“A Great Family Holiday”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 1, 2009

Just returned from a holiday at Poiano and to be honest I think it is a fabulous place to take your kids for a hot week or two in the sun.
Yes the public transport is poor and yes a hire car may be a good idea for a bit of your holiday if not all. However there is so much to do on site then you won't need one all of the time.
The only complaints about the food I would agree with are the comments about desserts. Other than that it was different every day apart from the Salad.
Our rooms were huge, we had one for our daughter and a separate large one for us, technically it was a suite.
Aircon was great room maintained 22 degrees as required constantly.
Staff were superb, spoke 3 languages (at least), cleaners - actually cleaned. The waiting staff were superb, very friendly and attentive.
We are already looking at booking for September again.
The pool was great, as were the tennis courts and children's play area.
Brush up on your German as it is probably the most useful language for Garda.
I would recommend this Hotel to anyone.

I visited Lake Garda for the first time, and as expected it was beautiful. However the Poiano was a disapointment. I expected 4 * but it was quite basic, broken tiles in the bathroom, grubby carpet and drab fabrics.
We were half board, and the breakfast was reasonable but was the same every day, and actually we felt the hotel catered more for german tourists, and we were made to feel second class when there were large groups of them. The evening meals were not impressive, and if you did not arrive early for dinner, most of the best desserts were gone and not replaced.
The hotel was in lovely grounds, but to get to Garda and the boats you had a long hilly walk, and as it was very hot it was a real pain.
The courtesy free local bus was every half an hour, but as the locals used it we often were not allowed on, and I might add the driver seemed to take delight in this!
I will definately return to Lake Garda, but would not stay at the Poiano.

Just got back from 2 weeks at Poiano C apartment, 2 children 12 & 16, both had a great time. Very clean, surprised only hobs, no oven or micowave or toaster, which makes self catering quite limited. Nearest proper supermarket (ie not shop in town) about 5 min drive. Large shopping centre 10 mins in Affi.Hired a car for the whole time, good move. Free bus, ends at 7pm, provided by town and it serves the whole town so safety not a priority. Met couple who hadn't hired a car and expected things to be much more acceissible. Although we heard about people walking to town, they looked pretty tired to me, and it was hot during the day, 29-33c. Entertainment at apartments good, pool excellent plenty of sunbeds, even in height of summer. Didn't have air con, but wasn't a problem as it cooled down just enough at night. Some apartments did ahave air con, check first. Even if air con supplied, heard that remote removed unless supplement provided. Staff very friendly apart from shop which was very ill equipped for self catering. Lots of mainland europeans who drive to Poiano, most were on the third or fourth visit. Lovely region, would go again,

We have just returned from a week long stay at the Hotel Poiano.
We stayed in the hotel itself and were allocated a double room with balcony. The room was clean and air conditioned and the bed and facilites within were good. Towels changed every day and (in response to previous reviews) a supply of loo paper!
The Poiano is a large complex and it's olympic size pool is a major attraction. The pool is cleaned daily and it's size means that most of the time there is more than sufficient room for everyone. Most of the guests appeared to be German or Dutch families with a few Brits and other nationalities.
We booked half board and the breakfast was plentiful and with sufficient variety. The dinner menu is somewhat repetitive and it is worth going elsewhere for one or two meals. However, the food provided was of good quality.
The walk to and from Garda is not too much trouble for anyone who is reasonably mobile. It is worth taking the shuttle bus first and if you do walk following the route the bus takes down into the village as the hill is much less steep. Allow 30 minutes for a leisurely stroll. The bus itself did not stick to it's published timetable and can be as much as 30 minutes late. It was often full of locals and some hotel guests were turned away.
Outside the complex there is a nice pizzeria where you can also pop in for a beer in the midday heat.
We restricted our excursions to the lake and Malcesine is probably a must visit. There is also a cable car from there to the top of Monte Baldo. Its worth the fare but the queues can be over an hour at peak times which is frustrating.
Garda itself has several nice restaurants by the little port and the fish and shellfish menu is extensive and very appetising. There are a few African stree hawkers about who can pester but do leave you alone if your firm.
Overall it was a good stay.
Poiano is ideal for families with young children as the pool and leisure facilites will keep everyone happy. It is also ideal for couples and one plus is the great view of the lake over dinner.

