Spent a week in malcesine at the Hotel Sporting with family for a wedding and it was absolutely beautiful. I only wish we could have stayed longer.
Arrived at Verona airport which is about 1 hour away dependent on traffic, but my suggestion would be to travel straight to the Garda area then travel the lakeside route to Malcesine which is absolutely stunning.
When we arrived we found the staff really relaxed and stayed out of your way so you could enjoy your holiday. On the flip side if you needed them you need only ask.
We stayed in room 21 which has one of the best views over the lake and surrounding area. It was clean and well fitted out with comfortable beds, a tv which had the option of some English speaking channels and all you would need for self catering. Plenty of car parking space and all very accessible. There are even mountain bikes available so you can get around while you area there.
The hotel was lovely and clean and as I said there, if you could drop a hotel anywhere you wanted it then this would be where you would do it. It's about 20 metres to the lake which was freezing cold but once you were suitably numbed, the swimming actually wasn't too bad. Beautiful clear water and the weather apart from one day was about 30 degrees. Generally if it rains, it is for about an hour then it clears up but we had a full day of thunder, lightning and rain but it wasn't all that bad.
Sergio is the owner of the hotel and both he and his staff are lovely. Always smiling, happy and very pleasant people.
A local supermarket is about a five minute walk and it will provide you with everything you need. Try the Bardolino wine which can be bought from a pump, by the litre and costs next to nothing.
A twenty minute walk around the lake will take you into the town of Malcesine, a taxi can be ordered from the hotel which costs about 8 euros or there is a bus every hour for 1 euro per person with kids free.
There is a spa hotel in the next area down from the hotel for the ladies which I have been told was reasonably good. They do good deals for hen nights / pamper sessions.
Malcesine is an absolutely fantastic town, rustic, traditional and truly Italy. Most people have a reasonable grasp of English so if your Italian is rusty then you can generally communicate without too much trouble. Some really good resteraunts and lovely people and at no time did we feel like, as tourists, we were not wanted.
We went to Caneva world and the Movie resort on one of the days and really enjoyed it. They are side by side and for a twin ticket for the whole day, it was about 80 euros for my wife and I and our two kids. Lots of good rides, original settings and the water is always fun. Be aware if the kids are smaller than 1.40 metres, they will struggle to get on most of the rides and well tantrums do occur.
Sergio also owns a bistro / resteraunt called La Pace which does lovely food so if you are struggling to find somewhere which you shouldn't then that's an option. The food is lovely and staff are polite and inviting too. Again this is by the lake and has a lovely view.
Venice, I am led to believe is a bit far away unless you know exactly where you are going but Verona is stunning. A beautiful city which is full of things to see, such as amphitheatres, Romeo and Juliet, cathedrals, parks, the lot. I would certainly recommend.
I was totally relaxed that had any problems arisen during my stay, Sergio or his staff would have done everything they could to help. Nothing seemed too much trouble.
Overall, a great stay at a lovely hotel and I will definitely be back. A big thank you to Sergio and his staff who made a wedding experience truly wonderful.
