“Excellent value-for-money!”
Reviewed August 31, 2013

We stayed for four nights and really enjoyed the place. The villaggio is very close to the best beaches on Giardini Naxos and Taormina as well as the Catania-Messina highway, making our day trips so easy. The apartments were large and very clean. Air-conditioning worked perfectly and made our sleeps wonderful. Nice to have the swimming pool and so many facilities on site, including tennis and football pitches and table tennis. There were many activities during the day and the mini-club for the kids but we didn't make use of that during our stay. Highly recommended!

The apartments were fine inside, clean but basic, we had air conditioning thankfully as it was so hot, it only cost 20 Euros which we got back at the end when we returned the remote control. The beds were not changed for us whilst we were there which reminded me of camping holidays we have been to in France without the tents, you basically fend for yourselves. We didn't like the apartment block we were in because there were 4 apartments in a row and the balcony was 1 long one with no separate balcony to sit on, we were in the 2nd apartment so the people staying in the other 2 apartments further on had to walk past you to get to theirs. Unfortunately there were no other English people on site so our 10 year old boy had no-one to play with but that's not their fault. I believe not many English people go to Sicily in August but may be wrong. The pool was lovely, nice and big but at 11ish each morning they cranked up the music to an unbelieveably high level which was too much for the speakers to handle and us to be fair, but it only lasted until 12-30 when the pool and pool area virtually emptied. I couldn't get a glass of white wine at the bar which was disappointing as I generally drink cider but knew there was no way I would get that in Sicily, wine I thought would be a different story. Reception was really friendly and helpful but some of the bar staff were not (could have been a language barrier but I don't think so). There is a great supermarket about 10 mintues walk away. We wouldn't stay there again but I would say we had a lovely holiday all in all

Room Tip: Ask for apartments that have separate balconies

This was our 4th time to stay there, the accommadation is basic but lets face it who goes on holiday to sit in the apartment. We enjoyed our relaxing morning walk of about 15mins to the beach on a country road with a stop off at pierro's bar for our breakfast then on to the lovely beach at La Roche Noire where we were greeted at the beach bar each morning by franco and the boys, so uncommercialised and serene with mainly local and italian people. Sitting up at beach bar for late lunch looking out to sea was like being in paradise.
Back to apartment each evening for our shower and maybe an aperatief outside while we prepared to go into Giardini Naxos or Toarmina for an evening, little bit out from giardini naxos but bus stop about a 7min walk or reception will call a taxi for you. The first year we went we didn't hire a car and came home 5lb lighter which was wonderful. Since then because tha apt is so reasonable we hire a car which we use at night or for day trips, wonderful budget holiday for a family who can afford to hire a car as there is a swimming pool, tennis, ect on site. The Staff are very helpful most of all the Director Giorgio!! looking forward to going back next year for that little bit of paridise again. You'd be made to miss out on a holiday in this current economic climate at their prices.

I stayed here with my wife and daughter in July 07 and it is like a ex holiday camp but we got lucky and got a bungalow looking out over Etna which was great. There is a mixture of accomodation from bungalows to the holiday camp type rooms (which didnt look great but I didnt go in them). We did not spend much time in the room, which is the best thing to do. They were not dirty but nor were they up to date but they did fit the putpose. The pool area was great and very family friendly and did make up for the poor quality rooms. The entertainment was predoniately italian (night and day) as you might expect but my daughter loved the entertainers who were very good with the kids. I did get a car which helped as it is outside the resort of giadini naxos and useful for going to taormina which are both lovely. with plenty of restraunts, which are very talian with no tacky british resort features. Also went to Etna and a car is useful to get out and about if thats your thing. We are going to go back for a week this year as it is the cheapest on offer and if you want to go back to sciliy you have to cut your cloth and we know what to expect. It is not the worst in the world nor the best. The staff are reasonable and helpful but not overly friendly, but then I dont want them to be my best mate. There is a supermarket short walk (10 mins) along the road on the main road and sells every thing you need, cheap wine, cheeses, hams, breads and all the usual if you are on a budget./ When we wre there we spoke with the handful of brits who were there as it was mixed nationalities inc italians and they were of the same opinion that is was lower range but the kids had a great time around the pool and surrounding areas were great. I have said I would recommend the hotel in line with my review rather than a place you must visit for luxory.

