Grand Hotel Bastiani

Nice location in a cozy, calm center of town. Grosseto itself is a very lovely little city. Bastiani has a very welcoming and friendly staff. The lobby sparkles, the old world charm is endearing. But the beds. The beds were the hardest, most uncomfortable beds we have ever slept on. The pillows were like rocks. The mattresses like boulders. Which is great if you are the Flintstones, but we are the Sorensens. Normal people who like normal, comfy beds. Would we stay here again? Probably so but if we did, we'd bring our own ikea pillows. Breakfast was good and the Breakfast room was very, very nice. Again everyone here was so nice we don't want to say many bad things, but as I type this, my neck is hurting. Just sayin. Oh yeah, and if you stay here on a Friday or Saturday, bring EARPLUGS. The cafe across the street has live music/painful Italian kareoke until 1am or so. Also, don't both bringing an alarm clock. The piazza church bell starts to ring at 6am, and will continue to do so every hour. If you go to Grosseto, be sure to have dinner, or at least some wine, at Dante's Wine Bar in the nearby piazza.

Flying from Chicago to Rome (with a change of planes in London) on my way to Siena, I figured I'd crash for one night in Rome. After checking out train schedules, I figured I could press on to the small town of Grosseto for my first night as I'd need to change trains there
anyway. The Hotel Bastiani was the only Hotel I could find information
about in English online that was within walking distance from the station. (A more modern Hotel is located right next to the train station itself) Happily, it turned out to be a wonderful choice - a 4-star experience that was available for 1/2 to 1/4 what a similar room would cost on Rome.

My single room was upgraded to a double (Tho' I'm not sure a traditional twin-bed single is even available) and the room was large & cozy, with a gigantic bathroom. A Shuttered window looked out on a side street up to the main piazza, but - even tho' it was All Saint's Day and the town was abuzz - once the windows were close, noise was simply not an issue. The breakfast was plentiful, with the full supply
of the usual European breakfast fare (cereals, rolls, fruit, cheese, ham, etc) but with a few extra touches (Proscuitto di Parma, Pain au Chocolat) that made it even more special. The town of Grosseto itself is small, but has it's treasures - the church and piazza, as mentioned, and the brick walls that surround the old section of town itself, and provide a nice walk. If I had more time to explore, I might have tried to see the nearby parks (or the sea!) but as I was only there one night, my main goal was to get a great night's sleep & a terrific breakfast in the morning - and the Hotel Bastiani happily satisfied my expectations on both counts. (There web site is available in English & bookings can be made directlyn thru' them)

Very pleasant surprise. Bastiani is an 'old school' hotel with marble staircases etc. It is well-situated within the old city walls and abuts the pedestrianised area. The rooms have very tall ceilings and are charismatic. Superb bathrooms. Despite the central location, it was quiet and restfull.

The main town itself, from what I saw, was nothing remarkable. However, within the city walls it is all original stone buildings and very attractive and interesting to stroll around. I was there on business (regrettably only for 1 night), but would stay there for leisure in order to better explore the old quarter. Parking is available in a nearby (cheap) public car park.

A cold breakfast buffet was included within the very reasonable room rate of €70, and was something of a feast.
