“Nice Hotel, Spectacular View...”
Reviewed October 3, 2012

I have just spent a few days at the Sporting Hotel in Malcesine for my sister's wedding. The owner of this hotel also owns La Pace Restaurant, please see my review for this also.

The hotel is set on the beautiful shore of Lake Garda, on the Val di Sogno, about a 5 minute drive from the centre of Malcesine. Most of the reviews on this hotel are pretty spot on and gave us some valuable hints/tips so I will only add my personal opinion and a few other hints.

All rooms have beautiful views of the lake which is a real bonus. Our room was no. 31 and consisted of a double bed/put up bed and 2 singles on a mezzanine floor. On first inspection the room was clean and tidy, sheets were crisp and white and the bathroom is a little on the old side (pink tiles) but more importantly it was clean with lots of fresh towels and the shower was quite powerful. To get up to the mezzanine floor was tricky as the steps are pretty much vertical, do not attempt if you have had a few glasses of wine! On the mezzanine the roof is quite low, so mind your head at all times. The kitchenette is very basic, a few pots/pans/cutlery and plates, there was no toaster or corkscrew which made breakfast and opening wine bottles very tricky...

So, I hear you say "go and ask Sergio for one".... I am not sure if it was because we were visiting out of season/end of season but Sergio/other staff were hardly ever there. Constantly there was a note on reception saying be back in 5 (minutes/hours?). However, I will say that when staff were there, they were courteous and helpful and arranged taxis for us when we needed.

A garage is located beneath the hotel, and once you navigated the tight turn to get down to it (when coming through the one way system) there was plenty of space to park your car.

The pool was full of dead insects which wasn't pleasant and the sun loungers had been removed. Did not put off the skinny dipper that went for a morning swim each day (!!)...
I am sure the pool is kept clean during peak season...!

The hotel has Wifi in the reception area only, it did not work from our room. The key for it is written in the little green handbook you will find in your room.

We could not find a safe in our room (although the guide book says there is one in each room), we looked pretty much everywhere but could not see it.

Just along from the hotel is a German run water sports facility (i.e. hobie cats/windsurfing). Did not attempt to do any of these, so not sure of prices etc. Looked good fun though.

The "Tourist Bus" that goes round Malcesine (hotels and town) has a stop right out side the hotel. For 1 euro you can pretty much go on a tour of the town and is handy for getting to/from Malcesine. It is only a smallish bus and does get packed at times (have your wits about you as some people will push young children out the way if there is only a few seats left!!).

The Jolly Discount store is located at the beginning of the one way street that takes you past the hotel. Be aware of its opening times as it closes for a few hours during the afternoon, athough a little grocery store across the road was open and had lovely fresh fruit/vegetables/meats and breads.

I'd like to write more, especially my experience of Malcesine but this review is of the hotel..

Overall the hotel is clean and tidy with basic amenities and the staff were friendly enough (Sergio has a loud booming voice!!), its location is perfect on the shore of Lake Garda and sitting on your balcony at night watching skinny dippers was a sight to behold. I would recommend this hotel to other people, although I probably wouldn't return myself although that is only my opinion and many others on here have said they would.

Thanks

Spent a week in malcesine at the Hotel Sporting with family for a wedding and it was absolutely beautiful. I only wish we could have stayed longer.

Arrived at Verona airport which is about 1 hour away dependent on traffic, but my suggestion would be to travel straight to the Garda area then travel the lakeside route to Malcesine which is absolutely stunning.

When we arrived we found the staff really relaxed and stayed out of your way so you could enjoy your holiday. On the flip side if you needed them you need only ask.

We stayed in room 21 which has one of the best views over the lake and surrounding area. It was clean and well fitted out with comfortable beds, a tv which had the option of some English speaking channels and all you would need for self catering. Plenty of car parking space and all very accessible. There are even mountain bikes available so you can get around while you area there.

The hotel was lovely and clean and as I said there, if you could drop a hotel anywhere you wanted it then this would be where you would do it. It's about 20 metres to the lake which was freezing cold but once you were suitably numbed, the swimming actually wasn't too bad. Beautiful clear water and the weather apart from one day was about 30 degrees. Generally if it rains, it is for about an hour then it clears up but we had a full day of thunder, lightning and rain but it wasn't all that bad.

Sergio is the owner of the hotel and both he and his staff are lovely. Always smiling, happy and very pleasant people.

A local supermarket is about a five minute walk and it will provide you with everything you need. Try the Bardolino wine which can be bought from a pump, by the litre and costs next to nothing.

A twenty minute walk around the lake will take you into the town of Malcesine, a taxi can be ordered from the hotel which costs about 8 euros or there is a bus every hour for 1 euro per person with kids free.

There is a spa hotel in the next area down from the hotel for the ladies which I have been told was reasonably good. They do good deals for hen nights / pamper sessions.

Malcesine is an absolutely fantastic town, rustic, traditional and truly Italy. Most people have a reasonable grasp of English so if your Italian is rusty then you can generally communicate without too much trouble. Some really good resteraunts and lovely people and at no time did we feel like, as tourists, we were not wanted.

We went to Caneva world and the Movie resort on one of the days and really enjoyed it. They are side by side and for a twin ticket for the whole day, it was about 80 euros for my wife and I and our two kids. Lots of good rides, original settings and the water is always fun. Be aware if the kids are smaller than 1.40 metres, they will struggle to get on most of the rides and well tantrums do occur.

Sergio also owns a bistro / resteraunt called La Pace which does lovely food so if you are struggling to find somewhere which you shouldn't then that's an option. The food is lovely and staff are polite and inviting too. Again this is by the lake and has a lovely view.

Venice, I am led to believe is a bit far away unless you know exactly where you are going but Verona is stunning. A beautiful city which is full of things to see, such as amphitheatres, Romeo and Juliet, cathedrals, parks, the lot. I would certainly recommend.

I was totally relaxed that had any problems arisen during my stay, Sergio or his staff would have done everything they could to help. Nothing seemed too much trouble.

Overall, a great stay at a lovely hotel and I will definitely be back. A big thank you to Sergio and his staff who made a wedding experience truly wonderful.

Excellent location, beautifull scenery with fantastic views from every Appartments balcony. The Lake is approx. 5-10 meters infront of the Hotel. The owner extremely helpfull and friendly. Appartment spacious slept 7 easily with the addition of an extra bed. Efficient quiet air conditioning.Clean and well equipped. Washers and dryers available plus free internet. Small pool and gardens plus loungers. Free bike hire which is great to go into Malcesine or to the markets which you can get to safely around the lakeside.Malcesine where our wedding was is the next bay along. A beautiful town, marvellous architecture, castle, shops and restaurants. Walkable or a few Euros by taxi. The owner will book these plus transfers from Verona, allow 90 minutes. We would all recommend this Hotel and certainly go back. It contributed to a perfect holiday and a beautiful wedding..

Room Tip: All rooms overlook the lake. Higher rooms even better view

found this on the net as a reasonably priced stopover for a malcesine wedding. It was an excellent choice, right on the lakeside, great views, clean well appointed and so laid back I had to make three attempts to pay the bill ! The wedding reception was right next door, by chance, and the photos were done, lakeside, beneath our balcony...says it all. Would like to think I'll be back !

Perfect location on lake Garda, nice clean apartment . Super hosts very helpful and super friendly. Location is also very good for staying with kids, no need to cross the busy road to get access to the lake. Our 4 kids enjoyed the stay very much and appreciated the offered beverages from the host.
The restaurant next door is an excellent tip we had a romantic dinner whilst the kids were in bed after having enjoyed their pizzas.
We definitely will be back when visiting the area again