Good Hotel In Costermano, Lake Garda. Has an Olympic sized Swimming pool and a number of good tennis courts ( you need your own tennis gear ) My family and I stayed in a Self-Catering "B" block Apartment which was a little spartan but had all the amenities you would need in a 7 day holiday. A good walk down a hill to walk to Garda although a free shuttle service stops just outside of the Hotel Grounds and is driven by friendly bus driver, dosen't speak much english but if you try italian and fill the tip dish you will be fine. We used the hotel restaurant once which served a mediocre range of food and did not cater for kids unless they enjoyed spaghetti. There was a good restaurant named "La Capanina" just outside the hotel barrier, and further up Via Poiano there is also "Stafolet" another good restaurant. Staff are all very friendly. Restaurant is car-friendly and the apartments cater well for groups of 6 or more. 200 euro deposit taken as you check in to apartments (not sure about rooms) and you will be charged 200 euros for even the slightest breakage or loss, Cleaners unfriendly and have a bad knowledge of english or german. overall a very decent hotel.

I have just returned from a week at the Poiano in Lake Garda and thought that I would give those of you that are yet to experience this hotel/residence a few tips...

The hotel and apartments are great - we stayed in an apartment - it was very clean and had a full sized fridge, hob, shower (no bath), two singles and a sofa bed, it also came with amazing views of the lake, Garda itself and the mountains around the lake from our large balcony. The staff in the hotel were very helpful and friendly although some don't speak much English they go out of their way to help.

If you are going to Poiano there are one or two things you should be prepared for....

1. The Hills - the resort itself is set amongst hills, the walk from the bottom of hill up to the main hotel is nearly vertical, as is the walk up to the apartment blocks - the upside of this is that there is lots of greenery and open spaces at the resort, which gives it a feeling of openness and fab views that you don't get in the town itself.

2. Garda to Poiano - the walk from Garda to Poiano takes around 40 mins (for fairly fit people) - again its straight up or down a hill but there are a number of hotels/bars on the way up that you could stop at for a break.

3. The Bus - there is a free shuttle bus (run by the locals not the hotel) that goes from near the entrance of Poiano into Garda, however, the last bus into Garda and/or back is around 7.15pm - we found the best thing to do was to get the last bus in and then walk back later when it was cooler, the walk was also made more bearable by one or two glasses of wine!!!

4. The Restaurants - there are a few good restaurants in the area immediate to Poiano, Stafolet has a particularly good salad bar and choice of pasta/pizza. Also the Campanina - right outside the hotel grounds - has fab pizzas!

5. Wine - we discovered that most restaurants do a great house wine that can be bought in various sizes of carafes, this works out cheaper than buying bottles and as something of a wine 'buff', well drinker, I didn't come across any wines that weren't nice.

Venice - if you decide to go to Venice (well worth a visit) try the train, it was around half the price of the organised tour and you get to find your own way around, which I personally prefer to being herded. Take the bus from Garda Station to Peschiera del Garda station, then buy your ticket at the station from the machine (which translates into English) ensure you buy a ticket to Venice San Lucia this is the station that is in Venice itself rather than on the outskirts.

Garda is a beautiful place to base yourself for a holiday at the Lake - I really was amazed by the place and loved it, even though it rained (alot) for the first half of our holiday, I would go back again, no question about it.

My wife, myself and our 1 year old stayed at Poiano hotel (not apartments) this September (2007). The location is great. A 5 minutes drive to the lake and Garda promenade. It is easily reached from the highway. The hotel holds a swimming pool and tennis courts (which we didn't use, but were packed with people – so this is a good sign).
The breakfast was wonderful, a large collection of bread, eggs, beverages and cereals.
We came in the end of the season, so the weather was hot by day and cold at night (for us anyway), so the staff was very nice and helpful in providing us with extra heating.
We stayed at room 176 (superior) and had a beautiful view of the city and lake.
In general, this is a wonderful hotel, and highly recommended.