The Villagio Alcantara in Giardani Naxos was unfortunately a disaster. It was hard to believe (actually annoying) that Dertour actually rates this place with 3 stars . It looked like a recently converted caravan park. They were tiny sparse, dorm style rooms, towels were made of bedsheet material, kitchen had 2 hotplates, 2 pots, a small fridge and nothing else. The beds were very thin, uncomfortable and old. Windows were frosted glass, so once you were inside the unit, you could not see out anywhere. The airconditioning was connected to the windows, so you were forced to keep them closed.. it was like being in a cell. My parents airconditioning didn’t even work. The hausmeister came around to look at it and said it was working fine (when it clearly was not!) and it took a lot of demanding before they finally moved them to another room. The pool was green, reception service very unfriendly and animation programme extremely loud and went late into the night.
Although stated that the beach was 800m walk away, it was at least 1 ½ km, through streets of broken buildings, rotting potato fields. And when we got there it was very shabby, dirty and not inviting at all. Most of the beach was cut off by private beach businesses, and if you wanted to pay you could use their facilities, which were not inviting at all. The water slide that appeared on the website was a private water park further along and was closed and dilapidated. The village was some distance outside of Naxos so the car was necessary to get there, unfeasible as Naxos is very difficult for parking.

You have to bear in mind when visiting Sicily that is it just developing as a resort destination and Giardini Naxos is not quite ready yet.

However this does not excuse the poor standard of accommodation which certainly is not like the brochure description. Its miles from anywhere. 30 mins walk along roads to Giardini Naxos centre, and half an hour to the beach.
Yes - the brochures says its near the beach - and it is near A beach that is not the one you see in tourist brochures. Its hard stones, shelves steeply and very choppy making it very difficult for all but the strongest swimmers.

The beach in the centre of Giardini is lovely, if you are prepared to walk for half an hour carrying all your beach stuff or wait anything from five minutes to two hours for a bus. Forget the timetable, the bus companies do.

A new supermarket opened during our stay near the complex which was great, a cash machine and food to self cater. Still a ten minute walk away and down a unnlit quiet road which is quite scary if you are walking alone at night.

The apartment was very basic but clean. The pullout bed was broken and I kid you not, when it was reported to the hotel, two guys turned up with welding equipment and proceeded to try and mend it in the middle of the room. My knowledge of some choice Italain words meant we got a new bed delivered. We befriended a couple at the complex who had actually given up trying to get out and about defeated by the language barrier, the lack of information at reception and the isolation of the complex.

Taxis cost ten euro to Giardini and around 30 euro to Taormina, and can be nmore in the early hours. Taormina is beautiful and worth the trip, and the night life can be found there. In fact you are suddenly in a holiday place with stunning view and a cosmopolitan atlosphere and cobbled streets - all the things the brochure promises with a backdrop of Mount Etna.

Visit Sicily by all means, Its stunning.

BUT - Do not stay at Alkantara unless you have hired a car, like basic accommodation, have no kids or wish to be entertained, or have any problems walking around. Move the couple of miles along the coast nearer to Taormina and you will have a lovely time. The extra costs are worth it and you will save a fortune in taxis!

And yes, the staff do talk about the guests right in front of them

Was a little disappointed when we got to this holiday village. A little far from everything. If you can afford it we would recommend staying at a hotel. We found the rooms to be very clean. There was no entertainment the first week we were here but the 2nd week there was. It was children's entertainment and slightly annoying. At least we had the first week in piece. Shops are a good 10 minutes walk and the centre is 20 mins, (really not good in that heat)..
Taormina is beautiful and will be staying in a hotel there the next time we go to Sicily. Friendly people, gorgeous food and great shoe shopping!! Can't wait to go back.. All in all Villagio alkanara isn't too bad if,as i said, you are on a budget!!!
