The choice of food was very good and the meals were excellent value for money. We liked the little tasters you got at the start of the meal and the salad bar was fantastic with so much choice. Starters and main meals were very good and the desserts were beautifully presented.

It was our friends birthday while we were away and the chef did a beautiful and very tasty cake for his birthday.

I was not very hungry and I wanted to have a light lunch with typical Italian food and at the same time make a comparison to Scandinavian kitchen. No half portions were available so I had to settle for only primi piatti or secondo, so I chose Vitello Tonnato which was very good in Tallinn.
In Al Pacio appearance of the dose was plain but it tasted good. I had Tiramisu for dessert, but it lacked the lightness whitch makes it so delicious. It was too ponderous and I am sorry to say, I didn´t finish it. Service was good, location is restful with lake view.

We stayed in Malcesine in April for our wedding. We had read fantastic reviews about Castello and we wanted to make sure we ate here before leaving. During our stay we went into reception to book a meal for the following night for 8 adults and 3 children between the ages of 3 and 9. We spoke to a female receptionist in her late twenties/early thirties, who stated the hotel was fully booked and as a result so was the restaurant. However, we got the impression this was only the case once we had mentioned the children ( it doesn't state anywhere that children are not allowed and they too can stay at the hotel). We went away really disappointed as we really wanted to try it before we left. Some other adults from our party decided to go and book a meal for the two of them. They went into reception with their 6 year old and spoke with Marco (manager) who was very accommodating and asked if the little boy wanted a seat too.
So we returned later to try and book another table for just the two of us.
When we arrived for our meal, the restaurant was empty, they were not fully booked as the female receptionist had stated. Throughout the course of our meal, the restaurant probably had 4 or 5 tables occupied, but they were not even half full. They could have easily seated the 8adults and 3 children.
We were bitterly disappointed by this, the food was amazing, but the attitude we received from the receptionist really did leave a sour taste in our mouth.
Nice if you are a couple on your own, but if you have children I wouldn't even bother asking. Very clear they don't like children. Big loss for them, as they missed out on a massive food and drinks bill from all of us!!

Dear Kate S,
I am very sorry about what happened and for your disappointment. As I am indeed the female receptionist, I feel very sad about the situation, I always try hard to accommodate guests requests and, when this is not possible, to offer a good solution, with a positive attitude.
The owners who are two brothers have 5 children (from 8 month to 13 years old) and I can assure that we are an absolute child-friendly hotel. Children are more than welcome, reason why, as you have correctly stated, you don’t find anywhere written, that we do not accept them (everyday we have guests with children eating here). What happened that time, was that the only table left for 12 people was already booked although the restaurant was not completely busy . In fact the rest of the tables for 2-4 people were still available and we, therefore, accommodate you later on with pleasure.
What happened was just an unfortunate misunderstanding.
Thanks for the compliments on the food eaten which is our core business.
Sincerely yours
Francesca

We were drawn to this restaurant due to the beautiful location next to the castle with a lake view from a terraced balcony. The hotel looked good too. We were first met by a lady who seemed to be working on the hotel desk, and was very pleasant. She handed over to a male waiter, who was the worst waiter I have ever experienced. He was incredibly rude, unaccommodating, and made us feel very uncomfortable. We considered leaving after ordering drinks, but stayed on giving him the benefit of the doubt that he was having a bad day. Things went from bad to worse, however. My partner wanted to try the local trout, which came with a side of boiled potatoes. When asked if she could swap potatoes for pasta (arguably making the dish more Italian...?) she was told "I don't know why you would want to commit such a sacrilege"!! We were both astounded but he continued... "I don't know why you would do this?" he went on... When the food was served, it was simply ok. We had a side salad between us, which we didn't finish. As you can imagine, comments and facial expressions were made when he cleared things away. The restaurant was completely empty at the time, and it's no wonder that the others are full when you compare the service. Avoid the mistake we made after being seduced in with the location and go elsewhere.

What to comment ... sometimes we would also like to say to some guests "stay away", but since we are professionals and we love our work, we simply patience. In the specific case we leave you to judge the quality (cultural and educational) of our expert reviewer (trout with a side of pasta ... and why not a pizza?... it would seem even more "Italian"). Our waiters have never a "worse day" – they can’t afford it - our customers apparently yes.
P.S. Everyone is looking for the classic Italian cuisine: is supposed for enjoy it and not for alter it and make it exclusively touristic.

Outstanding restaurant – Good choice on the menu (allowed one choice from each of the four courses on half board), really exceptional/memorable food, lovely setting and ambience, and excellent service. Clearly a popular restaurant and deservedly so.
