Zafferano was originally intended for a dinner visit but after a busy morning touring Ferrara, I decided to visit for lunch. Unfortunately, the atmosphere was rather 'low energy' as there was only one other table that was occupied during my visit while a lack of background music and limited natural lighting served to let the overall experience down. Thankfully, the two seafood dishes that I ordered proved to upstage their surroundings. If you are looking for fresh, simply-presented seafood, Zafferano is an excellent choice.

This April I visited Zafferano for the fourth time. My work has bought me to the lovely city of Ferrara often in recent years and each time I've made this restaurant a must. The restaurant is set in a quiet pictureque part of town, only about 7-8 minutes walk from the centre of the city. The decor is warm and inviting and the ambience romantic. Each time I've been the menu is very different, but always full of surprizing combinations that really melt in the mouth. Great service - attentive and charming but not over fussy. It's not cheap, but it's great value for the exquisite food you get.

As the wine list wasn't as extensive as in other restaurants, we were struggling to find a decent bottle at a reasonable price. However, the chef's wife was very accomodating. She offered various options, including consuming just half of a full bottle from the list (because they didn't have many half bottles), or charging a small fee if we brought our own wine. We appreciate the courtesy given that that is not the normal practice at most Italian restaurants. The piping-hot bread, we were told, was freshly baked and was very good, while the "primi" of fish wrapped in black raviolli was unique and nicely done. However, the duck noodles seemed a bit like the chinese fried noodles, while the fish (secondi) was a bit fishy if not for the mustard sauce. The dining room isn't very big and filled up quite quickly. Wise to make a reservation.

I went here two years ago, but it wasn't on Tripadvisor then. However, it was one of the best meals I have had in Italy. We had the tasting menu which was superb, and good value. The food was ambitious and of the highest quality: the chef had worked at the Gavroche before setting up on his own. In addition, it was open in August, which was surprising and welcome. It was very quiet, so limited atmosphere, but that was not their fault.
