“Decent location but miserable and unhelpful staff and very small rooms”
Reviewed August 3, 2010

Having visited Italy in many occasions and in particular the Lakes, I was again looking forward to great food, wine and hospitality. The pictures presented a decent picture of the hotel which were met once we arrived. We were met with a 'frosty' receptionist who, during our stay, sometimes ignored us or gave a cold stare which was downright rude. During our stay she was unhelpful and when asked to use an iron to iron creased clothes, my girlfriend was met with a look like she'd just enquired about borrowing a shotgun to hunt butterflies with. Two days later when she asked for an iron, she was met with a flailing of arms and whining in Italian before being led down to the laundry room where she was left to iron her clothes.

The same rude Italian receptionist also argued with other staff right in front of us, whilst we sat at the bar one evening. Not being fluent in Italian didn't prevent us from understanding that the conversation wasn't a pleasant one.

Another one of the staff who worked behind the bar and also served breakfast was almost as rude. Asking for a SECOND coffee at breakfast created tension and a stare ... leaving 'froth' from your cappuccino in your cup whilst asking for another drink also resulted in a muttering from this lady.

To the rooms (we booked a triple room for 2 adults and one 14 year old) were very small ... the 3rd bed was basically a camp bed with 12" walkway between the bed and the table at the end of the room. It was far too small for 3 people, although as always, spending time in a hotel room isn't what my holidays are for. The bathroom was also small in keeping with the room.

The hotel was clean and the pool area was very tidy at all times. The location was ideal for us, although for people with small children, crossing the busy main road and walking down the steep hill looked like a bit of a challenge.

Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our time in Malcesine and having stayed at another hotel in town previously, would recommend a holiday there. However, if you want friendly staff who create a pleasant ambiance around a hotel and or a decent sized room, then I would recommend NOT staying at the Hotel Internazionale!

we stayed in the annex and at least a fan would have been nice. very hot on a night but apart from that we had a great time the staff are very nice food was good apart from the sweets which were very repetitive and basic (fruit or pudding of some sort)nice bar average price and quiet on a night (closed up at around 11.00, 11.30) very clean ,a good base to get around 10 mins walk to center of town and ferrys .yes i would go back to this hotel.

Disappointed on arrival to our room that there was a block of flats in front of the hotel blocking most of the lake view ahead and to the left.
We stayed in the main hotel and because we did not want a 'possible restricted view' as stated in the Inghams brochure, we paid, per person, per night for a lake view, but ended up in the worst room in the hotel for a view of the lake. It was OK if we stood at the right hand corner of the balcony and faced right.
At night the security lights of the flats flashed on and off all night - it was like trying to sleep next door to a lighthouse. Not being able to sleep I counted the seconds the light stayed off - 2 being the least and 90 seconds the longest. When we asked if we could move, the older sister was most rude and suggested we draw the curtains -which had cost them a fortune! I said I'd complain to Inghams and she retorted 'do what you like'.
and flounced off.
I spoke to the rep who said we should not have had a restricted view as we'd paid extra to ensure a view. On return, the travel agency staff said the same but Inghams weren't interested.
Apart from the 2 sisters the other two waitresses were great and they made us feel welcome.
Food was good but inclined to be repetative.
It was unfortunate we were given a duff room - We wont trust Inghams again.

There are 2 parts to this hotel - the main building where all the rooms are 3*, and an annex at the back with 2* rooms. We stayed in the annex - the rooms were very basic, but mainly clean and well maintained. No views from the annex though, and the kitchen noises start outside the window quite early.
The pool is small but beautiful, directly overlooking the lake. We were on half-board, and the evening meal was extremely tasty and very generous. Vegetarians beware that they consider fish and seafood to be a vegetarian option.
Generally very impressed with food, service, and pool facilities and views.

I have just returned from a fabulous week at the the internazionale. After reading other reviews I had fully expected to be staying in less than perfect hotel however I found the hotel to be lovely, equally as good as the four star hotels that I had stayed in at other resorts around the lake. We stayed in the 2* annexe after picking up this holiday through lastminute.com. Other than the room having no air conditioning (which we knew about in advance) the room was good., clean and tidy with a good sized bathroon and a balcony.
The food in the restaurant was lovely with plenty of choice ,I took my 16 year old with me and he ate every bit of every evening meal we had (even the artichokes and fennell!) it was great to see the chef at work in the kitchen preparing our meals to order and then the waitresses serving us at the table silver service style!
The infinity pool was undoubtedly the^ best bit", the view from it was absolutely fantastic.
All in all a great holiday, very relaxing , hot and sunny, great views, friendly staff ( except the sisters who were a bit frosty) monte baldo cablecar amazing, shall I go on. Just book it!!!!!

