“Wonderful Honeymoon Hotel”
Reviewed January 9, 2009

We are 20-something Veuve Clicquot and other wonderful champagne loving and fine dining (though far from snobby) people who honeymooned in the Hotel Savoy Palace but please don't think us biased when we both state it is a wonderful hotel. It harks back to the old school days when Winston Churchill frequented it, and the decor is inkeeping with this period, as too the service. So what if it's not a modernsque affair but if you have an appreciation for the old school and you want good service and a fabulous atmosphere then this hotel still encompasses all the grandeur from the period whence it has been lovingly restored. The staff are all extremely attentive and the food is absolutely wonderful (though, admittedly, it takes a couple of nights to get acquanited with the 5 course meals but this is not a complaint!) you can savour the piano bar and terrace above, and ,yes, the apperitifs may come at a price but they are accompanied by fabulous canapes and a wonderful atmosphere that cannot be priced. Gardone Riveara is, in our opinion and ,having visited several of the villages and towns around the lake, a jewel in Lake Garda's crown and we believe Savoy Hotel Palace is the jewel of the hotel's on offer. We can't quite put it into words but if you wan't Italy around the lake then go to Gardone and savour the town that has approx 4000 inhabitants and a wonderful local atmposphere and just take day trips to the more touristy resorts around the Lake. A family run hotel with a welcoming family atmosphere, what else can we say? Sample the local sparkling wine (can't be called champagne, as it isn't of the French region's provenance, but tastes at least as good) visit Sirmione's castello di catullo (amazing roman villa, the largest in Northern Italy! not so long ago they believed the wonderful ruins to be cave's!) take a day trip to Venice (must do!) or Verona (where Romeo's Juliet's balcony is said to lie) and visit Malcesine, this place is wonderful with a great castle and chuches (that would surely be managed by the National Trust if they were in the UK) And our closing line? We met a wonderful couple (very distinguished) whilst on Honeymoon, whom were staying at the Savoy Palace Hotel and whose Son was a Producer Director for the BBC, and they were staying at the Savoy Palace ,having completed a tour of Italy's Lakes the previous year, and they loved Lake Garda - well if it's good enough for them and their Producer Director son then it's good enough for anyone!

The reviews of this hotel differ so much that I wonder that they're all about the same place.
We usually manage two or three single week stays in various places during the year and never book into less than what purports to be 4-star. We found this place was as least as good as most and better than many. We had opted for half-board and opted to pay extra for a room with a terrace on the lake, and this made all the difference. The terrace was large, with two big sunbeds, and a table and chairs. A drink outside was always pleasant, and soaking up the sun on the comfortable loungers in private during the afternoon was well worth the extra cost. It's possible that if we had had a smaller room without the terrace we could also have come to the sour conclusions as posted recently. The room itself was well up to standard. My wife always packs for a month, but it was all put away within half-an-hour of arriving. The reception was perfectly normal and pleasant. Breakfast didn't have the big display one sees in other hotels and Paradors, but it was quite adequate; Fresh fruit salad and loose fruit, prunes, figs, tinned peaches and pears, yoghurts and flakes, fresh rolls, croissants and pastries for the healthy option and otherwise scrambled eggs, bacon and sausages; all with very good coffee. Dinner was the key to this place. The restaurant is named after, and run by, a well-known chef (in Italy, anyway), and the four-course dinners were really excellent. The wine list was extensive, and the bottle prices were the lowest I've seen in a hotel for a very long time. The dinner service was a bit haphazard, with the charming friendly waiters rushing about without any apparent purpose but the food always turned up beautifully presented, which probably accounted for the slight delays - unless one requires conveyor-belt service it would be hard to find reason to complain. Evening drinks in the hotel are best avoided as ours were served by the duty waiter who didn't have a very clear idea about gin and tonic. Walking through the garden onto the promenade found several excellent bars which served gin in lethal quantities (cheaper, too). The remark in a previous review about doggy-poo round the pool seems extraordinary. The pool area and the gardens were immaculate when we were there, with guys constantly sweeping and tidying - I find the whole idea of doggy do-do unbelievable.
Other reviews mentioned the unsuitability of the place for children. At the risk of stating the blindingly obvious it's on a lake with no beaches, amusement arcades, discos or whatever - OF COURSE it's not suitable for children - How many children do you see for dinner in four-star hotels normally then?
The only thing that would prevent us going back gladly is that we've seen all the local attractions and might be at a loss for new things to do.

"This is not the Grand " is what the reception staff quoted at one of the unfortunate guests who had been redirected to the Savoy Palace after the 5 star Grand hotel had a serious outbreak of food poisoning.Sadly this was not a "Palace "either ...3 star rather than 4, Nice location near ferry terminal overlooking lake sadly not actually at lake edge. Food - poor breakfast, good dinner however no lake side dining Staff generally friendly except reception who were not pleasant/welcoming..Pool tiny , no facilities for children, tiny slice of garden major part having been given over to apartment dwellers-restricted to their use only.Horrid small apartment complex overlooking pool/outdoor dining area.Furnishings outdated and in need of change-waterdamaged rug outside restaurant should be thrown out! Nice lake view from our room .Room size small especially as we were there for 2 weeks not enough storage space. Most stay 1 week.Upgrade for lake view otherwise you will be overlooking very busy noisy road. Gardone Riviera and hotel great place for elderly folks (and those who like little dogs which are allowed in the hotel and grounds.) Not sure it would suit everyone as very quiet area with not alot to do.

Read the review from lady in IRELAND ,and packed accordingly. It would appear she stayed in a completely different Hotel . There are definetly no GALA DINNERS here and the keyboard player was around for one night only. The Reastaurant is very slow most waiters were very helpful but there was obviously problems in the kitchen, the average time for dinner was between two and three hours. This Hotel is not suitable for children there is absoloutely nothing for them to do and they are not catered for in the restaurant. Food of a reasonable standard in the evening but breakfast poor. The area around the hotel is beautiful ,but this is definetly not a four star property.

We have greatly enjoyed our second visit to the Savoy Palace in 8 months and continue to heartily recommend it.
The food is of the highest order created by a Chef who excels in the presentation and the Hotel's staff are welcoming and eager to please with efficient service.
The location in Gardone Riviera is ideal being central for visiting the towns on Lake Garda by the regular public boats.
The Hotel is not overly formal and it does provide an excellent relaxing atmosphere.
One point to consider - if your budget allows opt for a private limo transfer from Verona Airport to Gardone Riviera because this will take a little over a hour as opposed to the Coach transfer witch will take approx 2+ hours.

Stayed there for one night during driving holiday around the Italian Lakes. Fabulous hotel, might have seen better times, but you still can get some of the greand hotel feeling, for reasonable price. Room slightly chintzy but nice. Great view over lake and pool. Phantastic breakfast buffet.

After reading some of the reviews, I was a bit hesitant when we arrived at the hotel. We had booked through Expedia, which does not allow for rooms with views/balconies, but because it was our honeymoon, the hotel was nice enough to place us in a room with a pool/lake view albeit no balcony (number 206). In addition, they were nice enough to provide us with Champagne and Strawberries on arrival!

The hotel overall is fantastic. Breakfast was standard, with mostly tinned fruit and various pastries.

The pool is great and always the place to relax after a long day of visiting the othe towns around the lake. Just make sure you place your towel on one of the sun beds early, as they can get taken up quite quickly.

We were concerned about the variety of restaurants near the hotel, but there are some wonderful restaurants along the promenade, that you will never get bored. The pizza and pastas are fanatastic and a gelato to top it off.

Overall, the Savoy Hotel was great and I would definately recommend it for visits to Lake Garda.
