“Bring your own Wi Fi, kettle, iron, hairdryer, mattress and toilet paper”

Oh well... Sicily is fantastic as usual, but this place is a sheer disappointment. The owner lost an interest soon after full rental amount was paid and since then we were on our own. The check in was a disaster – we let the owner know that we are arriving early (no flexibity on the check-in time, - it is at 2pm sharp, arriving at 1.30 you have to wait exactly 30 minutes outside), and we were allowed to leave the suitcases at the property. It is difficult to find it at first, so we tried to call the owner. No reply. Sent an email asking for directions. She reverted saying she is busy. Sent another email asking for directions. She gave another number, which did not reply. Sent another email, asking for bloody directions. Finally replied with directions, saying “you can follow my earlier directions” – which were never sent. Ok, finally found a place going around and shouting “Hello, is there anyone around?” Make sure you are completely clear and elicit directions before you go. Otherwise Cafe Italia has great WiFi, toilets and a great coffee (do not miss pastry triangles with ricotta!) to allow you to survive for this couple of hours which usually takes owner to react.
To keep things on the positive side, some may enjoy period furniture, which is indeed lovely as well as some decorative features. The only reason I am giving this place 2 stars is because of a lovely cat, which was always coming to visit us and showed us true Italian hospitality, keeping us company, allowing children to cuddle and sharing our meals and meeting us at the evenings. This is the only reason why I would imagine coming back – to feed the cat and cuddle him.
Outside anti mosquito candles were carefully put in place – although we never used it, I imagine it may be a very handy feature for someone. Railway station is 10 minutes away and a day trip to Syracuse costs about 15 euro pp.
Unfortunately the positives are over now and I am struggling to see who might be best suited to enjoy this property. There are two large and unfriendly dogs which keep barking when you pass by and they roam free at night around the house. It was fun until they fouled right in the middle of the terrace and attacked my brother when going outside of the house passing the nephew's place.
The house itself is facing the main railway line. First few nights it sounds like a train is actually passing through your bedroom but after a week it does not really matter.
The house is not suitable for groups as there is no sitting room. The only gathering place is a dining room which has a seating for 6. Hot water is enough for 2.5 people so you have to make a schedule to shower. Kitchen is very basic – not that we were going to cook Gordon Ramsay style but few simple things such as kettle and dishwasher would make the place habitable.
I thought it is located right on a beach – which is kind of true but the beach is fairly rocky and for swimming you have to go elsewhere (20 minutes to the city centre).
There are couple of decent restaurants nearby and cafe and a small supermarket, which is extremely handy – when we arrived, there were no soap or toilet paper, it does not really matter as it cost pennies but it may be crucial if you arrive late.
Wi Fi is completely dysfunctional, we complained twice but it did not change things a tiny bit. 19GB mobile internet costs just 30 euro downstairs, which is enough for a week - to share with everyone in the house. TV is present but it shows nothing. Parking costs 10 euro a day and to park for free you have to walk 10 minutes (we were told upfront about this and thought it is OK – well, it is really not convenient).

“Casa mia casa mia”
Reviewed August 23, 2014 for a stay in July 2014

My place, the house i spent summer holidays in during uncounted summers.
Still the best place in the word to relax and to watch the stars, chatter with my wife and ponder from the terrace about the darkness and the sweet sound of the waves crushing on the pebbles, and the dim glow of the summer sky.

The smell of summer and salt, the sound of crickets, it's simply home.

“Beach & relax!”
Reviewed September 10, 2013 for a stay in July 2013

Amazing view from the house!
Big terrace to let the children play and we didn't even have to worry about disturbing the neighbours.
We were two families with four children in total, but eveything went smoothly. Two bathroom, each with its own shower, were perfect. Also the washing machine was very helpful. The kitchen was fully equipped and we managed to spend very little cooking almost all our meals at home using delicious, fresh and local fish, fruit and veg!
Having a real Sicilian breakfast at the café just down the road is a must!
Local shops, cafés, restaurants are 1 minute away and that is extremely convenient as you basically don't have to use the car once you get there!
The only thing I'm not crazy about is the fact that you have to cross the road to get to the beach, though it only takes 2 minutes.
