Hotel Villa Madrina
Ranked #22 of 49 Hotels in Garda
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 8, 2011

Spent 10 very relaxing days at the VM, which is a very good, family run hotel with a quiet and comfortable atmosphere. The staff are excellent, the rooms are quite large and well furnished (and fitted with shutters for a good nights sleep). The bathrooms are very good, with lots of towels, robes and slippers. The pool is excellent, with plenty of sunbeds. Most days there were only a handful of people using the pool area before noon, although it was busier in the afternoons when people returned from trips.
The hotel has had an additional floor level built during the winter, but is never crowded or noisy. Very few children and no teenagers. Location is good, being less than 5 minutes walk to the lake and centre of Garda.
One or two minor negative comments: not every sunbed has a mattress, pillows and bed mattress a bit firm, no English channel on the TV (perhaps this should be a positive).
Garda itself is lovely, as is the lake. Lots of Italians and Germans, but quite a few English people at the hotel.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms have direct access to the lawn and pool, but not much of a view.

We have recently enjoyed our third stay at this superb, friendly, family run hotel, one of our two favourites on Lake Garda. We spent 5 days here before moving on to our other favourite for a further 5 days.
The Villa Madrina is situated in a quiet area at the northern end of Garda town, about 400 yards up a steepish hill from the lakeside. Turn right at the lake and in 200 yards you find the ferry station, going left for 300 yards will cover most of the old town and lakeside restaurants, cafes and bars.
A free, half hourly shuttle bus service operates from close to the hotel gates down to the town centre and return, from 9:30 a.m. until early evening with the usual lengthy Italian lunch break.
Adjacent to the hotel is a well maintained public playground, ideal for younger children.
The hotel presents an attractive aspect on arrival, with well maintained lawns and gardens.
Reception is efficient and friendly.
Our ground floor room was very adequate in size, comfortable and offered good fitted wardrobe space with room safe, a table and seating area, a very nice bathroom and reasonably stocked mini-bar, as well as a very comfortable bed. High standards of cleanliness were maintained at all times with regular towel and bed linen changes. There is a further individual semi-private external seating area with table and chairs for each of the rooms on the ground floor and these give easy access across the lawn to the picturesque swimming pool where there were plenty of comfortable loungers and parasols. The pool area is well maintained, the deepest area I would guess is around 4 feet.
The dining room service is efficient and friendly, with the buffet breakfasts offering just about anything you might want in the way of cereals, fruit, eggs, sausages, hams, cheeses [including smoked salmon and champagne] along with a fine range of breads, cakes preserves etc.
Whilst we had registered for B & B, we had evening dinner in the hotel on 4 of our nights, mainly because the standard of cuisine is so high but also because the price is so very reasonable. There is a very generous buffet salad and anti pasti table with great pasta and main courses to follow and a sinful dessert trolley. Bar and wine prices are pretty reasonable. The gala evening reception offered aperitifs and finger buffet prior to evening dinner along with a very talented pianist.
If you are looking for a quiet, friendly, top-class hotel, then we highly recommend the Villa Madrina, we certainly intend to return.

This was our second holiday at this wonderful hotel, we were there in May 2008 and then it wasn't a question of whether we would come back, but only of when. The hotel has such character and is run by the Tondini family, giving a homely ambience. The location would have you believe that you were miles away from civilisation, but in reality your only a couple of hundred metre's away from the main road that runs right through the resort of Garda. At the bottom of a little hill, a right turn takes you to the jetty where the lake ferries come and go all day long to various other locations on the lake. The hotel has only 21 rooms, so it's never hectic at meal times or aroud the pool area. Waiter service for the evening meal adds a little glamour and the food is always first class. The waiters (Claudio, Angelo and Doru) were extremely friendly and helpful and nothing was too much of a problem for them. The maid service was also first class, always working around your room occupancy, they also came around early evening to tidy up and re-do the bed after the(near compulsory) siesta. Clearly the best hotel in Garda, a little expensive, but you get what you pay for. Highly recommended.

Returned to Villa Madrina for 10 days in May and was again delighted with everything the hotel has to offer. Its only 5 minutes from the ferry and Garda centre yet far enough from the busy main road to be nice and quiet.
The food and service were excellent , breakfast was served from 7.30am to 11.00am and the chioce included smoked salmon and sparkling wine if you wanted.
Its not cheap but if you want quality its worth a visit.

