“Good value for money”
Reviewed February 16, 2013

This hotel is in a great location to ski many resorts. With a hire car it's only about 20 minutes drive to Cortina, Alta Badia & Arabba. We booked everything separately and saved a lot compared to a package holiday. The hotel is clean and warm with friendly staff. The food was good (half board) and although the hotel is basic, that's all we wanted as the holiday was all about skiing. Request a room in the main building as we were across the road & on the 3rd floor with no lift!!! Take a travel kettle & some tea/ coffee/ milk as there's no facilities in the room. There's a small rental service for ski hire but not much choice for boots so if you don't have your own, hire in a resort. There's an excellent boot room with key code access but beware.... take a lock for your boots. Some idiot took mine by mistake on our 4th day and didn't even have the good manners to phone so they weren't returned until 7.30pm that night!!!! It's a 5 minute drive to the Falzarego Pass and the hotel have a ski bus service to the cable car. You can take a bus from that point but we used our hire car for convenience. The road was cleared & gritted every day and when we had a snow dump mid-holiday, the hotel used a mini digger & snow blower and we all got stuck in with shovels to get out of the car park. We bought a Dolomiti superski pass to cover the whole area and were spoilt for choice. The mountain restaurants were good and reasonably priced and the pistes were kept in excellent condition. Be aware.... we took a piste down in to Cortina on our last day, only to find the cable car we needed to get back to our car had closed at 1.30pm. Overall, I'd recommend the hotel to anyone who isn't looking for luxury but wants a good, comfortable & clean base in order to ski a fantastic area.

Room Tip: Request main building if you don't want to climb stairs.

the Sasso di Stria hotel is strategically located in the best part of the Dolomiti Superki area. Most hotels in this ski area are quite expensive, but Sasso di Stria is not. I have stayed in this hotel 5 or 6 years, for a week each year. The hotel is not state of the art, and it is not right next to the ski slopes. The furnishings are basic, but everything you need is there. The rooms are quite big, and the beds are comfortable. The food is excellent, and you get more than enough. Wine by your meal is reletively cheap. The hotel has a shuttle service to the ski lift at passo Falzarego, but if you ski there you are limited to a small area. You can leave the area skiing, but then you will need a ski bus to get back. If you bring a car, you can reach the Cortina 'd Ampezzo ski area in about 20 minutes (the town in 30), of Arabba in about 20 min, or the Armentarola ski lift in about 15 min. You can ski the whole ski area from any of those, and you have a change of scene if you start your ski day somewhere else everyday. The ski area is dotted with excellent small restaurants, which serve great Italian dishes for reasonable prices.
The hotel has changed ownership a few years ago. Nowadays, most of the staff are from eastern Europe. They are friendly and do a good job. The hotel offers ski hire and ski pass sales.
