we have just returned from a week at the grand hotel and found it generally to be a very pleasant experience. the one thing that ruined our stay was that our room faced the VERY BUSY AND NOISY ROAD and not the tranquil and beautiful lake that we were expecting. this was not the hotel's fault but entirely the fault of EXPEDIA who mislead us on their website. the hotel were sypathetic and would have moved us if they could but they were fully booked, Expedia on the other hand had a couldnt care less attitude and i wil NEVER book with them again!!
if you like peace and quite and are over 60 you will love the grand with its traditional values and old fashioned charm, the staff were lovely and room very clean. buffet breakfast a bit hectic at peak times, but nice food and plenty of choice.

Room Tip: make sure your room faces the lake at back and not the busy and noisy main road at the front

This hotel has a level of charm and service from a bygone age. It isn't modern, but has everything you could possibly need and the staff are friendly and courteous, but also discreet. And for touring the lake, the location is perfect, with the ferry stopping at the side entrance to the hotel.
The trip started well when we checked in to find we had been upgraded to a deluxe lake view room. The room did need a little modernisation, and this is a continual programme at the hotel given its size and the large number of rooms, but we would forgive them anything for the view that we had from the room and our little balcony overlooking the pool and the lake.
Gardone itself is very small, with a few restaurants and shops, so be prepared for this if the weather breaks (as it does at the end of the season in the Italian Lakes). The larger town of Salo is only a small cab or ferry ride away, but in really bad weather, the ferry can not guarantee that it will run. When this happened to us, we were happy to sit under the gazebo of the outside section of Winnies Bar, watching the storm over the lake with one (or two) of Massimo's signature cocktails and complimentary canapes.
Despite the weather, we left completely relaxed and would have no hesitation in returning.

It's the 4th time to Gardone and the 2nd stay at the Grand Hotel and we will not be returning !
The Grand like a lot of Italian Hotels puts Weddings over consideration for it's guests. The music which was being played VERY,VERY LOUD eventually stopped at 2.00 am.It was impossible to sleep and the night porter stated that they were only having fun.
The Junior Suite (368) was very poor in terms of it's decor, furnishings and position right over the bar with live music every night.
Food is of mediocre quality and can be bettered at the Savoy Palace Hotel which is situated a short distance away.
The Grand Hotel is not grand it has known better days - we were very disappointed.

I'm struck that a few of the more recent 'terrible' reviews on here are written by people who didn't actually stay for more than a day at the hotel, it hardly seems fair to write a review based on no experience.

I have stayed at this hotel two times once with my family when I had just graduated college and now again this summer when I traveled with my husband and two young girls, and also some extended family. Little had changed in the hotel in the intervening years, and I suspect little has changed there for many years! Depending on your point of view this is either wonderful or awful!

It's a hotel that harkens back to the old days of travel in all the best ways and is rightly proud of its heritage.

The wait staff and receptionists are attentive and helpful and all the service staff members smiled and said hello. They run a very smooth operation but all the wait staff are real characters which was wonderful as our daughters were entertained every evening by their subtle antics!

Of course the hotel squeaks a little and the furniture is old. It would be a crying shame to gut out the interior and replace it with banal characterless standard hotel furniture. Part of its charm is it's old worldy-ness and if that equates to a 'dump' then obviously this is not the hotel for you.

We live in the US and we really noticed on this trip the lack of American accents at the hotel...and actually in the Garda area in general. It was a wonderful, QUIET break. The hotel is exceptionally quiet. Even around the pool it almost had a library hush about it. If that is not your thing, then this hotel is not your thing!

The food was delicious. We were in the cheap seats, on a half board basis, but there was plenty of choice and it tasted a la carte to us. We live in New York, we eat well, please don't cast judgement on our food judgement!

Other reviewers have explained the hotel's prime location. Gardone is a VERY quiet little town but it is very well placed for boat trips or bus trips to busier spots.

So as my title says do your research. If you prefer the bland anonymity of a chain hotel, save some money and stay in one. If you need to stay in the high exclusivity of a boutique hotel please spend the money and do so, but the Grand Hotel, to me, really is that, a grand old lady of a hotel with guests behaving nicely. Which was just right.