We stayed at The Villa Madrina Hotel in Garda Town on Lake Garda in May 2009. We travelled on an Inghams package.
It's the best hotel we have ever stayed in. It's small, only 21 rooms, family run. In mid May, (early season),there were only five couples staying there, and the hotel service was impeccable. The coach drew up at the gate, and almost immediately the manageress was there, greeting us by name, plus a porter with luggage trolley. Quick registration, then we were shown to our room, where the cases were already waiting. Our first impression was how immaculate everything was. Both the building and the gardens. Perfectly maintained, clean, tidy, well-thought-out.
The hotel is in a quiet residential area, away from any through-traffic roads, but it's only four or five minutes walk from the lake promenade. Slightly uphill, but unlikely to cause any problem. (But there is a free half-hourly shuttle bus that runs around all the Garda hotels during the day). It's very peaceful, just the sound of birdsong. (We met people staying in lake-side hotels who were distressed: unable to sleep because of the late-night music and chatter from the promenade cafes).
We had requested an “Oleander” room, first floor with balcony. There are first-floor “Hibiscus” rooms which have large open terraces with sunbeds, but the balconies are more private. The ground-floor rooms open onto the gardens and pool area.. but you probably don't get such a good view. All rooms look towards the lake, with the Monte Garda mountain to the South.
The room was surprisingly big, and well-equipped. The double-bed was actually two singles with one headboard. We'd have preferred a British style double. Table, chairs, desk/dressing-table. Mini-bar fridge. Wardrobe, big enough for our suitcases. TV, (satellite, but only two English-language channels, BBC and CNN). Plenty of lights and switches. Bedside tables. Wine glasses etc. The bathroom was excellent.. beautifully tiled. WC, bidet, washbasin, whirlpool bath, and shower (with hose, not a fixed rose). Dressing gowns, slippers, towels, soaps etc. Spotlessly clean.
The balcony had a table and two chairs. Plus a balcony box full of red geraniums, and a trough planted with roses to one side. The near view was of the lawn, rose-garden, and the blue pool-area.
To each side trees and gardens, the tall Italian conifers. In front, the roofs of Garda with the lake behind. Very pleasant. In the evening, the setting sun lit up the forest and rock faces of Monte Garda.
Downstairs is the reception area, with newspapers to borrow. The British Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph included. The restaurant. The terrace for sitting, snacks or drinks. The lower-ground floor has an Internet-enabled PC, a large TV room, and a beauty-salon/spa, neither of which we used.
The gardens are lovely, really well cared for. Roses, lemon trees, palms, bananas.. There's even a mini-golf course. A spotlessly clean pool with lots of sunbeds.
Breakfast is 7.30 to 11.00. It's superb. I counted about sixty different items put out each morning. Starting with the sparkling wine! Freshly prepared fruits, papaya, kiwi, peaches.. Hams and salamis, cheeses. (And we got a different selection each day). Three types of omelette, Bacon. Different breads. And a toaster. Cereals, fruit juices, jams, and a selection of German style items.
Lunches are served 12.30 to 2.00.
Dinner is 7.00 to 9.00. It's a four/five course Italian meal. Anti-pasti, Primo(pasta/soup), Contorno(salad/vegetables), Secondo(meat/fish), Dessert. Anti-pasti is help-yourself, usually about five or six small items, which varied daily. Then about another twenty-five other items, salad, vegetables, cheeses The Primo and Secondo courses had four menu choices each. Every day was different. The menus were in Italian, German, and English, but the translations could be confusing, (e.g. what was Pangasiofish-Roll? Cannelloni Nizzarda style? ). Impeccable service by the waiters.
The sweet-trolley usually had about four choices.
Thursday night is Mr. Tondini's reception. Starting with wine and canapés on the terrace. Gentle piano music all evening, Gershwin-type music, played by Grandfather(?).
While you are having dinner, your room is serviced.. beds turned down, curtains drawn, waste-bins emptied again, and on the table a tea-light candle is lit. A card and present appeared on my birthday.
It's a civilised hotel. It's not one for boozing young parties. And not ideal for young children, (and the pool doesn't have a very shallow area).

We stayed at the Villa Madrina for 6 nights and wished it could have been much longer. The hotel is in a beautiful and peaceful setting, yet within an easy 5 minute stroll of the centre of Garda. The accomodation is everything that you would expect of a high quality 4 star hotel and exceptionally clean. The service we received was particularly efficient and attentive, and delivered by friendly, helpful staff. We will definitely return and would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone staying in Garda.
