The Palazzo dei Diamanti (Diamond Palace) has an extensive collection of beautiful paintings. I'd recommend visiting AFTER touring the Castello Estense, (Este Castle) as some of the artwork referenced in the castle history is actually hanging in the Palazzo dei Diamanti. The museum offers audio tours, just give your identification to the attendant as collateral. I found the museum to be a wonderful representation of the art of Ferrara, but as you will learn from the Castello Estense tour, many of the fine art that used to be in the area is now scattered across the globe, some lost forever. The palace itself is absolutely amazing, and I recommend viewing it at night, as well. It is a stunning piece of architecture. The museum will host a collection from such masters as Modigliani, Picasso, and Dali from September 11, 2011 through January 8, 2012.
