So glad that we decided to stop off on a whim at this little seaside town on the way from Riccione to Monaco. The staff were all very helpful and polite. They found a place by the pool for us to park our motorcycle. The hotel itself is delightful, it is full of interesting memorabilia and the rooms are individual. We had a sea view on the third floor and it is was beautiful, spacious, clean and individual. The breakfast was continental but very nice with plenty of choice and eggs could be cooked to order. We really enjoyed our overnight stay and wished it was longer.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a sea view it is worth every penny.

The position of the hotel is simply wonderful, the structure is full of charme, the facilities are a little bit dated but the curtesy, the professionality and the kindness of the staff will let you forget about them.
Excellent also the cooking of the hotel's resturant.
We like to mention also the bathhouse of the hotel. The helpful staff will supply anything you would desire.

I last reviewed the Splendid five years ago (see below, 19 May 2008), and after some 20 years of annual visits to this sympathetic establishment, it is time for an update.

There can't be so many hotels of this size run by three (soon four) generations of the same family. And I mean "run" - these are not people who amble around in suits greeting their guests and making polite conversation with their customers: no, the Marchiano family - parents and children - all work their backsides off from early morning till late at night, every day for the six month season they open. Maybe I am biased after visiting the same place for so many years, and seeing the owners' children grow up, but it is a rare experience nowadays in this age of hotel chains and filthy lucre. But back to my review…

One of the principal reasons we are enamoured of this hotel is its position: there is no main road between it and the beach, as is often the case. This makes it ideal for families with small children, as they can be let loose to wander the bustling pedestrian street with impunity. Nor is the hotel directly on the water's edge, which some might deem a drawback, but in fact offers the delights of people-watching late into the night, which one would never have were the place right on the sea. But the Splendid has its own private beach within spitting distance (well, maybe 100 yards) away, with beautiful clean yellow sand, and comfortable chaises-longues and parasols for each guest. The cleanliness of the beach is not by chance, as we have come here out of season, and seen the beach men sifting the sand through large sieves to remove any debris before the start of the season! Once you are allotted your chaise-longue and parasol, you keep it for the duration of your stay. Every morning you will come down to the beach to find it beautifully raked over by Claudio the beach boy. Claudo is helped by his mother and wife, who mostly serve drinks, ice-creams, and increasingly, little snacks and salads. A life guard is permanently in position on the beach, so you can relax whilst your children play safely in the clear water. This year we unfortunately had an infestation of jellyfish for two or three days, but that's nobody's fault, and in any case we went to the hotel's minuscule swimming pool which no one else seems to use. When you get bored of the beach you can go up and down the pretty old pedestrian shopping street, or walk 20 minutes along the beaches to the neighbouring town of Alassio, rather more sophisticated than Laigueglia and with many more shops, but lacking some of the smaller village's charm. There are also delightful walks up on the ridges of the hills that surround Laigueglia and Alassio, with breathtaking views right down the boot of the Italian mainland.

Back to the hotel itself: although the rooms are basic, the family implement improvements every year. There has been air-conditioning in every room for some years now, and the bathrooms are gradually being refurbished, although I can't say I'm enthusiastic about the baths being replaced by showers.

The food has improved very considerably since my last review. Breakfast consists of the usual things in Italy: cereals, fruit, cold meats, croissants etc., and an innovation this year is Mr Marchiano at a little table making omelettes or scrambled eggs on demand.

Dinner has greatly improved, with a delicious buffet of starters, followed by a choice rice or pasta dishes, then a selection of five main courses, flesh, fish, fowl or vegetarian. The staff consist of young girls and grizzled men, although many of these change from year to year; but they are all are professional, efficient and very pleasant. There is a very wide range of wines from all over the country.

After dinner we go on to the patio where some play cards, some smoke, everyone has a drink, and we watch the world go by, until people start getting tired and amble up to their rooms.

And that basically describes a day in Laigueglia. I don't much like beach holidays, but four or five nights at the Splendid is something I really look forward to now. There used to be a lot of Germans and Swiss staying at the hotel, but this year there were almost exclusively Italians: this cheered me as the Italians probably won't take any nonsense, at least in their own country; and it's nice to feel almost part of the natives.

Looking (hard) for negatives, the only thing I can find is that there is no wifi in the rooms. I gather there is meant to be, but it was certainly not working when we were there, and the signal that does work is only in the reception area. The other thing many of us didn't like was that the management have seen good to hire some poor piano or synthesizer player out on the terrace while you're drinking your pre-dinner drinks, who deluges you with unwanted music.

As for the "Ligurian night" I wrote about in my last review, well, I understand it's still extant on Friday nights, but we avoided staying on a Friday night this time, somewhat to my relief. Still, who am I to judge what nearly everyone else inexplicably seems to find amusing…

Prices: I was very pleasantly surprised at the end of our stay. With breakfast and dinner included, all the drinks we had before and after dinner, wine on the table, mineral water galore, the bill came to exactly € 600 per person for five nights. Now that's good value in my books.

All in all though, we'll continue to come to the Splendid because it's, well, special. And that's something quite unusual these days.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the main (traffic) road can be noisy. Rooms overlooking the terrace can be noisy if t...

Family welcome is really touching. They do their utmost to cater for one's every need and the other staff are equally good. Breakfast is plentiful and the evening meal is simply superb. Compliments to the chef! There is plenty of choice to suit every palate and the hors d'oeuvres are a meal in themselves not to mention the rest of the meal which always provides plenty of interest. The rooms are clean, well appointed and quiet. We'd love to go back to this establishment!

Laigueglia is a small seaside resort - not very touristy which is part of the attraction. The hotel is a sympathetically restored old Italian hotel, full of features. Our room was large and very comfortable. The bathroom was nice - but a large person would not fit into the shower cubicle. Quiet location but for some renovations going on nearby, but didn't bother us. Renovations are important to restore and maintain lovely places such as this. Evenings spent wandering around the old cobbled streets and piazzas. Staff all very friendly - our breakfast waiter attended to us very attentively. Breakfast is a simple buffet with hot offer of eggs - perfectly adequate, and suited us. Good location, and parking on the street is free. Sadly we didn't get to use the private beach as it rained throughout our 2 days, but it didn't dampen our mood. The beach is a 90 second stroll from the hotel. In all I would recommend this hotel is you want something slightly off the beaten track and not too touristy.

Room Tip: As the hotel was quiet we automatically upgraded to a better room (nice touch - we didn't ask, t...

This family run cosy hotel does everything to make you feel welcome and after a few days you fell you got new friends! Location very good, just behind the beachfront appartments, and very near the private beach. Rooms were cute, a USA standard size/big of a London hotel room. It is not modern, but that is the charm.
We forgot our housekey in the room when we left. They contacted us, and mailed the keys to us in Denmark without us asking.
If you are (as we were) unable to book a room on-line as the system tells 'HOTEL IS FULLY BOOKED' try and email the hotel directly and you have a better change of getting a room. Do you want view of the sea then treat yourself to a room on 3rd floor with a view or book the junior suite with a view on 4th floor.
Another plus was the private parking a few meters from the hotel. We will go again!

I have spent there in Liguria a pretty week indeed!
This time - in September is really perfect.. Just few tourists, most of them Italians...
This Hotel has exciting "genius loci", very good Restaurant (probably locally best!), excellent services as well as immaculate cleanup--More over just a couple of steps to lovely small private beach
Hotel and Village are reachable very easy by car
Unpleasant noise from the street and from the kitchen staff

However - I could recommend!
