just back from livigno, and stayed this year at the zodiac.

Clean, but basic the hotel provides everything you need, the room had wc, shower(hot), big room with 3 beds, balcony, relatively quiet.

The location is fantastic, 1/2 way between gallis lift 20 and the tagliede gondola and lift 23, also failry close and walkable to the motolino gondola,

Breakfast was good, u r given coffee, french toast, rolls, croissants, butter, jame etc, however ask for bread and cheese, juice , milk etc no problem.

Ski locker room is ok,

Ideal base for skiing and apres ski, near to mickys pub, helvettia, kuhstall and gallis, lots of restaurants nearby.

My wife and I visited Hotel Zodiac for a week in February 2009 on a bed and breakfast basis. Despite some mixed reviews we decided to go with the Zodiac due to it's location and cost, and we were not disappointed.

The hotel consists of twin, triple and double rooms and we found ourselves in a triple room with 3 single beds. This gave us a slightly larger room which was more than big enough for the two of us and would also fit three comfortably. The hotel itself has a little bar/cafe but is not really suitable for eating or drinking in a meaningful way, however there are plenty of bars and hotel restaurants within a 2 minute walk. I would particularly recommend the spaghetti house at the top of the road which we only found on our last night that does an excellent value 3 course meal with complimentary drinks and little extras throughout the courses.

The breakfast was bread rolls, croissant and jam which is sufficient to get you started on the slopes, we started taking down cheeses and ham bought in a supermarket and there was no objection to this from the owners. Breakfast runs from 0800 to 0930 so is suitable for those who like to get on the slopes as soon as the lifts open, and those who prefer a slightly more relaxed start to the day.

The resort of Livigno was a pleasant surprise - excellent pistes with generally good accessibility although the wind did affect the higher lifts almost every other day whilst we were there. I would say excellent for beginners and intermediates, and sufficient for experienced skiers if looking at a week.

Overall I would recommend the Zodiac for what it is - a basic and comfortable ski hotel with no frills but certanily no problems either. If you are planning a break that includes a mix of time on the slopes and time being pampered elsewhere it may not be ideal, however for a week focussed on skiing it is perfect.

Just back from a great week in Livigno - went with a group of 16 people and chose the Hotel Zodiac, booked through Topflight.

As Hotels go this one is fairly basic but it ticked most of the boxes - Rooms were warm, clean, good size and comfortable. most had a balcony and the location was perfect - smack bang in the middle of Livigno.

As i was part of a large group, we occupied most of the rooms in the Hotel (Apologies to the other guests as we sort of took over!), the Triple room we booked was a good size as were most of the twins and Doubles. Having stayed in Apartments previously where 5 of us were squeezed into a tiny space, a Hotel is definately worth the extra few quid in my opinion.

We had a continental breakfast included and just to note that you will only be given juice and a croissant unless you ask! There is a variey of cheese, meats and breads available if you want it!

A few points to keep in mind though:

To my surprise, not all rooms have showers - some, including my own only had a bath which was inconvenient but as my sister was staying next door i popped in there each day for a shower rather than go to the bother of moving! Not sure whay this is as all the bathrooms are a good size! The management seemed very friendly and did offer a move if we wanted!

The 2nd thing i would say is that the walls are paper thin! Conversations can be clearly heard on opposite ends of the corridors as well as most other things!!!! This is not the Hotel for light sleepers!

All in all we had a great time, liked the Ski School and the nightlife was lively!

I did find that this time a few extra charges have popped up around the resort which was a little annoying! e.g. While we had pre booked all our lift passes and equipment in advance, an "optional" charge of €20 for insurance was requested from all of us on picking up our boots and skis! The only problem is that it is not optional!!! Despite having my own Travel Insurance, the rude staff in the hire shop took €20 off all of us before we could take the equipment for absolutley nothing!!!!! Even if you rent a secure locker in the hire shop itself, you still have to pay this charge!!!

Also, 11 of us on a learn to Ski pack had to fork our a further €5 each to use a conveyor belt type lift on their 1st day of lessons before we were taken up the proper lifts!!!! The instructor simply said, "either you use this or you walk up " and this is after paying €150 for a 6 day lift pass!!!!

I realise that these are relitavely small amounts in the grand scheme of things but it amounted to almost €500 for the group -it would have bought a good few drinks at the bar!!!

All in all i would choose this Hotel and resort again but beware that it will be a 5-6 hour comute by bus to Livigno.

On the positive, it is a Duty free resort so eating out and drinking is very cheap as are cigarettes, cosmetics etc.

We stayed in the Zodiac from 23/02/08 till 01/02/08
Don't be fooled, this hotel is very basic.
However it was clean, warm and right slap bang in the middle of Livigno. The one thing that the this hotel does have going for it is the location. If you do not need luxury then I would seriousl recommend this hotel.

