We are a party of 6 travelling from Australia with an age group between 35 and 60.We had heard about the Aeolian Islands but were clueless about what to expect in Lipari. We were excited when Hotel staff picked us up from the wharf and held on with white knuckles as the driver manoeuvred his vehicle through oblivious pedestrians, narrow alleys and very, very old stone buildings. We were somewhat relieved that it was only a 4 minute transfer up the hill to Hotel Bougainville.
None of us could speak more than a little Italian but had no worries communicating.(Okay...there were a few thoughtful pauses and the odd charade or two)
Our first impression was one of Wow! The accommodation buildings were set in small groups within the well maintained grounds with an inviting swimming pool and poolside "mini" bar. Large umbrellas were available for protection from the sun (there seemed to be a lot of that as it didn't get dark until late) and nothing was too much trouble for the young lady who took our lunch orders and delivered them poolside. The hotel had a roomy lobby where you can sit in or outdoor and enjoy a drink while waiting to go to dinner or just escape for a while. The restaurant served delicious, traditional cuisine. (Try the steak with green peppercorns..delicious) The sunrises were only rivalled by the sunsets. An almost full moon appeared to beam a gleaming white and golden trail onto the sea below. Now back to the hotel and its comfortable and unique rooms, each themed with colours of the Mediterranean. Tiled floors throughout and a daily service ensured that the rooms were always very clean. Window shutters and flowing sheer curtains meant you could sleep in if you wanted to. The views, the availability of the shuttle bus, the staff and comfort of this hotel makes me more than happy to recommend it to all age groups. There were family groups yet the pool area did not become a playground. The nightlife kept those of us who wished to party into the early hours happy and it was easy enough and safe to walk back to the hotel. We are 6 very happy Aussies eager to return. Thankyou Hotel Bougainville!
