“Absolutely Beautiful!”
Reviewed February 23, 2011

Dont be mislead by the fact that Antica Villa La Viola is called a B&B - the accommodation is really self contained, fabulously spacious and stunningly beautiful apartments. The hosts - Giampaulo and Sofia - are unbelievably generous and helpful: picked me up at the railway station (even though its an easy walk), kept me well supplied with gluten free food and had lots of useful information about this glorious city. There cannot be anywhere better to stay in Lecce.

We were on a three week trip around Italy and Lecce was chosen for a night to stay on our way down to Sicily and we thoroughly enjoyed our short time there. The Villa La Viola is a delightful place to stay, we were in the room attached to the side of the main house and was a lovely place to stay, clean and comfortable and the breakfast was lovely. Lecce is a fascinating place and if we return we will definitely stay here again.

From the picture I assumed the Villa was a lovely building amid a street of lovely buildings. In reality, it's the only such gem on a not-so-nice street. Once inside the gates, however, I felt perfectly safe. The room we were given was beautiful and classy. It had its own entrance though so I never got to get the feel of the whole building. We never knew if there were other guests which was nice but also odd.

Our unit featured its own kitchenette. We were provided with everything one might need for breakfast and given the option of doing for ourselves or having a staff person come in the morning to prepare coffee etc. Everything about the place was nice and at the same time not quite what I'd expected.

A short 5 - 10 minute walk put us right inside the walls of the old town so the convenience was nice. All in all, a very good value for the price.

We got a great welcome and some very helpful advice on visiting the city and area but the room upstairs is very uncomfortable unless you are a dwarf. The ceiling is low, access to the bathroom requires bending at the waist and the shower would only be comfortable for a slender child of tender years. Internet access is only available in the garden. TV reception was poor and limited and the TV could not be heard if people were talking in the breakfast/kitchen area below. Though you cannot hear the road if you keep the bathroom door closed there is nothing substantial to prevent noise penetrating from below. The window which is small and looks over a flat roof and ugly apartment block does nothing to relieve the sense of claustrophobia caused by the low ceiling. There is no parking in the immediate vicinity of the property so you have to park your car is a nearby street. The old centre is a brisk ten minute walk through an unattractive part of Lecce. However, the rooms downstairs seemed much better than ours.

This was a fantastic place to stay, among the very best values I had on a two month-trip. It was spotlessly clean with a beautiful bathroom, good breakfast, laundry, and free internet. It’s really more of a nice apartment than a room. The B&B was attached to a large house with a very nice garden that I had access to and set back from the street in a residential area so it was very quiet. The owners, Sophia and Don Carlo, were wonderful. They were extremely helpful and very concerned that my stay was as pleasant as possible. Don Carlo even gave me a ride to Otranto when he had some business there and ordered a sandwich at a deli for my train trip the day I left.

The B&B is located slightly outside the historical center but the walk is less than ten minutes. I would definitely stay here again if I ever return to Lecce.
