I visited this hotel in July 2012 with my wife and 2 children. We booked the 2 week stay via Expedia and were under the assumption we had booked a large room with 2 Queen sized beds. On our arrival (late at night) we were shown to our room to find 2 beds of "French Queen" size. Beware these on the Hilton website as there is no mention of "French" Queen, merely Queen. Each bed was the size of a large single and certainly not enough room for 2 adults (or indeed 2 children!!). We raised the issue with Reception on the night of arrival after discovering the bed sizes and were told by the Night Porter that our request for a room change would be logged for the morning.
In the morning we went back to reception to find no record of our previous night's conversation. We spoke instead to a Repectionist who said that the French Queen was a standard sized bed and the mistake sadly was ours. She did show us a new rom which did have a proper Queen sized bed, as well as a single, and were told another bed could be put in there (it was a much bigger room). However the extra cost would be 30 euros extra per night. Apparently we had already been upgraded to a sea view room in our original room (there was barely any sea view to be honest!). We asked to see the Manager and later in the day he agreed to see us. He explained that the bed sizes were on the website and it was up to us to check when we booked. We made the point that something advertised as "Queen" sized should be that, especially in an American hotel company. He said the room could be upgraded for an extra 60 euros a night!! Eventually we agreed on 15 euros a night extra for the new room - admittedly a lovely big room that looked over the beautiful hotel next door plus the sea. Apparently others we spoke to had had similar bed size problems! The hotel put in an extra bed for us too.
Other than the bed fiasco, the hotel is very nice. The breakfast was good but we had it as part of our deal - some were paying €25 each per day for the breakfast so check when you book (it's not worth €25!).
The pool was nice although there were not really enough sun beds for everyone and one had to arrive early. The Lifeguard would occassionally get fed up with people complaining that there were not enough and remove towels of people not on their beds. To be honest, as long as you got to the pool after breakfast you could get a bed. If you arrived mid morning you'd probably be out of luck. Lots of people then vacated their sunbeds after lunch so more became available. Occassionally the wind would get up and the Lifeguard would charge round closing all the sun brolleys!
The beach was a short walk away but beds were chargeable on there. The beach and the sea were beautiful, very warm water.
The local town is a short walk away too, plenty of restaurants and shops.
Tip: don't bother with the beach Blue Bar or the cafe in the hotel lobby for lunch - walk 200 yards up the road (turning right as you leave the hotel) for the Euromarket supermarket - they make superb baguettes and rolls in there for a fraction of the cost of the hotel.
There is no wifi in the hotel unless you pay the extortionate 9 euro/day charge. Don't bother - there is a bar cafe over the road from the hotel where it is free.
The hotel car park is a 5 minute walk away but costs €10 per day. There are 2 attendants there at all times but it is basically a piece of scrap land. Occassionally when leaving the car park one of the attendants will giev your car a hosing down to get rid of the dust and leaves. Our wing mirror casing disappeared whilst parked there but the Scillians have a very liberal approach to driving to be honest. Whewn you arrive, tell Repection you wish to park in their car park, and they give you a chit and then add the final cost to your bill when you leave. It is not that easy to park in the local town so we generally walked into town (about 10 - 15 minute walk).
When we got home I complained to Hilton about the beds. They kept repeating the same old mantra, but in the end after about 8 emails asking for a refund they sent me a "Be My Guest" certificate for a free nights stay in a Hilton anywhere in the world.
Overall a lovely hotel, good place for a holiday, very hot when we were there, shame about the beds though!
