“ideal location but....”

The approach is up a peaceful one way road, traditional homes and gardens lead you to the entrance where you are greeted by very friendly staff or maybe some of the family who run the hotel. The front has a very pleasant pool and garden area where there is always sun loungers available. Beyond the pool area the Ionian sea laps up against the lava rocks from which you can have a pleasant swim or look into the small pools.
From memory there are four levels of the hotel with lift available. The lounges, Dining and Breakfast areas are beautiful and clean and a pleasant area to wallow in after a meal.
While all reviews are subjective, my few niggles which we have kept to ourselves are that the Bedroom balcony doors are very thin and ill fitting letting in all the sounds from Pool area and particularly from the adjoining balconies. There was a shower but no shower curtain is provided - a bath was preferred.
Due to our particular eating habits, the dinner was too late for us at 8.00 pm. The food is very much Sicilian with a choice of three starters or a fruit juice, two to three main courses and three or four deserts. We did not like some of the food, and skipped some courses. Several times the main course vegetables were cooked and presented in batter.
There are resteraunts nearby and all along the bay of Giardini Naxos - there are no other types of shops that we could find - you need to go to Taormina by bus to do shopping. The bus is conveniently provided by the hotel twice a day. All in all a pleasant stay but not suited entirely to our lifestyle - early dinner and a quiet room for a siesta.

  • Liked — Peaceful location
  • Disliked — Poor sound proofing - not enough food variety for non sicilians

have just returned from 4 days at this hotel.Old Fashioned Sicilian decor with lots of hand painted works around but clean at all times. Breakfast a bit dissapointing not so much the food but the drinks were always only luke warm. The view from our room was superb we kept thr doors on -to the balcony open all night and went to sleep to the sound of the waves on the rocks all night. Didnt really like giardina but had a car so were able to explore around and about. The situation of this hotel is really very good and all the staff were most pleasant and helpful and if in the area again would return again

  • Liked — The room with the view
  • Disliked — luke warm tea and coffee for breakfast

We have just returned from our honeymoon at the Arathena Rocks Hotel and can't wait to go back one day.

The hotel is beautifully decorated with local pottery, artefacts, even family portraits. The staff are all really friendly - even the restaurant staff (as earlier reviews had them down as rude).

The restaurant food must have improved because we couldn't fault any of the food. We were there for two weeks and the second week menu wasn't the same as week one. You generally have a choice of risotto or pasta with various different ingredients for starter (and they are large portions) then fish or meat for main course with vegetables cooked sicilian style and finally dessert with one sicilian delicacy a night. There was a vegetarian on the next table to us and the restaurant staff immediately created dishes to suit her diet. Breakfast is the usual Italian bread, ham, cheese, salami etc. As we were there the first two weeks of the main season, the pool was not really in action, they cleaned it out the second week we were there but it looked nice. The Sicilians only think about going in the water once the temperature hits 30C - most were still wandering around in jumpers and jackets in temperatures around 27C!

We spent a lot of time at the beach at the Lido Sayonara end (a 10 minute stroll from hotel) which is family owned - beach sunbeds, beach snackbar and restaurant. Food and drink prices are very reasonable and we had some great meals there.

We stayed in room 306 which seemed to have some of the best views from the large balcony.

Already looked into going back later this year!!

  • Liked — The uniqueness of the decor - not a large hotel formula place
  • Disliked — Pool & pool bar weren't ready at start of season

This is a real sicilian hotel. The vases and pottery on display are local to the area and available in Giardini and everything is beautifully decorated. The bedrooms are decorated in sicilian style and have plenty of storage and hangers. Our room was at the rear of the hotel but we had a balcony and a side view of the sea. The area is very peaceful and quiet since it is at the end of a no through road. The sea view rooms have a beautiful view of the bay. The air conditioning worked well and was quiet. All the staff are really friendly and helpful. We have a 6 year old and all the staff made a fuss of him we were nevr made to feel he was a nuisance - quite the reverse. No childrens club but other children were there and a third of the pool (quite a good sized area) is 1 metre deep for children. Breakfast was fine, cold cheeses meats etc croissants tea coffee and juice. Our evening meals were included in the price and were a bit repetitive. Starters various types of: soup, risotto, pasta or juice, fish or meat main meal ( we did have veal 4 times in different styles ), pudding ice cream, fruit salad and a different special each evening (tarte tatin, creme brulee). Local wine is good and reasonably priced so are the drinks at the bar. Staff were great about doing a bigger starter as a main meal for our child. Room was clean and large, plenty of room for a king size and a single. it would easily have taken another single. Bath in the bathroom plus shower over the bath. Towels changed each day and room cleaned to a very high standard. Pool area nice and clean, pleasant walk across rocks to neighbouring beach - lots of pool life to look at for kids. Etna, Taormina, Siracusa (Ortegia) all easily accessible by car. Beach in Giardini about a 10minute walk from hotel one part free the rest payable with sunloungers etc as normal in Sicily.

  • Liked — That nothing was too much trouble for the staff and everything was done with a smile
  • Disliked — The evenin meals were a bit repetitive

We found this place through one of the local guide books. The signs in Naxos are good - its at the south side of town. A little tricky to find but worth it.
The reception was friendly and helpful, willing to negotiate the price in a friendly manner and had the kitchen stay open so we could have dinner. Dinner was OK, nothing special, but after a long drive, fine. The food service was pleasant and the host competent and accomodating.
The whole style of the place is definitely not 'modern'. Enjoy the colour, the history and the texture - take a walk on the beach rocks, watch the sea pound the rocks in the morning light.

  • Liked — The old fashion style and texture.
  • Disliked — Food could use some work.

This hotel was absolutely heavenly - everything was very relaxed & the attention to detail was amazing - fresh flowers & really clean everywhere.
The food was limited but the staff were friendly & helpful & you could order any combination of the courses that suited. The service was excellent & Franco the head waiter's wine recommendations were much appreciated. After the meal it was great to have a few drinks outside & meet the other guests - bar prices as with the wine very reasonable. One night it rained & they opened the bar at the end of the lounge.
The pool & outside area are beautiful & we had a balcony overlooking the sea. Would not hesitate to go back there.

  • Liked — The whole ex[erience was perfect
  • Tips/Secrets — If you find the food limited ask for what you want - every body was really helpful