We went with Thomsons for a week at the beginning of September. Can’t really fault Lake Garda in general or Malcesine in particular – bottom line is if you paid nearly £600 each you expect a better class of Hotel. Lack of land must be an issue but purpose built Hotels elsewhere in Europe are much better and you get more for your money.

As previously stated in reviews, this is a small family run hotel run for the benefit of the owners and the customers get in the way of that. Mostly this shows itself in quite funny little things but sometimes it is blatantly rude and condescending. A lot of what follows revolves around a lack of info or empathy to paying customers

On arrival, no info was given about the hotel – just the strict dining times and a menu choice for that evening (to be filled in there and then!). We were not taken to the room just shown to the annexe.
The welcome card we had heard about was not given to us – we asked for it a couple of days later. That seemed a chore at reception.

We had a large family room on a corner in the annexe. No air-con but we had been warned. It was hot but as with previous reviewers the room had an electric fan and we worked out the best way to keep doors/shutters open to maximise the room temperature. Can’t really fault room - big room, big balcony, great views of the cable cars etc. Two whinges – no tea/coffee facilities and the shower was dangerously compact – how larger people got in, let alone turn round I do not know. Know now to take a kettle although have feeling it would have been confiscated!

Where do I start with the dining experience. Think Fawlty Towers episode when the Americans arrive when chef has finished!
Breakfast was much as you would expect on the continent, I would be nit-picking to fault it. As service was 8am to 10am, it wasn’t re-filled as much as late arrivers would want.
Dinner was much more fun!
Good points – Food was actually pretty good, very good on some days and a lot seemed home-made. Portions were fair and more than enough – the only thing that you could decide the portion was the salad bar.
Bad points – Only served for an hour 7pm to 8pm with very little lee-way! Desserts were not upto much usually a packet “Angel Delight” masquerading as Lemon Cream. It was a conveyor belt. As soon as your cutlery hit the plate the next course arrived. It was rushed. Choice of two starters, two mains + one veggie but choice was made at breakfast which is understandable in a small hotel but gets irritating. The look we got from the owner in the morning for saying we wouldn’t be in for dinner was priceless but rude. On last warning – do not expect another knife or fork for your main if you used any for the starter. Mine was taken from my starter plate and put back on the table for me to use again. Again, funny once but eventually you think I have paid for better than this.
Not sure points – Your table, based on room number, was your table! Do not try and sit anywhere else! I came round to this idea as we were sat next to the same people every meal and this gave a good basis for conversation.

The Pool and the other facilities are actually quite good. Pool terrace has stunning views of the lake and was an excellent place to relax (not too many kids around). The gym consisted of only four machines but was in a spacious room and was more than adequate for holiday needs. Same with the Jacuzzi/sauna etc. No explanation was ever given however about availability and prices. Apathy abounds – they have the facilities but it seems to be too much effort to get you to use them, even if you are willing to pay for them.
The bar again, was perfectly adequate, and with the lake-side terrace was very pleasant to use. There was however, no incentive to use it. There was no effort to persuade people to stay in the evening. The hotel was probably too small for “entertainment” but you felt if you asked for a drink after 8pm you were keeping them up. The prices were pretty good and by no means expensive.

Location of the hotel was overall pretty good. This swung it for us when we booked and it was fine. Five minutes to the start of the centre and only seven more to the ferry point. Bit of a steep bit coming up from the road to the hotel but unless you are lake-front there is no escape from the slopes!

Overall, if you have a sense of humour and are fairly tolerate, this hotel is just fine. If not, don’t stay here.

We honeymooned at the hotel August 2009. We can not praise it enough. The hotel was extremely well situated and from what we could gather from fellow travellers one of a few hotel with a fab pool and view of the lake. The staff (even the sisters after a while) were friendly and efficient. What surprised us the most was the standard of the food. Although very similar (we stayed for 2 weeks) it was very good and lots of it. Breakfast was a selection of cold meats, cheese, pastries and fruit. Dinner a fresh salad, starter (normally pasta of some sort) and then a main. There were 2 - 3 selections to choose from. The rooms were clean and cleaned daily by staff. We stayed in the main part of the hotel which had air conditioning. My only word of caution was that some people booking through Thomsons (we were Inghams) were in what they called the annex, a building adjacent to ours. This did not have air conditioning and I believe was very hot. I had read some of the poorer reviews before I went, and can honestly say that I will go back there should I return to Malcesine :)