Room Tip: Lakeside. No need for a 'suite' the Lakeside rooms all have balconies

My husband and I are well travelled and stayed 3 nights at the Grand Hotel Gardone Riviera in one of their Junior Suites with a balcony overlooking the lake. At the time of booking Trip Advisor ranked it the #1 hotel on the Gardone Riviera. The suite was shabby to say the least. The drawers of the furniture creaked and were very difficult to open. The wooden parquet flooring creaked so badly when walked on, we were continually disturbing each other and we hardly slept a wink. The bathroom, which had been refurbed several years previously, had a bath and a hand held shower hose with no fixing on the wall. The nylon shower curtain was too short so that every time water hit the curtain it flooded the whole bathroom. The bath towels were poor quality, and the hand towels were simply white tea towels. All of this at a cost of €295.60 per night for bed and breakfast, plus €14 per night for car parking. The balcony was filthy and the foliage of the plants overgrown. The lift was so ancient, it was slow, dirty and in need of replacement. The carpets and furnishings had all seen better days. This hotel is ranked 4*, is in desparate need of a total refurb and, in my opinion, should be downgraded. It is trading on the elegant outside space.

Room Tip: To every traveller - avoid Junior Suite # 156 at the Grand Hotel Gardone Reviera.

I am very annoyed that a couple of recent reviews from people who really did not experience this hotel have been published and reduced the hotels rating.

One only visited the pool bar , if they had used the lemon garden restaurant for lunch they would have experienced the service and quality they feel their 'well -healed ' position affords them , this hotel is not about brash American style , after all they embrace the Beckhams , its about politeness , manners and service .

Then we have the stay for a night in the best suite , well if it was I am certain they would have remembered the name of the Churchill suite which you can see here: http://www.grandhotelgardone.it/en/w-churchill-junior-suite

I have stayed in that suite for two weeks , it is understated , it is not about how much technology or flashy wastefull products they can shove into the room to overcharge you for , its a comfortable room with superb views , with both balcony doors open it feels like you have the water on the very edge of your room , it is trying to remain as when Churchill occupied it , clearly they missed the point.

We opted for half board and the food was excellent , very few set menus will give you fillet steak / veal and so on , along with excellent fish courses and other Italian dishes , the suites were plentiful varied and very tasty, The wine list was very well chosen without a poor choice amongst the list. Breakfast was also a feast , although I would have like some refreshing sparkling wine as an option.

The road side of the hotel is not elegant , it was approached from the water so the effort and expense went into the lakeside and it is still best approached by boat not car , you can have your own mooring , but if your not 'well heeled ' enough to have your own boat then I suppose the car will have to do , you should give the place a chance and experience the charm , politeness and manners of the staff first before passing comment .

The reception is operated by a group of women and is very efficient and helpfull , its a very well run operation , its charm is that it is not trying to be modern , its a gracefull place concentrating on spending time and effort on where it should be , the customer , flashy Americans are not required or sought , fortunately the ones we met whilst there were not of that ilk .

Lastly I hope the hotel keeps the current Chef as he is to be congratulated in serving the best half board selection I have come across to date .

Room Tip: A lake view is a must the Churchill suite is good , have a third floor room in the furthest block ot...

This hotel is on the side of the lake close to the place where one boards lake tourist boats. It is a long hotel with rooms both on the side of the busy road and on the lake. Our room on the lake side was excellent, large, with a comfortable bed, a fine bathroom and excellent service.

The food was outstanding and we bought the dinner bed and breakfast package. There is another dining room where one can go for a la carte meals, but there was no need to go there since there were plenty of choices in the standard dining room. Breakfast was outstanding. Dinner was a delight.

The hotel is in the old style with a good head waiter, professional waiters and excellent chambermaids dressed in black. Despite that the atmosphere is friendly and informal. The reception staff are helpful and knowledgeable.

Room Tip: You must have a lakeside room, for the views are outstanding. It will have a small balcony which ca...
