“Great Family-Run B&B and Restaurant!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 21, 2013

We stayed at Locando Del Mar for 3 nights in early July 2012 and found a real gem in Imperia. This is a wonderful B&B run by Mara and Lucio with help from their son and grandson in the restaurant and granddaughter in the breakfast room.
The B&B is a short taxi ride from the train station and directly opposite a popular area of the beach. This is a great spot for people watching - and observing the suntanned Italian men playing a serious game of Bocce.
The rooms are large, clean, in very good condition, and have very good air-conditioning. We had a ground floor room which allowed us to step straight out to the pool area. The pool is great - very clean and with a good number of sun lounges.
Right next to the pool is the B&B's outdoor seafood restaurant which locals told us is the best seafood restaurant in Imperia. We have no doubt about this - we had the best seafood meals (we ended up eating there every night!) of our 5 week trip through Italy and France. There are other restaurants nearby but nothing could lure us away from the fabulous meals being prepared by Lucio.
Mara and Lucio speak very little English - but what great fun we had communicating! We experienced the most amazing hospitality. When my wife was ill and needed a doctor, Mara orgainised the doctor to make a house call and then Lucio insisted on riding his Vespa into town to buy the antibiotics. We were treated like, and felt like, family. This was exactly the sort of B&B we had hoped to find during our trip.
Each morning we received a great selection of cheese, meats, freshly baked cakes and pastries in the sunny breakfast room looking out to the beach.
All of this - at the lowest price of any of the B&B's we stayed in Italy!
Thank you Mara and Lucio for your generous hospitality. We really look forward to our next trip to Imperia so we can enjoy some more time with you at Locanda Del Mar.

We have been cruising the rivers of France for years, and we always spend a few days in Paris after the cruise. This year, as our cruise was on the Canal Du Midi in the south of France, we landed in Nice and flew back home from Nice, so that we decided to stay in the region and spend a few days in Italy. Best decision in a long time.
After a long drive, from Languedoc Roussillon where we left the boat, we reached Imperia late in the day. A bit worried by our first look at the place, we were immediately swept inside, helped with our luggage, and charmed by the warm welcome of our hosts. There is a parking lot for the hotel's guests.
This place is beautiful, the room we got was a good size with a view to the sea, the double bed comfortable, the bathroom well equipped, everything modern and spotlessly clean. There is a nice garden and swimming pool, and an excellent restaurant. What more can we tired travellers ask for? But there is more.
We had dinner in the hotel's restaurant three times and it was excellent, and every time our host was very accomodating, offering to prepare any number of dishes, like this time after a long day sightseeing we asked only for some fruit in our room, while our friends really wanted some hot soup, which was not on the menu, in no time at all there was some tasty meat soup, as if that was the most natural thing to do.From our experience in any number of such places, it usually isn"t.
While dining, on our first evening, we asked the son of the house for the best way to go to the Chagall Museum in Nice. In a matter of minutes everybody in the restaurant was involved in finding for us the best directions, arguing, agreeing, disagreeing... finally we got there exactly as instructed. That was the atmosphere of the place.
It is ideally situated for short trips along the coast towards France, Antibes, Monaco, a visit to the beautifull Villa Rose in St- Jean -Cap-Ferrat or towards Italy, Sanremo, Oneglia where we found a nice shopping center to buy our gifts,Cervo. The view is superb either from the highway through all the tunnels, or from the roads along the sea.
We thank the members of the family for their hospitality, and wish them all the best.

Room Tip: higher floor has a better view, but has stairs to climb, which was not a problem as it is just one f...

Imperial is a nice little pocket of Italy that escapes the hordes of international tourists but yet enjoys a key logistical spot between Genoa and Nice.

Within Imperia, Locanda del Mar is well positioned in an obscure but lovely location at the end of the waterfront and allows one all of the advantage of bringing town with none of the hustle bustle of the city.

If you have little children, it could not be more convenient ad the beach, the playground are both across the road. The property itself has a pool, bicycles and lots of safe opportunity for children to roam.

The rooms are large and had both a king bed and a sleeper couch. We were on the ground floor with direct access to the garden. With only six units felt very private.

The place is relatively quiet but there is a train that goes right outside the window. While it did not at all bother us it is certainly noticeable.

The family that owns and runs the place are incredibly friendly and take good care of all. They run a restaurant that has good food and friendly attention to all locals and guests.

I would encourage all to consider this place if staying a few days in the region or passing through.

Upon first arriving, the exterior view of the hotel is a little disconcerting, looks a little run down, however as soon as you enter the property everything is immaculate.
The rooms were a good size, and very contemporary. The air conditioning was virtually noiseless and very efficient, the room safe was big enough to get all electronics in. Bed was comfortable, the curtains actually prevented light coming in, side sea view from the balcony. Bathroom was nicely appointed and modern. Breakfast was good.
The pool area was pretty good too, very clean, plenty of sun beds and parasols, but not all crammed in together.
The hoteliers were very nice, friendly and helpful, even with a slight language barrier.
Yes, there is a train that runs close to the hotel, having previously lived near a rail line, this didn't bother us one bit, and we didn't hear it once during the night time. Yes there is a lively bar across the road, but once in the rooms we didn't hear it.
A very pleasant stay, and great value for money. Would stay again without a doubt.

Having experienced quite a number of short stays in albergos/small hotels, it is easy to pin-point Locanda del Mar, Borgo Prino (on the western outskirts of Imperia & nr. the Ovest Autostrada junction), as quite exceptional. Largely family-run - father, mother & son are all a friendly & helpful hands-on presence - the design and facilities, within a small & compact complex, have been carefully thought-out with the comfort & convenience of its guests to the forefront. Attention to detail, both in the rooms & grounds (incl. well-maintained pool + facilities), is clearly high on the list of the host's priorities. The breakfast experience was in every way distinctly superior to others we've met with, and choosing to eat for two nights at the Locanda del Mar's own restaurant we were not disappointed by either the excellent food or restaurant environment - when eating once indoors & once out. It has to be said that Imperia itself is somewhat traffic-ridden & hectic ... but Locanda del Mar is a haven of good-taste & restfulness (with free parking too!). Don't hesitate to book in here ... no worries to be had!

Room Tip: obviously opting for the ground floor apartments will avoid stairs ... if this is a problem

If you plan to visit this part of Liguria, Locanda del Mar is definitely the place to stay. Rooms are well-equiped, clean and comfortable. The owners are really nice and helpful, giving advice where to go, what to do, etc. There's a nice outdoor pool if you don't feel like swimming in salt water for a change and the best of it: Locanda del Mar is also a Seafood restaurant. Try it, you wont be disappointed! Also there's private parking if you arrive by car.
There are two issues to mention: Locanda del Mar is located next to the railway line but even with the windows opened the noise is not really bad. If you close the windows using airconditioning you don't even notice the few trains going by. Second issue is the beach nearby which is not too good. If you are lööking for a nice sandy beach - especially if you travel with smaller kids, go to Laigueglia - we can recommend that place wich is only a 30 minutes drive.

Pros: A lovely little B and B with beautiful grounds and pool and a nice little seafood restaurant run by the owners, who were very nice and friendly. A great room, nice shower, internet in the room, balcony with an ocean view, and comfortable bed. Some parking slots. Substantial breakfast buffet and our dinner in the restaurant was quite good. Good value.

Cons: It is located right next to the main railroad track and the main highway, so the noise can be fairly high, although the room was quieter than expected. It is also on the beachfront, and there are bars, cafes and a minigolf very near. In high season, it could be quite noisy.