Here are the bad points;
It is very basic, our room did not have the room to swing a cat in. Our bathroom only had a shower, no bath.
Breakfast is minimal, a half baguette and jam with tea of coffee.
Forget the restaurant and the bar.
The rooms are not very soundproof, there was a big group of Irish staying on the same floor as us and they continually woke us up at 2am, but then again if you have considerate guests this will not happen to you.
The ski store at the bottom of the hotel did not have a lock on it,
There were no tea or coffee making facilities in the room.

Here are the good points;
Its Cheap
Its Clean
Its Central - you could not get much better for the ski schools, restaurants, bars and buses.
Its warm

Some points of other reviewers I do not agree with.
The staff were not rude. There were two of them, one could not speak English so could not talk to you - no problem there I can't speak Italian and we were in Italy. The barman who doubled as the evening person was perfectly pleasant, spoke to him a few times.

Other things to note.
The room next door to ours was twice as big, with a balcony, a bath, and a TV so some of my bad points are only about the specific room we were in.

Overall
If you are after a holiday where you ski and then spend your evenings in the hotel then this is not for you. In fact if this is what you are interested in, then Livigno is not for you. This hotel is more than adequate for sleeping and relaxing for an hour or so after a hard days skiing. Once recovered the Zodiac is right in the middle of everything, but far enough away so its not effected by noise.

The above average rating I have given is for the price and the location, without this the hotel would probably get a 2/3.

I would definately consider the Zodiac again and I will definately be going back to Livigno.

Just back from a week in Livigno. Hotel Zodiac is in a great location in the heart of the resort and that's where the positives end. This should be a thriving business however the staff make absolutely no effort to provide a friendly service to customers. Not once during the week did I see the restaurant in use. The one evening where my wife and I did stop in to the bar to have a nightcap the young barman quickly stacked all chairs up on tables all around us- just in case he might get some more customers and work to do. The same staff member prevented customers from entering breakfast area if it was within 10 minutes of ending time each morning(9.30) and insulted any customers who contested this. The hotel catered for a number of large groups while we were there and they were extremely noisy every night throughout the week. There was also no sense of security about the place all room keys were easily accessible at the unmanned reception throughout the day.

So if you're looking for a friendly service or quiet holiday or some sense of security then Hotel Zodiac ain't for you. Definitely pay the extra few pounds - it will be worth it.

Stayed here early January 2008 for one week and found it to be very average. Firstly we arrived late evening and went into reception where there was no one to greet us or give us a key to our room. We had to go into the bar area and ask the barman for assistance, however he was very rude and clearly did not want to help. He said ' i don't know anything about reception , i just work in the bar, i will be with you shortly ' ! He then took 10 minutes to give us our key and that was it - no hello and very unhelpful.

We were B and B and the breakfast was okay , croissants and bread. We cannot comment on the small restaurant as we never ate there. However during the evening you would be lucky to see one person eating or drinking in there. It seemed to us that the barman just used it as a place for his friends to come and chat to him. Not very welcoming.

The rooms were cleaned every day and to a good standard with towels changed every day but the bed sheets were not changed all week. They were very basic though, no tv and the bathroom was tiny!! The rooms are in need of modernisation.

Also there is a basement where you can store your ski's and equipment, it is not locked and a gent had his own expensive snowboard stolen whilst we were there. It seems a very safe place does Livigno, however the hotel , keys and rooms were easily accessible for outsiders and needs improving. I was not happy to leave our key hanging up near to a main door every time we went out.

On the whole this a clean , basic 2 star hotel that does the job. However i know there are friendlier, nicer places with good restaurants, that may cost a little more but would say it is worth it.

On the plus side it is in a great central location.

You get what you pay for i guess.

Stayed here for a week in March, on our second visit to Livigno. The location is wonderful, very central for all skiing and socialising. However, we experienced erractic loss hot water on a pretty regular basis, which I have to say the staff did do their best to fix as quickly as possible. Rooms are a decent size, clean and reasonable enough - ours had a bath that after a long day skiing (hot water alowing) is appreciated. Breakfast was an interesting affair; where if you asked for e.g. orange jiuce or other items they would arrive, however if not they would not be offered. Also, day 1 saw an impressive selection of pastries, bread etc. that as the week went on was reduced down to bread - plus seemed to varied by table - no idea why? On the plus side, there's a great little supermarket selling wonderful cheeses, cold cuts and fresh bread. We observed others who simply bought a few items here and brought them into breakfast. Noone seemed to object and it worked fine for us. The staff are a mixture of both moods and characters. On the whole, cheerful & helpful. Would I stay again? Yes, primarily for the location.
