Flat land! After all the hill towns it was nice to be flat. It's most fun to just set off & discover baroque gems around every corner.

...through the city centre , beautiful baroque churches at every corner, warm sun that gives such light to the "pietra leccese" , the typical stone with which all the monuments have been built. Many streets are pedestrian- only, and cats friendly.

Great architecture and enough churches to suit all tastes, mainly baroque. Pleasant to walk around the small winding streets.
Lots of choices for cafes/restaurants serving great local flavours.
I particularly liked the old Roman amphitheater.
Lecce is definitely worth a visit if in Puglia.

Wonderful sidewalks let you meander through the old quarter amidst the 2 and 3 story aged ochre buildings, old palazzos and so many churches it is hard to comprehends how and why so many in such a small space. We went in a number of them, these are baroque over the top decorated. So ...if you get home and want to sound sophisticated, architects from around the world describe these are "baroque" . Not sure you know what that is? Think puccis, and decorations over the top. When you see them you will recognize how highly decorated, to the level of ridiculous, but they do demonstrate impressive craftsmanship and incredible stone carving, The duomo is dark, located in a beautiful square but no vibrancy...they must not allow restaurants and cafes to set up their tables. At the duomo , the piazza it is bare, beautiful, but no activity... If this were Rome, Florence, anywhere else it would be full of people because the piazza is surrounded by incredible buildings which make an ideal city gathering place. But throughout the historical center- you will not go hungry. The whole area is peppered with fun cafes and restaurants, stores, book shops. you won't find the hoards of tourists typical of the north- this is a lively city, easy to walk through, not such heavy traffic , really comfortable. The buildings are worn, but charming. Also fascinating is the Roman amphitheatre and theatre right on your walk.do stop at the lovely city garden on the edge of the historical quarter; relaxing place for people watching.

Centro storico with revealed Roman amphiteater, fortress and numerous reachly and elaborately decorated baroque churches including Duomo (outside and inside) creates surprisingly monolithic image, Certainly I am not the first who says, that Centro Storico is the preciouss gem maybe somewhat forgotten. I fully reccomend a visit of this place, besides of this a wine production non standard smell and taste completes the atmosphere of this city.
