“Basic rooms, perfect location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 23, 2012

Good points:

- Perfect location right on the lake with restuarants and shops a few mins walk and beach 5 mins away
- Communal areas in hotel lovely, including restaurant and terrace
- Breakfast fantastic with wide variety of food and drink to suit everyone
- Air conditioning in room fantastic (not sure why other reviews state it is only on at certain times of the day, as we were able to keep ours on all day/night). If you go make sure it is set to +3.
- All staff very helpful and friendly
- Hotel's a la carte restaurant (not included in price) is lovely, has a huge choice of food and people staying in the hotel get a 10% discount

Negative points:

- Room and bathroom basic
- Rooms have no view (although hotel terrace made up for it)

The perfect hotel choice for someone who literally wants bed and breakfast, as location is perfect!

Just back from a week in The Astoria. Plus points are:

Excellent location
Very clean
Friendly reception staff
Nice sun terrace
Quirky feel to the place

Negative points are:

Woeful air conditioning in the rooms. The fact that it only runs at certain times of the day, coupled with the fact that it barely dealt with the sweltering heat even when it was on, made for some very uncomfortable time in the room. With temperatures pushing 37 degrees last week, sleeping was nigh on impossible and getting ready to go out at night was a sweat-fest

Breakfast was the same stuff every day, with absolutely no change during the entire week. Tasty enough for the first day or so but we were dying for something different by the end of the week.

We were refused a refund of the deposit we had paid for the safety deposit box. We paid the deposit on the 1st day and were given the key to the room safe. However when we returned the key, no one had made a note of our deposit and the staff were unable to accept we had paid it. How we would have the key without paying the deposit (plus the €1 per day non refundable payment), is a mystery. It was only €10 we lost out on but was a disappointing end to the week. As our airport transfer was waiting for us we didn't have time to argue.

The "eaves" rooms are cramped and the slanted ceilings meant a few bashed heads as we tried to negotiate around the room.

However, if you're looking for very basic accommodation in a great location to explore the surrounding area, then the hotel would suit your needs, however don't pay over the odds for a package deal. Wait until it drops into late deal territory.

Room Tip: Avoid the "eaves" rooms if at all possible.

A group of 6 of us (mid 50s to mid 60s) stayed here from 4/8/12 to 18/8/12 in three rooms, and we would recommend the hotel highly. We were on a b&b basis, and the breakfast was very good with a continental style boosted with bacon and scrambled/ boiled eggs, and a good variety of drinks. You can also eat at the hotel restaurent in the evening, and there is a varied menu which was very good and reasonably priced.
On arrival we were met by a very helpful receptionist, who explained everything well , and we were in our rooms unpacking at 1pm, and out for a snack by 2pm. The reception area is decorated with all manners of frogs (pictures, fluffy toys and ceramics etc) that we thought was brilliant and funny and children orientated, but if someone had a frog phobia??
The room was twin bedded with ensuite and aircon, it was very clean, bright and airy, and had everything we required, and the ensuite had a hairdryer over the vanity unit as well as the usual sanitryware. This good level of cleanliness continued throughout our stay, with towels changed daily and bedsheets every 3 days, and the cleaners/maids were very friendly and helpful.
The hotel is ideally situated on the prominade beside the town hall and has a sun terrace with loungers and parasols overlooking both. We found this excellent as we were able to watch the festivities that went on over our stay (concerts, feasts, talent contests, and a local parade after a boat race). We went on 4 trips which left the bus station which is only 250mts away on the main lakeshore road, so very handy. The pier for the boats is about 300mts away, again very handy.
On the main entrance side there is a square and the was dancing 2/3 times over the fortnight as well as a youth orchestra concert, art exhibitions and even two lads playing didgerydoos (the Australian wooden pipe instrument). Havind said all that everything was finished by 11.45, and you did not head much noise at all. When we got up the next morning outside had been cleaned council workers with leafblowers and then sweeping machines. This starts around 7am but we were all up anyway.
We left our windows open the whole time with the shutters left ajar, which let in plenty of fresh air and adequate light. We had spoken to a waiter who studies at Cambridge and he told us that crime af any sort was nil, so that made up our minds about the windows.
The hotel allowed us to have a great holiday, enjoying the scenery, food, and the locals, and making friends with other holiday makers. We all would have no hesitations about recommending the Astoria Hotel for a stay.

Stayed here August 2012. Rooms are adequate and the beds are comfortable. Breakfast was very good. Location of the hotel is superb, right in the centre, close to the promenade and lake and lots of entertainment. All of the hotel staff were friendly and made you feel welcome.

This hotel is 3* and the rooms are very basic, they are clean but furniture and beds cheap and basic. Rooms small but okay, bathroom, especially shower needs replacing. Breakfast very good, bacon and scrambled eggs, boiled eggs fresh bread and rolls, ham and cheese, 2 yoghurts 2 fresh juices, variety of preserves and butter etc. Hotel is also frog museum and this is done pretty well if you like that kind of thing. Staff friendly and helpful. Restaurant very popular but you do get 10% off for being a guest food very good, Can be very busy and sometimes noisy in square, but always something to watch and see. Crystal welcome meeting held here, excellently situated for ferry and bus station, about 10 minutes from Gardaland and Movieland and water park. 40 minute walk to Bardolino, flat all the way very pleasant stroll lots of places to stop for a drink and places to sunbathe.

Stayed at the Astoria early July, Hotel was just as i had seen on the trip advisor pics you can also see a more detailed video review of the hotel on it's web site http://www.garda-tourist.com/hotelastoria/en/.Typical continental breakfast with bacon & scrambled eggs thrown in, the resaurant of the hotel was very popular albeit a little more expensive than other restaurants in the resort, the location was perfect for the resort right on the lake.My only gripe with the hotel & you may need to bear this in mind when you book is the hotels' Air conditioning,it is on a timed basis, nothing wrong with that but the actual times it comes on, between 1:00pm - 6:00pm, which i found was a total waste of time, i mean how many residents are in their rooms between these times, you are on vacation after all,so when a typical hoilday maker is getting ready for the evening stroll. drink etc between, say 5:00pm - 7:30 the air con goes off, you are sweating cobs trying to get ready, especially my wife using the hair dryer, the other times it comes on is between 10pm - 04am, so every morning about 5am when the room starts to warm up you are again in a bath of sweat tossing and turning in the heat. Surely a card system that a lot of hotels use acts as your key and electric supply so you only use it when you are actually in the room would i think be a lot more practical, didn't have a good nights sleep because of this timed system used at the Astoria. Anyway, the resort itself is fantastic, plenty of bars, resaurants, cafe bars to choose from and not once were we haggled by waiters to eat at their place as it was a very busy resort with everywhere quite full.
Used the ferry and local bus to get about, i would recommend a visit to Bardalino, Lazise Malchesine, and Simeone, also Verona was very nice also, local bus was only 8 Euro return, used the cable car at Malchesine, well worth a visit. This was my first time to Italy and would recommend this resort 100%.

Room Tip: Our room 104 was overlooking a small square o.k. except for the air con
