“Traditional hotel in a fabulous location”
Reviewed June 23, 2012

Have just returned from a week in the Piccolo Hotel in Garda. This was our fourth visit to Garda but first to the Piccolo. It is a small (10 rooms) family run hotel right on the lakeside in a really beautiful location. The weather was unusually hot (38 degrees at 6pm) and so the lack of air con was more of a problem than it might have been - the rooms only have ceiling fans which struggled to cope in the extreme heat but would probably be adequate in normal circumstances. Eating outside on the lakeside was lovely and much nicer than the more formal dining arrangements of some of the other hotels. The hotel is spotlessly clean and the rooms comfortable. The only fault was that our room was at the back and overlooked a very, small bar which seemed to be the only one in Garda that remained open until about 4am and as a result it was quite noisy. The breakfasts were buffet style, continental and lovely with a wide choice of cold meats, cheeses, cereal, fruit, breads, frittata, boiled eggs, yoghourts and conserves. Dinner was a set 3 course menu with a choice of 3 starters, 2 mains and 3 desserts. We enjoyed the week very much and I would go back tomorrow given the chance. (One word of warning - make sure you have your front door key if you are going to be back after about 11.15pm as we found ourselves locked out and facing a night on a park bench until sheer luck saw some of our fellow guests returning late from a trip to Venice and they let us in!!)

Room Tip: We had a family room (last room available when we booked) which gave us a lot of extra space.

A lovely, traditional, family run Italian Hotel, in a great location. Our two children (aged 8 and 4 at the time) were made to feel very welcome, despite the language differences. We stayed on a half board basis and whilst the children did eat off the limited, set menu the staff had offered to cook alternative things for them if required. It was very clean and a great base for our one week stay. The only thing that would have improved things further would have been an air conditioning system as the fan was extremely noisy at full speed. However our visit did coincide with an unusually hot period. The children have asked when we can go again, and we would also love to return at some point.

Room Tip: They have a great family ensuite room, where there was a wall seperating the childrens twins from ou...

Guests return here year after year and it is easy to understand why. We picked it because of its value in the thomson range and it offered half board. Very friendly, family run hotel, sometimes a bit like fawlty towers which made it great fun. Very clean, good food , although it repeated on the second week so if you are going to eat out then pick this time. Great location , close to the bus station and the ferry point. Also close to the Hotel victoria, which is great for coctails, beware of the long island tea, they make you so drunk. Overall a great hotel, great location, friendly people in a beautifil place. If we return I would not hesitate to stay here again.

Room Tip: The more pleasant you are with the staff, the more pleasant they are with you. The mother made us a...

I was looking to return to Garda after an enjoyable holiday in 2009 and was surprised to discover that this hotel wasn't included in the Trip Advisor listings. Our stay here isn't recent, and things might have changed, but my instincts are to return because the stay was so enjoyable last time.

Hotel Piccolo is in the central square of the old town and is first seen as a large pavement restaurant-cafe that dominates one side of the square with its matching furniture, table linen, and parasols. Behind it all is a quaint traditional Italian taverna with about four or five bedrooms and a cosy alpine-syled bar. Needless to say, the food is fantastic, as you might expect from a restaurant that seems to feed about half the town, although to keep down costs the residents have a limited menu that changes daily with a selection of just three or four main courses from the encyclopaedic a la carte menu.

The hotel is family owned and there was fun to be had in working out the relationships between the various people who worked in the bar, the kitchens, and waited on the tables. In the middle of it all presided the padrone and his wife who commanded the various sons and daughters with clicks of his fingers like some latter day Mafia boss. As often is the case in Italy, this was drinking and dining as theatre - with you as part of the cast as well as part of the audience.

The accommodation was basic but very clean. Not all the rooms had en-suite facilities. There was no air-con, but huge ceiling fans in each bedroom. With it having a town square setting it was convenient for all the town's facilities, but the square could be a bit noisy at the weekend - not the best place to stay if you want an early-night's sleep.

Garda is a perfect base from which to tour the area. Trips to other towns around the lake by the comprehensive ferry service, including some marvellous paddle steamers about 100 years old, are worth taking. Day trips to Venice, or to Verona for the open air opera, are easy to arrange. When we return our first choice of accommodation will be Hotel Piccolo.
