A beautiful castle set perched atop a hillside town in the hills of Abruzzo! The staff were beyond friendly and wonderful making the stay even more beautiful. Cozy little town tucked down winding streets. The food at the castle was wonderful and the live jazz on Saturday stellar. Rooms are beyond spacious with beautiful views. Exceptional for the price and quality. We cannot wait to return!

Castello Chiola, Loreto Aprutino

We arrived at this hotel late Saturday afternoon at the same time as a wedding party was expected. Several parking places were roped off, reserved for the bridal party, but our car was too big to drive around their narrow road to further parking spaces. We were told in no uncertain terms that we could not park at the front because of the bridal party but, when the porter came out to see, he opened one of the roped off spaces for us.

Our room was huge with comfortable twin beds, as requested. There was also a huge bathroom, with twin sinks and a bathtub with shower over. We had reserved a room with views and the tiny windows did give views, over the rooftops of the village. There was no internet in the room. In fact there was no internet except through the hotel's own computer behind the reception desk.

We went looking for the bar and found the dining room. No-one was around so we asked at reception where the bar was. Someone came to open it up for us but decided it was so warm and stuffy we would be better off in the dining room. Dinner was a choice from a very short menu and was one of the worst meals we had in our 2 weeks in Italy. I ordered a pastry starter which came with what looked like a pile of vomit piled on top. I assumed the "vomit" was mushrooms but could not be sure as no mushrooms were mentioned on the menu and the pile was tasteless. I was too scared to ask what the pile was as pigs' cheeks were also on the menu. The pastry had been microwaved so it was as tough as an old boot. The second course was as forgettable as the first, so do not expect haute cuisine here.

We had planned to watch some live tennis on our computers in our room but ended up having to sit behind the reception desk watching it on their computer. Very embarassing with other guests and customers coming to the desk for information!!

Breakfast was the usual array of sweet cakes, breads, etc. There was no hot food on offer and after the previous night's dinner we did not want to risk asking for any.

We felt most unwelcome at this hotel, due I suspect to the staff being pre-occupied with the wedding party. I would hope that on a normal night the service would be better than we received.

A wonderful place to visit if you want to relax and get away from it all. We stayed here during our honeymoon and would definitely recommend it to those who want absolute peace and quiet. A car is essential although make sure you study a map of the local area well before venturing out as local signs are very unreliable! It really is quite a remote area and it does not cater for tourists much (the touris office never opened in week we were there!). The breakfasts were good but the we would have expected more from dinner given the high standard of accommodation.....Staff at reception were very helpful and their local restaurant recommendations were excellent! The local pizzeria is particular good. As mentioned earlier the castle is very quiet and at no stage did it really come to life! Sometimes it felt like we were the only people staying and getting a pre dinner drinks or even at drink poolside was a challenge as waiters etc were often hard to track down. All in all we had a very relaxing holiday in a beautiful setting..........

Stayed for five nights, excellent room, the largest we have ever stayed in and well decorated and appointed. Very friendly and helpful staff. Whole hotel very impressive with good swimming pool and excellent views in almost all directions. Only criticism is that the restaurant seems not to have heard of vegetables, even though they are mentioned on the menu! Would certainly go there again and recommend it.

  • Liked — Space and quality
  • Disliked — No vegetables in the restaurant

We recently stayed here for one night on a trip from Ravenna to Brindisi. I loved the hotel, it was very grand and our room was spacious and well decorated, in style with the hotel. The receptionist was efficient and welcoming, as was the porter. We had a small problem with the bath which was fixed immediately. As we did not know the town, we ate in the restaurant . We were the only guests eating in a lovely looking restaurant, which could of been intimidating but the restaurant manager was very friendly and helped make the evening very enjoyable. The food was fine, I have eaten better meals but it was sufficient for the price charged. Afterwards we sat by the pool and watched the lights of the town, which was a lovely end to the evening. The following morning at breakfast (which was again fine) I was presented with a bouquet of flowers from the hotel, they had checked my passport and realised it was my birthday, a very nice touch. Overall a lovely experience and if we are in Pescara area again would definitely return.

We stayed at Castello Chiola in December 2005 with some friends and I cant rate this hotel enough. We had a Junior Suite which was huge and had the most fantastic views of the snow capped mountains and valleys. In summer the pool area would be great.

The breakfast was plentiful and varied, the service was spot on and they were very helpful in booking restaurants for us. We went to one of the Rocco Forte restaurants one night which Id highly recommend and on our last night we had dinner in the hotel in a great vaulted dining room with candles etc. We had excellent wine and the food was also great.

The only thing I will say is that you do need a car to get around to see the area but Id really recommend getting out and about as there isnt much to do in the immediate area.

Spent three days here very recently.A somewhat depressing experience to put it mildly. The hotel is in a marvellous position overlooking the town and has been sympathetically converted in keeping with the original castle facade and interior layout.Reception was efficient though not noticeably welcoming. Our room was extremely spacious but stylistically bland with non functioning air conditioning. We came in part for the pool, only to discover in early May, with the prevailing temperature at about 70 degrees F,and it having recently been cleaned, that the facility was closed.Indeed the overall ambience during our stay suggested that the place was barely alive - there were few other guests even on a Friday night- and the staffing resembled that last seen on the Marie Celeste!
Turning to matters of catering - this was the only hotel I have ever encountered where it proved impossible to obtain a pre dinner drink! The bar did eventually open but the sole member of staff ignored us and went off to do more noble things.Dinner turned out to be no more than fair and nowhere near the standard that a hotel of this potential calibre should be serving in its only restaurant.Service was relatively prompt given that only one seriously unsmiling member of staff was in attendance and that hardly anyone else was eating that evening.Another first - full marks for honesty here - was the warning on the main menu that ingredients could be frozen, pouched, dried or perish the thought, fresh! Breakfast was tired but just about acceptable although any staff were again noticeable by their absence.Such a pity and a seriously missed opportunity as Loreto is hardly awash with gastonomic experiences and the standards on display here seemed to lack any real concern.Perhaps, when full, the place has some buzz but on this occasion the hotel seemed lost in slumber.
