaurant, please see my review for this also.
The hotel is set on the beautiful shore of Lake Garda, on the Val di Sogno, about a 5 minute drive from the centre of Malcesine. Most of the reviews on this hotel are pretty spot on and gave us some valuable hints/tips so I will only add my personal opinion and a few other hints.
All rooms have beautiful views of the lake which is a real bonus. Our room was no. 31 and consisted of a double bed/put up bed and 2 singles on a mezzanine floor. On first inspection the room was clean and tidy, sheets were crisp and white and the bathroom is a little on the old side (pink tiles) but more importantly it was clean with lots of fresh towels and the shower was quite powerful. To get up to the mezzanine floor was tricky as the steps are pretty much vertical, do not attempt if you have had a few glasses of wine! On the mezzanine the roof is quite low, so mind your head at all times. The kitchenette is very basic, a few pots/pans/cutlery and plates, there was no toaster or corkscrew which made breakfast and opening wine bottles very tricky...
So, I hear you say "go and ask Sergio for one".... I am not sure if it was because we were visiting out of season/end of season but Sergio/other staff were hardly ever there. Constantly there was a note on reception saying be back in 5 (minutes/hours?). However, I will say that when staff were there, they were courteous and helpful and arranged taxis for us when we needed.
A garage is located beneath the hotel, and once you navigated the tight turn to get down to it (when coming through the one way system) there was plenty of space to park your car.
The pool was full of dead insects which wasn't pleasant and the sun loungers had been removed. Did not put off the skinny dipper that went for a morning swim each day (!!)...
I am sure the pool is kept clean during peak season...!
The hotel has Wifi in the reception area only, it did not work from our room. The key for it is written in the little green handbook you will find in your room.
We could not find a safe in our room (although the guide book says there is one in each room), we looked pretty much everywhere but could not see it.
Just along from the hotel is a German run water sports facility (i.e. hobie cats/windsurfing). Did not attempt to do any of these, so not sure of prices etc. Looked good fun though.
The "Tourist Bus" that goes round Malcesine (hotels and town) has a stop right out side the hotel. For 1 euro you can pretty much go on a tour of the town and is handy for getting to/from Malcesine. It is only a smallish bus and does get packed at times (have your wits about you as some people will push young children out the way if there is only a few seats left!!).
The Jolly Discount store is located at the beginning of the one way street that takes you past the hotel. Be aware of its opening times as it closes for a few hours during the afternoon, athough a little grocery store across the road was open and had lovely fresh fruit/vegetables/meats and breads.
I'd like to write more, especially my experience of Malcesine but this review is of the hotel..
Overall the hotel is clean and tidy with basic amenities and the staff were friendly enough (Sergio has a loud booming voice!!), its location is perfect on the shore of Lake Garda and sitting on your balcony at night watching skinny dippers was a sight to behold. I would recommend this hotel to other people, although I probably wouldn't return myself although that is only my opinion and many others on here have said they would.
